Red Deer Rebels Double Hurricanes 4-2

Wyatt Johnson scored twice as the Red Deer Rebels beat the Lethbridge Hurricanes 4-2 Saturday night at the ENMAX Centre.

The Rebels actually jumped out to a 3-0 lead heading into the third period in this game. It wasn't until the 12:04 mark of the final frame that the Canes managed to break the Rebels shutout bid and ignite the Teddy Bear & Toque Toss. The hockey club collected 2477 stuffed animal Saturday night and 461 toques, all of which will be donated to local southern Alberta charities.

The Rebels opened the scoring with a pair of power play goals in the first period. Wyatt Johnson scored his first of two on the night at 6:38 to make it 1-0 Rebels. Then late in the period, Evan Polei scored to make it 2-0 Red Deer after 20 minutes of play. The Canes were out shot 19-8.

In the second, Red Deer added to its lead. Wyatt Johnson scored his second goal of the game to put the visitors ahead 3-0. The Rebels held a 29-14 edge in shots through the first two periods.

That three goal lead held up until midway through the third period when Taylor Cooper scored for the Hurricanes at 12:04. That cut the lead to 3-1 and triggered the flying of hundreds of stuffed animals and toques onto the ice. Once things were all cleaned up, the Hurricanes scored again late in the period. Zane Jones found the twine, shorthanded to make it a 3-2 lead for Red Deer with just over two minutes left. Red Deer though would ice the game when Raymond's Brooks Maxwell scored into an empty net to give the Rebels a 4-2 victory.

Red Deer out shot Lethbridge 37-19 in this game. The Rebels went 2/5 on the power play and Lethbridge 0/2. The loss drops the Canes overall record to 6-19-3-1 on the season, still last place in the WHL. The club has just one victory in its last 14 games. Things don't get any easier this coming week either. The Hurricanes host the WHL's top team Wednesday (Dec. 10) when the Kelowna Rockets come to town. The Rockets have only 7 losses in 31 games this season.

Thanks,
Pat

  1. I was unable to be at the Enmax last night so I watched the game on line . The Canes are trying hard to improve their game . The broadcast booth needs to improve a lot. This was the first time I watched on line this season . There was no play by play broadcast for much of the first period . Were they late getting there or were they unable to put down there beer? That is a bad reflection on the whole Canes' organization .Please figure it out.

    1. I can't speak for the Sat game but on Fri in SC... the station's (internet I assume) connection was so bad we could only hear 20% of the words Dustin was saying... very annoying after just a couple minutes, I turned it on/off several times during the game and it was the same poor technical quality... Dustin is doing a great job but Rogers must have spent all their resources on the NHL and not their small town radio stations...

    1. Longtime fan ...It might be news to you but a goal tender is part of a team as is every other player . That is where the word TEAM comes from . The Canes have in my opinion two good tenders . Every team needs "decent goaltending " , we are fortunate to have two good ones .

    2. My point was the goaltending is masking to an extent how bad this team actually is. Goaltending is the sole reason games are close. They get outshot by almost a 2-1 margin every game. Only way they win is if one of the two steals a game.

  3. The WHL is one of the most prestigious leagues in the world known for it's development of players and should these young men have the honor and ability to make the cut, they have the chance to elevate their game to the next level. This organization is making a mockery out of that intent. The lack of professionalism of the coaching staff and GM is embarrassing, we are the joke of the league. This is not what these young men signed up for, they are dedicated and hard working and obviously given another environment seem to thrive. Look at those players that did ask for a trade whether selfish or not, their new coaches are able to guide them to the best of their ability and they are thriving! Isn't that the sign of a good coach? Someone who is able to extrapolate the talent out of each and every player, after all,l these players have made it this far, doubt they did it on lack of talent! Do we not all believe the morale of this team is in the gutter when you have your GM trading away your leading scorer? OR…your team is arriving late to a league game just to name a few recent events! Who isn't tired of the opposing announcer and our own announcer reporting that our power play is the worst in the league? Here's an idea - how about you change it!!! When your organization is striving for mediocre, it is tough to rise above it! These young men work hard & sacrifice much to be here for the love of the game and the opportunity to advance their careers. It is no small feat to get to this level and we need not forget that! This board needs to step in and demand better for THEM! It is clear these players love this community, we all see them around and they are always cordial and engaged, they seem to be tight as a team. So where is the problem? Seems pretty obvious, the organization is not doing their best to create a winning culture and they owe to this team to step down!

    1. that is the best comment I have seen here, finally someone made a true statement. we all need to focus on how this teams lack of vision is effecting the players and their futures.
Also, why doesn't the team management see what the fans see? Many of us can see the lack of quality in our coaching and management. So also they must see it. I am tired of coming to games and not being entertained, I paid for season tickets, travel 30 minutes to the games, 50/50s overpriced popcorn and beer, spend a lot every winter to support and don't feel like I'm getting my moneys worth, and am not alone obvious by the dwindling crowd. I don't like to be a quitter but if things don't improve soon, it may be my last season.

    2. Really people are you that dump. 7 years of the Bd and bad management and you wonder why we are in this situation! Come on this team has been spiraling out of control for years. They need to sell the team and have one owner. And I am a fan, shareholder and season ticket holder and think that coaches have done there best with what's happend to them and the lack of talent provided to them.

    3. @09:36... speaking of dumb... as a shareholder, YOU have the power to make changes to this organization... yes, the coaches have been given a lack of talent, yet "you" and the other shareholders have kept the GM in charge...

"you" folks promoted someone from an already unsuccessful program... it's no coincedence that Everett hired Portland's Asst GM a couple years ago and they now lead the tough US division... even when Leth made the League Final, it was partly a result of hiring Kootenay's Asst GM...

As for selling the team, public-owned SC develops its players pretty well and they have less resources than Leth... why? because their shareholders and Board hired a quality person to do the job...

  4. If you can't do well on the teams our players went to then you probably should not be playing Hockey. Our top players are not even there top players because they have so much talent. Not hard to figure out !! Look at Kootney two top players made all the difference.

  5. I wouldn't expect them to be their top players, as while they are here they receive no development. Yes, these players are not their top players, but they show improvement. Give these players under someone developing them the 4 years they are here and we will have top players. Unfortunately players come here and we see no development in them until they are moved out.

  6. 101 games ago when this coach took over this team, there were plenty of high end skilled hockey players here, they have all left because they felt that there was not much in the way of development taking place, so there is no argument that this coach has no players to work with. Until there is better management/leadership, nothing is going to change and no high end prospects in their right mind should ever sign here until it does! This franchise needs to be sold to a private owner that has the financial means and the where with all to operate this franchise in the way that WHL franchises are meant to be run and that is keeping the league "development" mandate as the main focal point. These players deserve much more than they are getting right now! When does this nightmare end???

  7. We are in a holding pattern for a while because the shareholders vote on a sale at the start of next seasons AGM. The fact that we must wait one year from the time the motion is brought foreword is a tad hilarious. It does give the BOD a chance to organize their "the team will move" scare tactics together though. Until then there is nothing we can do but wait and watch the dumpster burn. Fire extinguishers will be delivered in the fall hopefully via the shareholders. Unfortunately unless emergency measures are taken by the league we just have to wait.

  8. The challenge with the vote in the fall is that it works differently than other votes. It isn't one vote per shareholder, it's one vote per SHARE. That means that one shareholder who owns multiple shares get to vote multiple times. I don't know who owns shares or how many but this could put quite a spin on the vote. If they own enough it could control the whole decision one way or another.

  9. Plus, as mentioned at the AGM a sale of the franchise would require a 75% vote in favor to sell. This speculation on a vote could be a mute point as WHL Commissioner Ron Robison stated to City Council, that the franchise had to make considerable progress both on the financial side and the on ice product. Neither of which has happened. In fact they will likely run out of cash by early January and this team had but 6 wins and will not make the playoffs, (especially when the GM continues to make trades that weaken (not strengthen) the team).

  10. "Unfortunately unless emergency measures are taken by the league we just have to wait." Let's just hope that the league steps in because this season is shaping up to end worse than last season! If this is allowed to continue, it would be very difficult to ice a team when no players show up to training camp next fall? I believe that the league has to do something soon?
