Canes Sign Prospect (F) Zane Franklin

The Lethbridge Hurricanes are pleased to announce the signing of prospect Zane Franklin to the Western Hockey League’s Standard Player Agreement.

At the WHL Bantam Draft in May, the Hurricanes drafted Franklin in the 2nd round (43rd overall.) The 1999-born Centre played with the Lloydminster Heat where he recorded 89 points, including 47 goals, in 27 games. He added another 27 points in 11 games in the playoffs.

Hurricanes Head Scout, Blake Robsonsays there’s more to Franklin than just being a pure goal scorer. “He also has very good vision, he runs the powerplay but also plays hard both ends of the rink and he’ll be able to put up big numbers in the future. He was also on the Alberta Championship team in the Major Bantam Hockey League.”

In July, Franklin was also among the top 80 players in the province invited to Team Alberta’s U16 Summer Development Camp. The players will continue to be scouted and shortlisted until Team Alberta names the 20 players that will make up the roster to compete at the 2015 Canada Winter Games.

  1. Heard through the grapevine three undrafted bantams from Lethbridge invited to rookie camps of other W teams. One to Kelowna and another to Kooteney for sure third unknown. What is wring eith Lethbridge scouting.

  2. There are only so many rounds in the draft. None of the other 22 teams drafted them either . There are a lot of kids not drafted then get listed by another team or ask a team for a tryout .This happens every year.

  3. Agreed, point is why are the locals not going to a Lethbridge tryout. Both Kelowna and Kootenay have had just a tad more success than Lethbridge. Why and what are we missing.

  4. Saw a lot of midget games last year. Did not see any kids worth an invite or draft. No sense in inviting a kid to camp just to cut him in three or four days.

  5. I guess you know more than Kelowna and Kootenay. My point is local equates to more interest and support thus better attendance and so on. What you are providing is excuses.

  6. But local does not equate to better talent on the ice . I hope these kids have success but that is a long shot. There are many examples of teams not drafting locals . They base their decisions on talent , not on where they live.

  7. Yeh I guess only those in Portland, Kelowna, Moose Jaw, Kootenay, Regina to name a few can see the local talent. Speaking of talent, it would appear that they should have looked locally considering out of town "talent" garnered them 12 wins last year and they have lost a million plus.

Checking last season's rosters Portland ,Kelowna , Moose Jaw had no locals, Kootenay had one ,the manager's son via a trade, Regina had one the same as Lethbridge . I can't follow logic. There were only a total 4 players on all the rosters born in Lethbrige. one 20 year old in Red Deer, one 20 year old in Regina , one player in Prince George and one here. If the talent isn't there that's what happens.

  10. Four more than in Lethbridge. Research the last five years. Then I guess from your logic Lethbridge can't produce players,. Rot from minor hockey up???

  11. You guys are beautiful. Congrats to the young kid for signing his WHL deal. None drafted invites are called looking for a surprise. Canes have some coming to camp from other cities which have WHL teams. I wish you guys would spend less time complaining about the team and each other and just support the kids. I moved away in 2007 and follow the team as closely as I can. I would give anything for my season ticket back. Stop complaining, go to the rink and show some support.

  12. So asking questions and chatting back and forth is not supporting the hurricanes? So according to you we should just shut up and lay out 500 to feel warm and fuzzy?

  13. Ya you should lol. All kidding aside, anyone who follows, works for, or plays for this team knows the struggles that have taken place. At some point the management, players and fans need to make a mentality change and overcome the negativity. With Anholt and Maxwell in place I can guarantee this "league run" team will be under a constant microscope. If they don't show some improvement change will happen swiftly. I truly hope this team can contend for a playoff spot so you guys have something positive to talk about.

  14. Good news, but don't see this helping the team anytime soon.
