Cougars Down Hurricanes 6-2 in PG

The early season struggles continued Wednesday night for the Lethbridge Hurricanes. The Cougars opened up a 5-1 lead and then cruised on to a 6-2 victory over the Canes in Prince George.

The home team got on the score sheet early in this game. Just over three minutes into the first period, Jari Erricson scored his first of two goals on the night, beating Stuart Skinner to give PG a 1-0 lead. The Cougars jumped ahead 2-0 just past the mid-way point of the period when Colby McAuley scored a shorthanded goal. Lethbridge did get one of those goals back before the end of the period when Dexter Bricker notched his first-ever WHL goal to cut the PG lead to 2-1 after one.

In the second, the Cougars blew the game open with three more goals. Jari Erricson scored his second of the game on the power play to make it 3-1 Prince George. That was followed up just over a minute later with a goal from Kody McDonald to make 4-1 and then in the final minute of the period the Cougars would take a commanding 5-1 lead when Chase Witala scored for the home team.

In the third, the Hurricanes scored their second of the game when Kord Pankewicz got his first as a Hurricane to cut the PG lead to 5-2, but the Cougars would seal the deal with an empty net goal late in the game off the stick of Cal Babych. That would make it 6-2 Prince George and that's the way this one would end. Zac Robidoux played the final period for Lethbridge in goal, in relief of Skinner who was pulled after allowing 5 goals on 33 shots through two periods of play.

Again the shots on goal stats were an issue for Lethbridge. The Cougars out shot the Canes 42-27. PG went 1/7 on the power play and the Hurricanes finished the night 0/5. The loss drops the Canes record to 1-4-0-1 in 6 games this season.

The Hurricanes have the day off Thursday, but conclude this BC trip with a pair of tough games on the weekend. Friday (Oct. 10) the Hurricanes play the Kamloops Blazers for the second time in a week. The Blazers are off to a solid start with 5 wins in their first 8 games. The Canes will finish off the trip against the WHL's number one team Saturday (Oct. 11) in Kelowna. The Rockets are a perfect 7-0 to start the year.

Thanks,
Pat

  4. What would a bankrupt imploding franchise be worth to a private investor? Surely the shareholders would be in for a loss. A good deal might be held if they auction the canes franchise off!

  5. Shares have no value outside of the right to vote. Repeat: The shares owned by shareholders should not and are not comparable to shares in Microsoft or any other business. You get a vote for the board, you do not get money if the team sells.

In Kamloops, the shareholders became shepherds of the money paid for the team in a trust AND retained the right to buy the team back for that amount.
