Jamal Watson New Hurricanes Captain

The Lethbridge Hurricanes announced their team captain for the 2014-2015 season and wearing the “C” will be Jamal Watson.

The 19-year old from Calgary, who becomes the 24th Captain in Hurricanes history, has played his entire WHL career with the hockey club. In 63 games last season Watson finished 4th in team scoring with 35 points, including 18 goals.

“Watson went through a lot of adversity last year, but through it all maintained his leadership qualities as well as his dedication to the team. He’s a character guy and has worked extremely hard at getting better as a hockey player each day as well as being a positive leader and role model in our dressing room” commentedHead Coach Drake Berehowsky.

The team will have six Assistant Captains this season who will rotate between home and road games. Riley Sheen, Nick Walters, Tyler Bell, Lenny Hackman, Tyler Wong and Carter Folk will all wear an “A” this season.

Sheen led the team in scoring with 49 points (19G, 30A) last season after being acquired earlier in the year from the Seattle Thunderbirds. Already a steady defenceman and leader, Hackman was joined by Walters and Bell were key additions to the blue line after being acquired from Brandon and Moose Jaw respectively. Up front Carter Folk, who played 43 games, with 9 points, after being acquired from Seattle will also wear an “A” along with Tyler Wong who finished 5th in team scoring with 31 points in 52 games last season.

  1. "Something right".......from not even being in the leadership group last year, this year "Captain".......Finally something done right. Great character guy, great choice......

  2. Interesting that Duke was not included in this group? It is also interesting that the Cane's are going with two 20 Dmen? One would be inclined to think that a trade for a 20 goalie or 20 forward will likely happen if keeping the puck out of our net and goal scoring continues to be an issue for this team? This team must have a good start this season or things will get really ugly, really quick! Have heard that the WHL will be represented at the AGM on the 30th, as they should!

  3. Why reward Duke with a letter? Here is a player that walked out on the team, dumped big time on the team for his "lower NHL draft selection". I am still of the opinion that Robson made a big mistake in bringing him back, which has to have caused problems with the other players. The Canes management have wasted picks and traded players for 20yr old goaltenders before. It is high time that they developed their young goaltenders. Looks like this will be the first year in a long time that it will actually take place. Good having two 20yr old d-men to play in front of the young goaltenders.

JR>>>>hope you comment on the WHL being at the AGM is not wishful thinking. The Cane's president will have to be very honest and upfront with the shareholders with the WHL in attendance.

    Time to buy a share......maybe.

  4. RSJ. I agree with your comments 100% . It's time to develop our younger goal tenders . I am confident they can do the job as well if not better than any 20 yr. old we MIGHT be able to get .As for the tow 20 year old d-men, they will be a steadying influence on this team.
