Canes Fire Coach Berehowsky

Effective immediately, the Lethbridge Hurricanes have relieved Head Coach Drake Berehowsky of his coaching duties.

Berehowsky was in his second season with the hockey club after being hired in June 2013, being named the 12th coach in franchise history.

A further announcement will be made in due course.

  1. This should not come as a surprise to anyone that follows the Hurricanes. However, Berehowsky is not the sole person to blame for this mess. Some of the trades that he has had no input on, have left him very little talent to work with. He is not the only person to be shelved. No replacement named. Maxwell will likely be the head guy tomorrow night, and Robson might move Anholt in as head coach. I said might. Trouble is, there are not many candidates out there who are available. Canes can't go after any assistants on current teams without some kind of compensation and it is usually a player or a pick.
So the timing of this is very interesting to say the least.

  2. A copy of my WHL 54Board post.

Just let me make one thing clear. Yes, I am ecstatic that the Canes finally did what should have been done at the end of last season. For context, the Canes finished last season on an 0-14-0-0 run. DB's overall record with the Canes is an abysmal 18 wins out of 101 games.

I want to make it abundantly clear though that I wish Mr. Berehowsky and his family all the best on what must be a brutally difficult day. It is nothing personal, but when you get an F- on your report card for a year and a half, it's time to look for a new career. I seriously wish him and his family all the best. I am willing to bet that once DB gets over the initial shock of this situation, he will actually feel a sense of relief. I can't even begin to imagine how the stressful this has been for Drake and his family.

    1. Well said. I wish him and his family the best as well. And I believe it will make him a better coach in the future.

    2. What Long run? This will make DB a better coach in the future? I can only pray for his family if DB does not know that being a coach is not for him, nor ever will be.

DB....find a new career for your families sake and your own sanity!

    3. LONG LONG LONG overdue.

VERY sad that the Canes have to pay the Drake even MORE green when he didn't deserve what he has already been paid. Without giving a pass to Robson, Drake has been the worst possible hire for this team and a complete failure as a Head Coach. If DB had ANY integrity or honor whatsoever, he would have handed in his resignation VOLUNTARILY within about 2 minutes of ending last season 0-14. Go sell your Culture Change somewhere down South where the folks don't know excrement from Corn Flakes. Folks in Southern Alberta are familiar enough with feedlots to know the smell of feces when we smell it.

As for the GM, you cannot replace nearly the entire roster (of your own draft picks) only to make the team WORSE with each move and yet take ZERO responsibility. Robson should have already been standing in the unemployment line when the Drake story broke.

And then they face the ROCKETS. OMG.

  3. Salary dump eventually. Shouldn't hire another. Anholt Maxis and Craig can do just fine. Might win the odd one too. Another waste by the BOD and hiring committees

  4. Interesting how Anholt is suddenly appearing in here. I wonder who is writing this stuff.......

  5. Kirk, I think Anholt is being named because he is the only other guy on the Canes payroll with WHL coaching experience... I doubt it will happen since he is the current Asst GM (a.k.a. advance scout, usually on the road)... but in saying that, this club never fails to surprise us and we can't ignore any possible scenario

  6. Finally fired a guy that should have never been hired. Now to fire the one that hired him.

  7. Best for all involved. Now if the Board can make the next obvious move and get rid of Brad Robson it would set the table for the league to move in and take control of this franchise.

  8. That would depend on how the teams articles stack up against the leagues. This is a legal question, just not a case of show up and take over. I'm sure the league and the private owners have no squib to get involved in some legal dispute. Hold our breath. The first step for the shareholders to express their desires is in place.

  9. Tough when a coach is completely set up to fail. Dealing with the carnage Preston left behind then dealing with a GM incapable of providing the tools needs for a quality on ice product. Good luck DB in future ventures.

    1. Preston never left any Carnage behind. The Canes just missed the playoffs his last year and the roster that DB had to start the season was a pretty good one. Just one example is Yakubowski who had 32 goals and 50 points. Also McKechnie had 26 goals and 43 points. He also has Watson, Pilon, Duke,Ramsey, Maxwell and Erkamps 35 points to name just a few more.

Somehow DB managed to turn all that talent in trash. Any half decent coach should have made the playoffs with that roster, yet the Canes won only 12 games.

Anyone can cut it how they like, but DB was a horrendous coach from day 1.

  11. I sure hope the board takes its time to be sure they have the right people in place. Looking at Anholt as a coach his w / l record is not very good. Last 4 years in P A. team got worse every year. Maxwell has a very similar looking resume. We are now back to where we were when Preston took over only with less talented players. At least team can give Maxwell some time to coach before a decision is made.
