Canes Rally, But Lose 6-5 to ICE in Overtime

The Lethbridge Hurricanes earned a big point in a hockey game that looked as if that possibility was out of reach.

The Canes battled back from a 4-0 deficit, eventually took the lead, but lost 6-5 in overtime to the Kootenay ICE Saturday night in Cranbrook.

The ICE opened the scoring with a pair of goals in the first period. Levi Cable got things going at the 6:37 mark to make it 1-0 Kootenay. The ICE added one more before the buzzer. This time a goal scored by Luke Philp. That put the home team ahead 2-0 after one period of play.

In the second, the ICE increased its lead when Rinat Valiev score at 5:27 to make it 3-0 Kootenay. Then three minutes later, Kootenay made it 4-0 on a power play when Bryan Allbee beat Zac Robidoux. It looked as if the ICE were going to cruise to victory, but the Hurricanes would have other ideas. The visitors came charging back thanks to three goals from Zane Jones. Just 35 seconds after the Allbee goal, Jones scored for Lethbridge to cut the ICE lead to 4-1. Two minutes after that Jamal Watson scored to make it a 4-2 game.

A Lethbridge power play at 14:58 of the second period cut the ICE lead to 4-3, thanks to another goal from Zane Jones and before the period was over, Jones scored his third of the night at 18:24 to even the score at 4-4. The Canes scored four time in just under 10 minutes to tie the game going into the final period.

In the third, the Hurricanes took the lead for the first time. Taylor Cooper scored for the visitors to put the Hurricanes ahead 5-4. The scored stayed that way until the last minute. The ICE tied the game when Levi Cable scored his second of the hockey game to even things at 5-5 and sending this game to overtime. Just 10 seconds into the extra frame, Jaedon Descheneau fired a shot by Robidoux and the ICE would skate away with a 6-5 victory. Kootenay out shot Lethbridge 37-22 in this game. The ICE were 2/3 on the power play and Lethbridge 1/3.

The loss drops the Canes record to 5-9-2-1 on the season, but give Lethbridge some credit. They battled back from a big deficit to get a point. They now have points in 6 of their last 7 games. The ICE came into this game in last spot overall in the WHL standings.

The Hurricanes play back-to-back game at home this coming weekend. They host Swift Current Friday (Nov. 7) and Edmonton comes to town Saturday (Nov. 8).

Thanks,
Pat
