Canes Complete Blockbuster Trade With Brandon

The Lethbridge Hurricanes swung a multi-player deal Tuesday sending Reid Duke, Macoy Erkamps and prospect Tak Anholt to Brandon for 18 year old’s Ryley Lindgren, Kord Pankewicz and Brett Kitt.

5’11, 194 pound Centre Ryley Lindgren, the Wheat Kings 5th round Bantam pick in 2011, has played 75 games for Brandon with 19 points (9G, 10A). Lethbridge Hurricanes General Manager, Brad Robson likes Lindgren and what he can bring to the hockey club. “He’s a good, hard-working and gritty two-way centre. He’ll help us both in the offensive and defensive zone and he’ll continue to get better with time. We expect him to be a 30 to 40 point guy on the team.”

Left winger, Brett Kitt, at 6’1 and 201 pounds put up over a point a game in Manitoba’s Midget Triple A hockey league. In 37 games with the Wheat Kings last season he registered 10 points. Kord Pankewicz, a 5’11, 205 pound defenceman, has 15 points in 88 games with the Wheat Kings. In 4 games this season he is a +2 plus/minus rating with a goal. “Kitt is a big, strong physical player who wins battles, he’s strong on the forecheck and hard to play against. Pankewicz is a former first round pick of the Wheat Kings. He’s a big, strong kid with offensive upside, he plays both end of the rink and his experience in the league is a valuable addition to the team” commented Robson.

Duke, a 2014 6th round NHL draft pick of the Minnesota Wild was the Hurricanes 5th overall selection in the 2011 Bantam Draft. The native of Calgary had career highs in goals, assists and points last season with 40 points (15G, 25A) in 62 games. Erkamps was drafted by the Hurricanes in 2010 and played 66 games where he led all defensemen in scoring with 31 points, including 26 assists. Last season, Tak Anholt, the Hurricanes 2nd round pick in 2013 played with the Vancouver NW Giants of the BCMML. In 33 games he tallied 21 points including 12 goals.

The Hurricanes wish the best to all players as they continue their hockey careers with Brandon.

  1. We are shaking our heads over this one. I am actually a bit surprised that the WHL approved this lopsided agreement.

There are no words any more.

    1. Agree with you 12:53. Robson is completely reckless and incompetent. Raped the team of most points. These guys will have a tough time competing against most 3rd and 4th lines with numbers like these.
BTW, anyone see the first pick Euro skate against Calgary the other night. Is he injured or can he just not skate and stay up on his feet. Another bomb. Thanks RB. Keep up the good job.

    2. He was a scratch in Calgary and I think he only played in the 1st period last night. Early signs of a poor pick.

  2. At least now I guess we can see how the hurricanes would have been under proper management. That is, we will see if it truly was the players or the coaches/GM......I think we all know the answer to that one.

  4. The laughter coming from Brandon can be heard all the way to Lethbridge. The cursing from all the other GM's in the WHL certainly would be understood. What gives? Erkamps and Duke quit on the team, Anholt refuses to report and for their actions, they get rewarded with a trade.... to of all teams....Brandon. WheatKings already look like the team to beat in the East Division and certainly will be in the running for the Eastern Conference title. But they just got stronger as Robson gets taken to the cleaners again. I guess that feeling the heat of a 0-3 start compounded by the 9-2 thrashing by the Hitmen, caused panic.
Hasn't Robson been bitten enough by McCrimmon?
I have to agree with ANON 12:53, it is somewhat surprising that the WHL allowed this trade.
On paper it looks like another huge deal in favor of the Wheat Kings, especially if Anholt decides to report to Brandon. Duke and Erkamps will put up good numbers under Kelly. Lingren and Kitt's numbers can't compare with Duke's even if combined. So what did the Canes get in return......grit! Our problem is not grit, it is scoring!
Mind boggler to say the least.

    1. Duke will be a 3rd line player and Erkamps a bottom pairing defenseman so I don't think that they will put up good numbers.

  5. Chapters closed, spoiled brats gone. New guys will get an increased role, give it time to develop.

    1. Give your head a shake. It's NOT THE PLAYERS! Redirect your frustration to the organization and Board of Directors! "Give it time to develop"?? Give WHAT time?!! It's been 5 freaking years!!

  6. In my 20 years of following the WHL this might be the most lopsided trade I have ever seen.

  7. You can't blame these kids for not wanting to stay with an organization that is disfunctual..these kids are trying to make careers out their WHL experience ...if it was you ...would you stay ...you guys bash the organization and really..it does not effect you at all. Lethbridge is a career breaker right now...,point your finger in the right direction

  8. So it begins again !!! The WHL needs to step in and take over this team and get it in the right direction,

  9. Great to see these kids get a chance to go to a real organization. Like the kids before them that made the right decision to leave the team and not be associated with the crap that is the BOD/Robson/Berehowsky it is nice to see these kids get a chance to continue their careers and grow.

Condolences to the players coming here to enter into the gong show of management we have but based on their past performance/stats they likley weren't long for the WHL anyways if they stuck with a team other than the Canes.

  10. All that given away and not even a bag of pucks, cman Robson can you sleep at night? No draft picks indeed you are all out of your frickin minds!! OMG!!

  11. Unbelievable. Should read Duke for Hawerlyuk or Gabrielle...Erkamaps for Walz or Provorov. We should of taken Clague and it should of been Pilon for their first round pick and 20 year old Dman. Im sure these new kids will work hard but none of them scored more then 10 goal and all three did not have as many goals as Duke did alone. We can't score and we have no defence. Also what message does this send the kids on the team....Watson, Wong....hold out and you get what you want....do you think Bellerieve will sign now...fat chance. By the way Merkley is leading the league in scoring...who did we get....Derko...he scored a ton here...NOT. Robson should be banned from talking to MCrimmon and the league should be ashamed. We are done not only will we lose almost every game we have no one in the system. This will be bad for years. Last year we had the least wins in the entire CHL. I predict a repeat. WOW!

  12. It's really sad and disheartening to see all the high-end draft picks we got for the years of losing and only to see them now play and succeed on other teams. And us to end up with almost nothing. Really is a sad time to be a Hurricanes fan. Peter

  13. Yup, you get out what you put in! As Ron Robison said last spring, "this franchise will not realize any success until the leadership and management is better," truer words were never spoken!!!

  15. If no one shows up for the next home game then they will truly be the laughing stock of the league! Feel sorry for the players not the management. happy Halloween jokers.

  16. And the hits just keep on comin'!

As soon as I saw the title of the blog, I knew it was going to be another obituary.

I am surprised 'Crimmon didn't get a first rounder and some gas money out of Robson, too! I can't help but wonder if we paid some Manitoba PST on this deal as well.

I didn't check it, but if it is true that the only remaining players who were here when Robson took over are Hackman, Watson, & Wong, then (as much as I love all three) the most fair thing is to complete his utter failure and trade these three away; they ALL deserve to be ANYWHERE but here!

How can the three remaining loyalists possibly be expected to fit into this new Winning Culture we are developing here? I can't believe these two aren't escorted directly to the provincial border after this.

How many games in a row do they have to lose before Robson and Berehowsky both realise they are BOTH full of #&^% and that they don't have the skills to either manage or coach a WHL club?

May as well let the cheerleaders manage and coach the team!

  17. I been told by an ex board member that the coaches have no say in anything. I wonder if they go in each morning and pray he doesn't make trades. Well one thing for sure they won't have to worry about that there's nothing left.

  18. Everyone just needs to relax. Duke was a pilon this year when he played in the pre season and reg season. Erkamps wasn't even in town so why everyone so bent over his value. The team is better today than they were yesterday and will be better of tomorrow than they were last year. Lethbridge was not in a position of power making these deals as the entire league could smell the desperation. Nobody in there right mind would pay face value or over pay for any of the kids wanting out.

    ReplyDelete
  19. Relax? Why are there so many players wanting out? How is a team going to build a foundation when the core players want to be traded?

  20. Heres to the cheerleaders running the canes!!I Wont see ya'll at the games..

  21. I've also spoken to some connected people who say that the coaches have no say in player moves. They're made by the GM and there is no discussion. Heck, the coach isn't even involved in the draft. What would he know about what they need?????

    1. You're correct - it is true -- they have no say in what players they get and keep.

    2. You're correct -- the coaching staff have no say in what players they get and keep. It is all being run by the GM.

  22. You would think that if there was harmony among the GM set and the coaches, that the coaches would have been at the AGM. Just for some face time. Is there a need to remain reclusive and mysterious??

    1. The coaches were out in Coaldale the evening of the AGM. They were involved in a Hot Stove Lounge fundraiser for Coaldale Cobras Hockey. It was a fantastic night! Great Stories!

  23. Hahaha! Pump the breaks here guys! Erkramps was -63! He was dead awful in is zone! Couldn't do a flipping thing! So don't you guys say that we could had got something. as an organisation their hands were tied. They couldn't of had done any better, thats the best offer that they received. sure you could maybe waited but why would you want do that to your younger core? So then Duke and spread the cancer? Wake up people! i for one am not a fan of robinson but you had to make this trade in my opinion i think this is a good trade. It brings to table more D which they lacking in that department, for the guys that are mad about that prospect his leaning toward the college road. Unless the kings convince him to play.

    1. Erkamps is a quality individual and will flourish in Brandon away from the crap coaching he was getting in Lethbridge. If you're going to have an opinion, make it an educated one!

    2. -68? That's just plain out awful. He does have up side to his offensive game granted but when he plays In his zone its a like watching train coming off the rails. He couldn't win a battle at all! He gets out worked and he gets the puck has a he'll of a time getting it out on the PK! Anon 11:37 I agree with you on this.

  24. No clue ....Erkamps had over half a dozen team wanting him and knowing his worth....you choosing to assess his worth on that alone shows us how much you know....go back to your couch
