Canes Lose 4-2 to Kamloops Blazers

The Lethbridge Hurricanes dropped a 4-2 decision Sunday afternoon to the visiting Kamloops Blazers at the ENMAX Centre.

The Canes have only have one victory in their last 16 games.

Colin Shirley scored a pair of goals to lead the way for the Blazers. Kamloops opened the scoring late in the first period with a pair of power-play goals. Shirley scored at 18:58 on a 5-on-3 advantage. Then a few seconds later Cole Ully scored another power play goal to make it 2-0 Blazers. Then just 14 seconds later Kamloops would get another goal, Shirley's second of the game and just like that it was 3-0 Kamloops after one period.

In the second, the Hurricanes would get two of those goals back, both courtesy of Zane Jones. Jones notched a power play goal at 5:09 to cut the lead to 3-1. Then just over six minutes later Jones scored again. That made it a 3-2 game in favour of Kamloops through 40 minutes.

In the third, Ryan Rehill added some insurance at 12:35 to give the Blazers a 4-2 lead. That's as close as the Canes got in this game. The loss dropped the Canes overall record to 6-20-3-2 on the season. Kamloops out shot Lethbridge 41-20.

The Hurricanes have just two games left prior to the WHL's annual Christmas break. The Canes play in Moose Jaw Tuesday (Dec. 16) and in Regina Wednesday (Dec. 17).

After those two games, the Hurricanes are off for nine days and then don't play again till December 27 when they host Medicine Hat.

Thanks,
Pat

  1. I liked the play of the Dmen in the last two games. Kord, Sayers and Walters generating some offence is welcomed and fun to watch.

  2. Yeah fun to watch them loose. Same team same talent and same #%#% Now we have a GM just saying what we have always known. This is going to take years for them to turn it around. SELL THE TEAM

  3. Selling the team doesn't solve the problem. All it does is put the onus on a millionaire owner and gives the public less opportunity to brow beat a board of directors. By all accounts this board is doing things much better than the previous one. New president, more communication, new GM with league wide respect, new training staff to increase the level of care for the players and now some players being moved who have been less than ideal team mates. Looks like a good start. A new owner would mean another new start, ask Saskatoon how that is going?

  4. I am pretty sure Paisley addressed why there was nobody available for "half" a day at the press conference. AND considering the second half of the hammer dropping it's pretty clear why they waited RK.

  6. A owner with deep pockets could provide so much more for the players, give them all the extras that this team can't because they have no money. And if your kid was a high draft pick would you send him here! There has been know consistency here ever and it's never going to change.

  8. Alright you guys that say sell the team? There is a new board new gm! This a big change! They actully have people in place that know hockey now. You have to give them 2 years to let them do there thing. The whl has say in this they even had meeting I think Last Monday? The whl keeps a close eye on the canes cause of the situation that they are in. All im really trying to say is don't count your chickens until they hatch. Give it some time now! Yes I know the canes hasn't been in the post season since 09, but we got people with hockey smarts. There is going to growing pains this season but next year it's going to change! I'm willing to put my money where my mouth is! I've been to 5 games this season im going to tickets for rest of the season to support our team now cause the board step up to the plate and fired BR. There is change coming and I'm going to be there supporting it 100%! And thanks pat for keeping the blog going. DH

  9. This community owned team has been to a memorial cup and a league championship and there were no cries to sell the team then. They have at times lost money with a good team and made money with a not so good team. The one thing that no one wants to discuss is the fact that community ownership 100% guarantees this team stays in Lethbridge, private ownership decides where this team plays and that could very well be elsewhere. It looks to me like the changes taking place are ALL good ones and with that will come a much better environment for players, they will be more successful on ice, people will come to games and this will be turned around. If I am wrong on that then maybe I can cheer for the Fort McMurray Hurricanes.

  10. Any ownership change will involve a 10-20 commitment to Lethbridge. Thats a guarantee, the league does not want this club moved and will not allow it to be sold to someone that does.

    1. Chris, you have an iron clad guarantee from the league that they will keep this team here? Hah, that is laughable! Sure the league wants a team here, they wanted one here in 1985 as well. They really, really want a team in Winnipeg too. If a private owner loads the bus with his assets and heads to Winnipeg, For McMurray, Nanaimo, Chilliwack, etc you can bet you last dollar that move will be approved by the league. And if there was a 10 year commitment to Lethbridge, that is not long enough. Community ownership is the only guarantee this team stays in Lethbridge.

    2. No guarantee the team stays in Lethbridge either. The league controls who has franchises so if they see fit they pull the franchise. You can have a team, but it won't be playing in the WHL.
