Warriors Down Hurricanes 5-1 at ENMAX Centre

Two former Lethbridge Hurricanes combined for five points as the Moose Jaw Warriors beat the Canes 5-1 Saturday night.

Jaimen Yakubowski had a goal and one assist while Kolten Olynek added three helpers to help the Warriors to victory. After a scoreless opening period, the visitors broke the game open with three goals in the second period.

Jaimen Yakubowski scored early in the period with a goal at 2:34 to give Moose Jaw a 1-0 lead. The Warriors jumped ahead 2-0 three minutes later when Dustin Perillat beat Zac Robidoux on a power play. Moose Jaw kept the offence coming. A few minutes after that they struck again, this time Tanner Eberle scored at the 8:29 mark to make it 3-0 Moose Jaw. Those three goals in just under six minutes changed the complexion of the entire hockey game. The Canes got their only goal of the game midway through the second period on a power play, courtesy of Tyler Wong. That cut the Warriors lead to 3-1 after 40 minutes of play.

In the third, Moose Jaw put the game away when a pair of goal in the final five minutes. Torrin White, who was playing against his brother Jaeger for the first time scored at 14:40 to make it a 4-1 game and then in the final minute Austin Adam fired a shot by Robidoux to give Moose Jaw a 5-1 lead and that's the way this game would end. The Warriors out shot the Hurricanes 30-27. Moose Jaw was 1/3 on the power play and Lethbridge 1/6.

The loss was the Hurricanes 8th in a row and drops their record to 5-14-3-1 in 23 games this season. The Canes are only slightly ahead of where they were at this same time last season when the club has just 3 victories through their first 23 games.

Generating offence continues to be a huge problem for Hurricanes has the club enters the final week of November. The one goal Saturday gives the club a total of 54, still the lowest goals for total in the Western Hockey League to date. Every other team in the WHL has scored 60 or more to this point.

Ironically the last time the Hurricanes won a game was against the team the play Sunday afternoon (Nov. 23). The last time the Canes won was way back on October 29th when they beat Prince Albert at home. The Raiders fired their head coach after that and since then they've been playing better hockey. PA comes into this mid-afternoon game with a 5-5 record in their last 10 games and winners of two straight.

Game time is 4:00 pm MST. The Canes host Vancouver Wednesday (Nov. 26). They its on the road to the U.S. next weekend with games in Tri-City and Spokane.

Thanks,
Pat

  1. Pat. I sure hope Skinner is back soon, I think Robbie needs a break. I know everyone thinks they should fire the coach but I don't think that's the answer what is going to change, they are going to have the same problems and that is a lack of talent. The only real talent is Skinner and I feel that's how they won games but they need more. I will say the team looks to be stronger but they have no strong goal scorers and if that doesn't change nothing will. Pat what do think?

  2. I can't help but feel that the Hurricanes' predicament is somewhat similiar to the Edmonton Oilers. No, the Canes don't have a bunch of small, talented forwards. More similiar in that both franchises can't seem to win on a consistent basis and the more they lose, the more I feel the "other shoe is about to drop". Meaning, a change is coming. Either a trade, a firing, or the league will step in and take over. Something will have to give with both organizations.

    1. The similarities between the Oilers and Canes are simple both teams run by complete morons at every level. BOD=Lowe/Katz, MacT=Robson, DB=Eakins. All those guys are horrible at their jobs and help keep these two teams at the bottom of their respective leagues with their moronic decisions.

  3. Lack of scoring, lack of a couple of "game breakerz" fwds and a lack of a puck moving-great shot-offensive minded d-man are the problems facing the coaching staff. A huge shortage of skill would handcuff any coach behind the Hurricane bench. The only problem with playing Skinner too much in order to win games, is burning him out as he only turned 16.
    Future......bleak!

  4. Well at least they were only outshot by 3 and didn't give up 40+ shots. That seems to be the only kind of "wins" this pathetic team will get this year, not getting get totally destroyed is a postive.

As for what this team is missing: skill upfront, skill on defense, quality goaltending, forwards with grit defensemen with grit, forwards who can play defense, defensemen that can play defense, coach who has a clue, GM who can recognize talent, scouts that appear to actual know what hockey is.

If we can just get 20 new players, a new coaching staff, new GM and asst GM, new scouts and a totally new BOD this team might have a chance.

    1. Moon. Psychologists say that people who are continually finding fault in other people are not satisfied with their own lives . They will try and deflect their own inadequacies and misery on others thus making them feel better about themselves . You can get help .

Finding Fault???? Finding Facts???? Who's at fault when the facts state: 5 consecutive seasons with a losing record and currently looking like a 6th; 5 consecutive seasons without an appearance in the playoffs and it looks like a 6th; Hurricanes are the only team in the WHL who has not been in at least one playoff series in the last 5 seasons. Those are the facts!
I can't find faults in the facts.
So unlike your comment "You can get help" which was, directed at Moon, I can ignore it because I was not finding fault.

    1. RJS. You are right. These are the facts but blaming people who cause cause them is finding fault.
Everybody is well aware of these facts so why VENT about them adnauseam ? It does not serve any useful purpose except to make these people minimize their own failures.
I do agree with you in regards to the cheerleaders.

  6. Ok Ziggy...
Since you are an authority on people who minimize their own failures, (due to their finding fault with others) I will not mention any facts that could suggest fault in others, which according to you, would indicate that I am minimizing my own failures.

Just one question though. You state that you agree with me in regards to the cheerleaders. Of course I have said more than once that they should be gotten rid of. Which of course does imply that I am finding fault with the person who came up with the idea of using cheerleaders at Hurricane games. Since you agree with me in regards to the cheerleaders, you must then be finding fault!
