Canes Sign Top Pick Addison

The Lethbridge Hurricanes Hockey Club have signed prospect Calen Addison to a Western Hockey League’s Standard Player Agreement.

Addison, 15, was selected second overall in the 2015 WHL Bantam Draft last Thursday. The product of Brandon, Manitoba, led his league in scoring amassing 76 points (45g-31a) in just 31 games with the Brandon Wheat Kings Bantam AAA in the Winnipeg Bantam AAA Hockey League.

Hurricanes General Manager, Peter Anholt, says he’s happy to get this done so quickly, “I think it sends a real important message throughout our Community and the hockey community. Calen is very excited about being a part of the Lethbridge Hurricanes and we are very excited.”

“It’s just one of the dominos that we continue to work to do away with and now we can look forward to other ones,” added Anholt.

Anholt says he’s very excited about the type of player that Addison is, “he’s a real special player. He’s not very big, but he plays the game big and he skates so, so well. His first three strides are powerful. He’s an elite player and we believe he’s going to have a really good career, not only with us but going forward at whatever level that might be.

Addison, who tips the scales at 5’9” and 160-pounds, says he’s excited to be in the fold, “it was a huge honour to be picked by the Hurricanes [second overall] and I just want to bring a big game to the Hurricanes and hopefully have a big turn around.”

“It was an easy decision for us [to sign]. I want to be a part of that turn around that they’re trying to make and it’s just an honour to be a part of it and to be the guy they took and to join the organization,” added Addison. “I’m just excited to get things going and meet all the guys, staff, and everyone in the City of Lethbridge.”

  1. this is the thing I love about anholt, he is a realist .he does his his homework and then drafts the players he know that will come here..BR seems to draft player on their talent level but doesn't have a clue whether they will sign..thats the diff between the two men..what good is it signing second overall if 30th would have come and second would not..good on calen, this kid seems to be a stand up kid like skinner...

  2. Don't count Bellerive out yet. To be honest I would have struggled to have my kid committ to the franchise in the state it was. With the stability Anholt brings, a new coach coming in, and a spot in the lineup might be enough to bring him around. Camp will be very important.

    1. What may be more important than camp is the upcoming vote for the shareholders on whether to sell the franchise to private ownership or not.
