Regina 6 Lethbridge 1: Canes Lose 6th Straight

The Regina Pats scored three times in the second period and cruised to a 6-1 victory over the Lethbridge Hurricanes Saturday night at the ENMAX Centre.

The Canes scored the first goal in this game when Carter Folk was sprung free on a breakaway in the first period. He scored his first of the season to give Lethbridge a 1-0 lead. The Pats tied things up late in the period when Dryden Hunt scored at the 18:30 mark to even things at 1-1 after 20 minutes of play.

The visitors really took over the game in the second with three goals and out shooting the Hurricanes 18-6. Colby Williams scored at the 6:33 mark to give Regina its first lead of the night. That was followed up at the 15:05 mark with a goal from Austin Wagner who made it a 3-1 game. That Pats then added one more with just six seconds remaining in the period when Morgan Kilmchuk scored on a 5-on-3 power play to give the Pats a comfortable 4-1 lead after 40 minutes of play.

In the third, the Pats got another power play goal. Connor Gay scored at the 1:12 mark to increase Regina's lead to 5-1 and before it was all said and done, Patrick D'Amico scored off a nice pass from Pavel Padakin to make it 6-1 Regina and that's the way this one would end.

Regina out shot Lethbridge 35-30. The loss drops the Canes record to a WHL worst 1-8-0-1 in 10 games. Regina went 2/4 on the power play. The Hurricanes were 0/6.

The Canes hit the road for their next four games, including three games in three days next weekend in Saskatchewan. Their next action is Tuesday (Oct. 21) when they take on the defending WHL and Memorial Cup Champion Oil Kings in Edmonton. Then it's off to Saskatoon, Prince Albert, and Regina next weekend.

Thanks,
Pat

  1. We want this team to succeed so much. I wish we could hear the discussions happening right now amongst the board members and especially between Robson and Berehowsky. They must be talking about replacing hockey operations staff at this point so that these players stand a chance. A change may not make them instantly better but a shake up will at least give them hope and let them know the organization is willing to do what they can to help them get out of this situation. Often times all you need is a little change. At least I would hope these conversations are happening.

  2. The new prez has his first big decision in front of him right now! Pretty clear that the players do not believe in Berehowski what so ever and now we have fans climbing the glass behind our bench??? 10 games is enough now, if this is allowed to continue there will be the next wave of defections coming right up as I highly doubt that there are many players that have to gut to deal with this for another 62 games!!! They need something new to believe in right now!!! Might be money well spent to pay Berehowski to stay home now!!!

  5. The team is struggling, but is it really the coaches fault? Seems like he was fighting an uphill battle since he got here. Robson is the one who makes the trades...remember...the most recent, making us the laughing target of the WHL. It's his own family who are the scouts for our team. It's also Robson who hired his bestie to be an assistant coach, who then turned around to sue the team. So maybe, letting him go and letting the guys who actually have pro experience run the team...may actually help to turn things around. Until that occurs, NO ONE should even think about coaching the Canes!

    ReplyDelete
  6. If a board member is currently coaching a minor hockey team with the ex-coach who sued the Hurricanes, would this not be considered as a conflict of interest? I guess undermining is just acceptable with this team under it's current management.

  7. Promote Berehowsky to GM and coach. Give him a couple of years and things will change.

  8. I'm laughing. "Pretty clear the players do not believe in Berehowsky." Easy to tell that from the stands no doubt. You must be a psychic AND a hockey expert! Great combination! We'll tap you if any good roles come up with the Canes.

I'm not sure what the problem is exactly but I think like Darren said a post ago that there just isn't enough skill left on the team(except Goaltending) to win games. There playing hard but with almost all of the skill sent packing there just isn't enough left. Just my thought.

  13. This coach has now run this team for 82 games of which they have won just 13? That is a whopping 15.9% since he has taken over the head coaching duties, so won the current pace this season that will be 19 wins out of 144 games which will again lower the winning percentage to 13.2% over two completed seasons, this is what development looks like in the WHL, sorry, don't buy it, some kind of change is needed now!

  14. Jake. The coach had a assistant coach who was undermining every thing he did and then you have a GM who trades everything away for nothing and that leaves him with a team who is not talented enough to play in this legue. You can't go for years without second round draft picks and Draft picks that don't show up. This coach ended up in a sinking ship and anyone who has any Hockey sence knows it. Know one can coach this team to success. Sad but true!!!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  15. Maybe Players are done because they know the talent isn't here. How many Nhl drafts do we have? Have you looked at the other teams. I actually feel bad for these coaches, they are former Nhlers so they know how to compete I can't imagine how frustrating this is for them. We all thought Maxie was going to make big changes with the Defence and look at them. I guess it's true your only as good as your Horese are.

  16. With all this talk about firing coaches and such, it's my belief that they fired the wrong coach. Coach Lukowich seemed to understand the WHL (as he knew the Hurricanes were not in compliance with certain rules) and I'm sure he knows defence. I just think the wrong coach was let go.

    1. Darren, are you saying that keeping around a guy who back stabs the head coach by telling his defensive line not to listen to the head coach is worthy of a head coaching job? He told all his defensive players not to listen to Drake because he had contacts in the NHL. That's the primary reason for his dismissal. Do you have a child on his Peewee team, the one he is coaching with a board member, who he has also told will make it to the NHL? ~Ian D.

  17. I am a born and raised Lethbridge Hockey Fan, I don't think of my self as experience but I have been involved in Hockey for a long time and have watched the Canes for years. We all know this team has been in trouble for years and to put the blame on the current coaches is not fair. We hire coaches and fire coaches and the problem never changes, don't you find it strange that the same problem has been happening year after year. Yet everyone wants to fire the coach again? I sure hope the new BD looks deep into this problem and doesn't take the easy road out like everyone else has.

    ReplyDelete
  18. I don't care who coaches this team. Because even a top notch coach will not be able to get much more out of this group of average players. Outside of Skinner (who I hope does not get burnt out) there is not a top rated forwards who can be a game breaker. There is not a top rated defenseman who can control the game from the back end. The talent on this team is a collection of mediocre players who other teams have gladly traded away. There is only one person who is responsible for this excuse of a hockey club. It is the GM who was the Assistant GM to Preston and look at what has transpired. First and second round draft picks of previous years gone! Players not wanting to play here (Berehowsky or not), Players refusing to sign with the club. Bellerive will be next.
Maxwell, Hay, McCrimmon, Lowry, non of them could make this team a playoff contender. They all need talent, speed and size. Trouble is, the kids that could develop into top talent will be held back. Mediocrity breeds mediocrity.

  19. Without a doubt this team is short on talent, due to poor trades, defecting players, and a lack of player development. Quit pointing the finger at Drake first and look at your GM and scouting staff. Anholt sitting as assistant GM is a joke and you can tell he is on a different waive length than Robson. Turf Robson and let Anholt run the show and review the organization from top to bottom. He built some outstanding teams in PA and knows this league. Maxwell is a coach and a motivator. Without a doubt he is ready to go as Head Coach if a new GM demanded that change. Culture change needs to happen now, well before the ownership change.

  20. 21:24 and 21:53. Your opening lines of your comments are quite correct. The boys held in for most of the first and then the Pats bus wheels fell off. Talent is a big issue with most of our players marginal third or fourth liners elsewhere (ouch). They work hard for the most part so I am not putting them down. Takes a lot to show up every day for "work" knowing full well that you could be the next out of town or realizing the disappointment that nothing has been done to improve the environment. We can all say DB makes Preston look like Scotty Bowman, but the reality has been spoken above. This is on the current GM who was Asst. GM and previous head scout. This is his crew. Toe Blake, Imlach, Babcock all would need divine intervention to have success here. The issue is talent.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Blaming "talent" is blowing smoke up everone's butt. The fact is, every kid that plays in this league is talented. Even people like BR recognize that. Blaming the teams woes on a lack of "talent" is ridiculous. If you have been to any of the games, and watched the line of Sheen, Watson, and Jones when they are on a roll and skating realizes that none of these guys are "third or fourth liners" from other teams. The scoring "talent" level on the team drops off pretty quickly after that....but...let's be realistic.

Defense wins games, pure and simple. And watching whatever moronic "system" that is being taught to these guys is almost painfull. Guys are still running around in their own zone, and there always seems to be someone open. The fact that 5 of the six goals on Saturday night were scored from 10-20 feet out is not defensively responsible. Add in many 40+ shot against games, and it's obvious that our "system" is anything but.

As far as the Erkamps, Pilon, Duke et. al situation, keeping these guys would have been a mistake. They quit on their team, and their team mates, and if they had stayed, would have been absolutely cancerous in the dressing room. The only mistake that BR made was pulling the trigger too quickly. If it was me, they would have all stayed home until a suitable deal could have been found.

"Blue collar" hockey teams can win. But they have to have the tools in place to do so. Give these boys those tools, and see what this "no talent" team can do!

  22. The Fact is they are running on one line you can't expect those kids to be able to carry the whole game night after night . They do need more talented players to compete. What happened to our Russians? I thought that one of them was a third round pick and should of been able to put up big numbers. There are to many mistakes with the players they have brought here and know one is accountable for these mistakes. If these players don't understand the systems the coaches are teaching then they should not be in this league because it is one of most simple systems that I have seen. This team has three great talented coaches with years of playing and coaching under there belts and its time that they are able to run the show. We all respect Maxie and he seems to be struggling with the D that's got to tell you something. WE NEED MORE TALENT!!!!!'

These kids are all elite players, from elite programs. They have all played high level hockey, and have all played within successful, playable defensive systems.

It is apparent, Dave, that you and DB are two of the only people around who understand this "simple" system. Hats off to you!

The team is on the verge of destruction, no people in the stands mean not enough income for an already close to bankrupt team, obviously choices by management and coaching ability are not creating a competitive team which is what's needed to fill the stands, I for one am not being entertained and that is apparent with most fans as we all should have noticed the fans leaving well ahead of the final buzzer on Saturday. The board of directors need to act fast and get a staff capable of getting this team on the go before there are no fans left. And yes there is talent on this team, they only need direction from behind to help them develop.

  28. I think the organization has to finally stand up to the players who want to get a trade or walkout, suspend them and hold on to their rights when they get drafted they make their decision then to play Jr A when they sign a contract, When it gets tough going suck it up or and play hard or give up your dream to play pro.If they knew they would not be traded, most would not pull this stuff,
Many NHL players have been buried in the minors because they pulled the pout. Robson needs to get a plan All of the problem players he has been involved in their selection, its time to get some good hockey blood in the organization.

  31. As fans of the Hurricanes, we are now in the position of being dammed if they do or dammed if they don't. With the current status of this club and without the immediate prospect of the infusion of top end talent, it would take at least another two seasons for this team to be rebuilt and reach the playoffs and that is IF the current management/coaching staff could pull it off. Based on past history that is unlikely. So, the solution is to sell the team......but whomever the new ownership person/group is, they would be faced with the same predicament. A complete refit of the team to become a playoff contender would take at least two more seasons. So Hurricane fans are dammed if the status quo stays the same and dammed for at least two more seasons if the team is sold. However, there is one possibility that would change the whole scenario. If the Canes were sold and moved to another location (in which they can build a winning franchise) and an established franchise moved relocated here. That would not happen mid season. Of course that exact possibility was mentioned a lot last spring, with the Winnipeg Jets buying and moving the team, to be replaced by the Kootenay Ice.
Selling the team mid season only creates more problems for the ownership. Getting a first rate gm and coach would be tough at best and reaching into the staffs of teams could cost at least a top rated player and/or a top draft pick.

So anyway you look at it, Hurricane fans, season ticket holders are going to have to wait at least another two seasons before we realize the lofty goal of seeing playoff games at the Enmax.

Hurricanes face 3 tough opponents and one that seems to have found their way to winning games, on this road trip. Realistically, the club will be fortunate to win 2, more likely 1 (Saskatoon??) which by the way will be game 12 and 1/6th of the season. That could equate to a 1-10-0-1 record and thus 6-60-0-6 record!

If we continue to do nothing, future picks will choose to go elsewhere (as to not be subject to ridicule when they want out when their careers are going sideways).
If I was Jordy, Drake would be the last coach I would want to put my full faith into to make it to the next level.

    2. there is talent enough on this team to play exciting competitive hockey, probably not a league winner but exciting, the coaches do not have the ability to teach or motivate the players, replace the whole staff [maybe not Maxwell] but Berehowsky and GM for sure. Lets get the show on the road before we don't have fans or a team left.

  32. Why are we blaming Drake, all jokes aside he came into a team that was going down for sometime and we blame him. Stop blaming him and look where this started. We have missed out on 5 years of seconded rounders and Draft picks who have not come? And this is Drakes fault . There is some talent on this team, you could see a difference in how they are competing this year. So he has been developing these players it takes time. I know we all think we are experts but really we are not involved in the day to day operations of the hockey club and we have know idea what these coaches deal with everyday. Easy for us to say by sitting in the stands !!!!!!!

      What’s your point?
      Here is our “seconded rounders”
      From 2010
2nd round pick Craig Leverton – Traded to PA last season for Myer (who quit hockey last season). I believe this was an attempt to give Drake bigger players?
      Leverton’s 2014 stats – 11 games – 10 points and a plus 1
2nd round pick Macoy Erkamps – Traded to Brandon (sure you remember this recent trade)
      Macoy’s 2014 stats – 7 games – 4 points and a plus 4
2nd round pick Joel Topping – On our team last season and quit around Christmas to go to school. Not so sure this staff had any faith in Joel? But not sure just know he quit.
      From 2011
2nd round pick Kolten Olynek – Traded to Moose Jaw for Miles Warkentine. Another move to get bigger?
      Olynek’s 2014 stats – 11 games – 1 point minus 1
      Warkentine’s 2014 stats – 2 games – 1 point plus 1
2nd round pick – Carter Amson is still on our roster.
      From 2012
2nd round pick Cole Plotnikoff – Bust
      From 2013
2nd round pick Tak Anholt – Traded to Brandon.
From 2014 – Can’t play this year (or more than a set amount of games) but all look promising and two that I know of are signed.
“bad bad bad trades” most yes but in an attempt to cater to Drake and his excuse of lack of size and his “culture change”.
Most trades were made because many didn’t want to play for this organization. I don’t believe that Drake has NO responsibility in these kids wanting out. I guess you believe he is at no fault?
I also don’t believe we would have had 7 kids either quit or want out with a coach like Don Hay.

  34. I am blown away by those who even attempt to defend DB and BR on here. Someone mentioned DB is a great coach. OMG. Get a grip people. We are witnessing one of the worst teams ever to play in the WHL and maybe even the entire CHL.

Like they say, facts don't lie. Well here are some stunningly brutal stats. They are so bad, I had to check and then check again to see if these numbers are right. It seems entirely inconceivable that Berehowsky is still the Canes head coach given these stats. I know we are on a very tight budget blah blah blah, but take a minute to digest these numbers and then tell me that we can't afford to get rid of DB.

The Canes record for their last 40 games is 5 wins and 35 losses. That is a winning % of .125

The Canes last win in regulation time was way back on Jan 29 when they beat the P.A. Raiders 3-2

Since Jan 1st 2014 the Canes have just 2 wins in regulation time and 5 wins overall.

The Canes have won 1 game since Feb 12 2014. Ya that's right. We have 1 win in 8 months!!

The Canes are 1-23 since Feb 12. That is a winning percentage of .042% ... Over a 72 game season that = 3 wins!!

I don't know what to say. I was gonna make some closing argument, but if those stats don't stand on there own, nothing will convince some of you.

    1. Gotta agree, not winning because we don't have talent? Every player in this league must have some kind of talent to even have the privilege of playing in the WHL, so anyone that is troweling out that BS doesn't know much about this league? This league is about development and teams build through drafting these players and then teaching them and developing them how to be good citizens and good hockey players both on and off the ice. And that folks is in the coaching department! Secondly, we have an extremely weak GM, Mekeg, Yak, Pilon etc should have been given two options, play (while awaiting trade) or sit at home! No other options! Ron Robison was absolutely correct when he said that this franchise would not have success until the leadership and the management gets better. The new president and board of directors have an opportunity to make a course correction and a statement before more players pack it in here, there is no person let alone hockey players that can effectively deal with the mental strain of this amount of losing and negative energy, that's a fact! At least with some type of change in either category or both would at least provide a ray of hope for this young men! The CHL and the WHL are development leagues, teams that have strong development win hockey games and that friends, is the bottom line...no development = no success

    2. The problem is that we are chalk full of 3rd and 4th line talent. Hard work, which they do, will win you some games, but in the end talent wins out. Our former talent is spread out among other teams and they are doing well. What the GM is doing is tough to figure out. Will be lucky to have someone score 40 points this year. As to our 15 yr. Old goaltender, kudos to him. The reality is that he is a midget player and you can watch midgets free Sunday afternoon okay okay I will!!!!!!

  35. Will, while Preston's drive to making the playoffs didn't happen he improved the team every single year. The final year until his coaching the team was only 6 points out of the playoffs. With the exception of the twenties all the players returned for D.B.'s first season and I don't need to remind you how that turned out. So while the team was once so close they have never been further away from the playoffs then they are now. I absolutely believe that Robson plays a huge part in this fiasco but D.B. is far from a victim of the organization. I am sure D.B. is a good man and probably very smart but those things along with the fact that he played professional hockey does not make him a candidate for a successful coach as he is proving to us all.
