Canes Lose 5-2 in Swift Current

It wasn't ever a close game in Swift Current as the Broncos beat the struggling Lethbridge Hurricanes 5-2 Friday night.

Coda Gordon scored twice for the Broncos who out shot the Canes 44-18 in this game.

Swift Current opened the scoring when Andreas Schumacher scored at 6:02 to make it 1-0 for the home team. That was followed up late in the period with a goal by Colby Cave to give the Broncos a 2-0 lead after one period of play. The Broncos were all over the Canes in the opening 20 minutes. They out shot the Hurricanes 19-3.

In the second, the Hurricanes got on the scoreboard. Zane Jones scored at 9:22 to cut the lead to 2-1. A few minutes later though the Broncos regained their two goal lead, when Coda Gordon scored his first of two on the night to make it 3-1. Former Hurricane Jay Merkley then got in on the action, scoring a power play lay at 14:20.  That made it 4-1 Swift Current and that would be it for Stuart Skinner. He was replaced by Zac Robidoux for the final period of play. The Canes were being out shot 32-11 at this stage in the game.

In the third, Swift Current would jump ahead 5-1 Coda Gordon's second of the night. That held up until the final few minutes of the game when Taylor Cooper scored for the Hurricanes, but that's as close as the Canes would get in this game, losing 5-2.

The Hurricanes have just one victory in their last 13 games. The loss drops their overall record to 6-18-3-1 in 28 games this season. Offence has been a major issue for this club all season and with the trade of Riley Sheen a few days a go to Red Deer, that certainly won't help in that department. They've only scored 65 goals this season, the lowest in the WHL. The next closest team in goals for in Saskatoon and the Blades have scored 15 more goals than Lethbridge.

The club is still 8 games away from the halfway point in the season and the chances of making the playoffs are fading away with each loss. Let's face it, the Canes need to go on quite the winning streak just to have a shot at a playoff spot. This is not Pat being negative here, this is reality. The numbers don't lie folks. One victory in 13 games isn't going to cut it.......period. Quite frankly, this has been going on far too long. Skids like this are tough on everyone involved, especially the players. Some serious soul searching needs to start going on from across this organization from top to bottom in my opinion, but hey what do I know!

The Canes are back home Saturday (Dec. 6) to host Riley Sheen and the Red Deer for their annual Teddy Boss and Toque Toss game. It doesn't get an easier with the WHL's top team, the Kelowna Rockets in Lethbridge on Wednesday (Dec. 10).

Thanks,
Pat

  1. Team arrived just in time to play - forgot about the time change when going to SC - wonder why the game was never close!

  2. Soul searching? Does not take much to figure out whose souls need to be searched. Just a glimpse at the Sheen trade (Riley stated in the Red Deer Advocate that he did not ask for a trade). But that aside, the supposed key player in the deal was 17 year old Burke coming to the Canes. This is what Brent Sutter said in an interview (from the Red Deer Advocate) about Burke. “With Burke, he’s a 17-year-old who if he’s going to play in the league he has to be a top-nine guy, and with our depth up front he wasn’t going to play that here this year and there’s a chance he wasn’t going to next year,” said Sutter. So Brent Sutter's evaluation of Burke is that he might be a top nine player. Canes do not need more top 9 players, they need skill and scoring. Does the GM of the Hurricanes enjoy the "thanks" he gets from other gm's in the league while the fan base scratch their heads wondering what the hell is going on?

As I mentioned before, the Canes have 9 dmen, 15 fwds, which means that even whenever all players are healthy there will be at least 4 players sitting out each game. So much for their development!

A lot of fans are blaming DB for this situation, but he is responsible for accepting some of the blame, but Robson is providing the talent or lack of it, for him to work with. Good luck with that!

    3. Kudos to you Pat for speaking out. That can't be easy for you to do. I am so frustrated and fast losing all interest in the team.

  4. Not that it really matters but Tri-City and Seattle have each only scored 9 more goals than the Canes with 76. They are both behind Saskatoon who have 82 goals.
