Pats End Hurricanes Win Streak at Three

The Regina Pats scored and scored often as they hammered the Lethbridge Hurricanes 8-1 Sunday evening in the Queen City.

The loss put a stop to the Canes first three game winning streak in nearly two seasons. Stuart Skinner started his 4th game in a row, including his 3rd game in three nights, but the Pats found a way to chase the star rookie goaltender in this game.

The Pats got things going in this game when Calgary Flames product Morgan Klimchuk scored at12:36 of the first period to give the Pats a 1-0 lead through 20 minutes of play.

Regina blew the game open in the second with four goals. Braden Christoffer, Adam Brooks, Patrick D'Amico, and Austin Wagner all scored for the Pats to give the home team a commanding 5-0 lead through two periods of play. Christoffer's goal was scored on the power play.

The Pats kept the offence coming in the third period, when Christoffer and D'Amico both scored their second goals of the hockey game to make a 7-0 lead for Regina. The Hurricanes finally got on the score board at the 9:36 mark when Lenny Hackman scored his first goal of the season to cut the lead to 7-1, but Regina added one more when Adam Brooks scored his second of the night to give the Pats a lopsided 8-1 victory. The shots favoured the Pats 46-36 on this night. Regina finished the game 2/4 on the power play and the Hurricanes went 0/2.

The loss ends the Hurricanes winning streak and drops their overall record to 4-9-0-1 in 14 games this season. The Canes next action is Wednesday (Oct. 29) at home when they host the visiting Prince Albert Raiders. The Hurricanes will host Brandon on Friday (Oct. 31).

Thanks,
Pat

  1. I cannot believe that Skinner did not win goalie of the week. I guess playing on a bottom of the pack team playing bottom seeded teams doesnt count.

  2. Well, well a huge surprise with the WHL selection of the goaltender of the week. Ok I will admit that Jackson Whistle had a good week including a shutout. But Whistle plays for one of the top two rated clubs in the WHL and are loaded with offensive and defensive stars. But the travesty of justice on the selection screams of favoritism by the WHL towards its upper echelon clubs. Stuart Skinner who (sorry guys) plays on one of the weakest teams in the WHL, has but 4 wins to their record, put the Canes on his shoulders can backstopped them to 3 straight victories. In the three games he allowed only 4 goals against, stopped 46 of 47 shots against Edmonton and then shut them out on 3 shootout shots. The only goal against in PA came in the last minute. Oh....and one little detail that the WHL be made aware of......Stuart is all but 15 years old.

  3. Sorry guys and Pat, but I am pretty sure the league counts all games played from and including, Monday to Sunday. Skinner's game on Sunday against the Pats took him out of the running for Goalie of the Week. In his 4 games this week he had a GAA of 2.19 and a save percentage of .942%

Good, but not great numbers. I know all the intangibles such as team strength etc. would help Skinner, but the league pretty much just goes by the numbers. Based on the numbers, I think Jackson Whistle deserved to win.

I just want to say that I think starting Skinner in Regina was beyond stupid. 3 games in 3 nights and 4 in 5. Way too much to ask of a 15 year old, particularly when you look at the number of shots he faces. Also what does that say to Robidoux, who is going to be playing a lot when Skinner is gone?

  4. I agree that Skinner should have walked away with the honors this week although I am willing to bet that his results in yesterday's game had a lot to do with it. My question is why the heck the coach decided to start the kid yesterday to begin with. He had already played the two previous days and just two days before that. Robidoux should have gotten the nod while Skinner got the night off.

  5. Maybe because Skinner is leaving and Robidoux is to be expected to play the next 5 or more games. Really not that hard to figure out but this comes from you negative people who have nothing better to do than complain.

  6. We have been to the memorial cup one time and just because spinner didnt win goalie of the week doesnt mean we are not going to the spring classic again.

  7. When your goalie gives you 3 starts like he did leading up to Regina and your team believes in him like the seem to, you give him the start. Particularly when you need the points as badly as we do. Let's say you start Robidoux (who is also a great goalie). And he gives up as many goals we did against Regina, then the talk is about how stupid it was not to start Skinner.

    1. Kirk, I agree we NEED the points as well, but let's also consider the fact that this was a 3 game in less than 48 hour road trip. Skinner is only going to be 16 next month. As much as we need the points, he was lit up against Regina last time, and had just had 2 great games. I think giving him the night off and letting him come home feeling great would have been the better option. Robidoux is a good tender and he needs to play as well. Overall I think it was a poor decision, I understand it, I just don't agree with it.

  8. I understand what you're saying. It's ok to have different opinions. Either way, the outcome would have been the same from a win/loss perspective. Skinner will bounce back I'm sure. He'll come back with more good experience from the U-17 and be ready to give Robidoux a rest. Go canes!
