Regina Pats Hammer Hurricanes 8-0

REGINA, SK. - It was the Dyson Stevenson show as the Regina Pats rolled over the Lethbridge Hurricanes 7-0 Tuesday night at the Brandt Centre.

The Hurricanes appeared to have opened the scoring on the road in this game until a video review overturned it. Carter Amson scored, but the video replay indicated the puck was directed in off a hand. Regina eventually opened the scoring on a goal by Dyson Steveson, who would actually become a goal scoring machine in this game. That goal made it 1-0 Pats. Just over two minutes later, Stevenson would get another one to put the Pats ahead 2-0. It looked like that's the way the period was going to end until Stevenson found a way to complete the natural hatrick, scoring his third goal of the period to give Regina a 3-0 lead after 20 minutes of play. The shots favoured the Pats 11-9.

In the second, the Pats kept it rolling with Morgan Klimchuk getting in on the action. Klimchuk snapped a bullet by Teagan Sacher to make it 4-0 Pats. That was his 3rd point of the night. That was it for Teagan Sacher. He allowed 4 goals on 18 shots. Jonny Hogue came in between the pipes and he didn't fair much better. The Pats scored twice on Hogue before the end of the period. Braden Christoffer scored to give the Pats a 5-0 lead and then in the final minute of the period, Patrick D'Amico took a feed from Morgan Klimchuk and he scored to make it 6-0 after 40 minutes of play. The shots were even at 23-23.

In the third, the Pats and Dyson Stevenson would keep it coming. Stevenson notched his 4th goal of the night on the power play to make it a 7-0 score. The Pats would get one more before the final buzzer sounded. Patrick D'Amico scored on a 5-on-3 power play late in the game to put the Pats ahead 8-0 and that's the way this would end. The Pats out shot Lethbridge 35-29. The Canes went 0/6 on the power play and Regina 2/6. The Hurricanes have lost 6 games in a row and see their overall record fall to 12-47-2-3 in 64 games this season.

From Global's Paul Kingsmith on Twitter: 11th time this season the have given up at least 7 goals. 4th time in 9 games.

Wong Returns to Line-Up

After missing a number of weeks with back-to-back concussions, forward Tyler Wong made his return to the Hurricanes line-up Tuesday night in Regina. Wong had been leading the Hurricanes in goals scored prior to his injuries. He has 14 goals on the season and 27 points in 44 games. Tyler Bell sat out the game against the Pats. He was suspended one game for a hit to the head in Medicine Hat last weekend. It's the third time a Lethbridge player has been suspended in the last two weeks. Prior to Bell, Macoy Erkamps and Carter Amson were also handed suspensions by the WHL disciplinarian.

Next Up

The Hurricanes are down to their final 8 games of the season. They're next action takes them into Brandon to face the Wheat Kings on Wednesday (Feb. 26). Game time is 6:00 pm MST. The pre-game show on CJOC at 5:30. This will be the final meeting of the season between the teams. The Canes beat the Wheaties the last time these clubs played in Lethbridge. That also happened to be the Hurricanes last victory. Lethbridge will have Thursday off and then play in Moose Jaw Friday (Feb. 29) and in Swift Current Saturday (Mar. 1).

Thanks,
Pat

  2. Morgan Kilmchuk with a 5 point night. I realize that is useless to ponder what could have been, and there is no guarantee that he would have been the same player here, but it sure seems the Canes missed the boat by not drafting him when they had the chance.

8 games left in this horrible season. Hopefully the boys can pick up a win or two in that stretch to have some sort of a minimal positive note to finish the season. If nothing else I hope everyone in that room plays hard for Ramsay. He's given a lot to this franchise and has been one of the few to play hard most nights this year.

  3. To the Lethbridge Hurricanes Players
We want to thank you for sticking it out this season. We believe in each and every one of you. It goes without saying that we feel you did your best despite what we see as terrible coaching and "systems", issues with the GM and a volunteer board who has stayed long past their welcome. You young men stayed strong and have stood together. This says so much of your character and we are proud of you.

A special note to Brady Ramsay
Thank you. You have become a tremendous leader for both veteran players and rookies alike. You always work hard, never quit and lead by example. We are sorry you never had the opportunity to experience the playoffs. You will be remembered as a fan favorite and a true Hurricane to the core. I hope you always think of Lethbridge as your second home.

To Drake Berehowsky, Brad Robson, Brian McNaughton, Brian Wichers, Dave Olson and Terry Huisman
You will be remembered for not only contributing to the demise of this team but doing nothing about it while happened and all just to satisfy your immense egos. True gentlemen who say they are passionate about this team would have accepted that they are only hurting the organization and would have resigned in a timely manner in order to allow someone else to come in and save these players.

    Shame on you all.

  4. THEN & NOW:

I wonder how Drake would say his "Culture Change" is coming along?
I wonder if "Drake's Metrics" are still showing that "the team is improving every game"?
I wonder if Drake still thinks, "a few players are having Career Seasons"?

The team that Robson & Drake inherited from Rich Preston won 28 games and was only SIX points out of a playoff position. I would describe Preston as an extremely disinterested GM/coach, but the on ice product was undeniably better by the numbers.

Of that 2012-2013 Canes team, Hood, Johnston & Rimmer graduated.

With a few smart trades, these three individuals could have been replaced, and the team's progression could have continued.

INSTEAD.... through "Culture Change," trades, cuts, or defections, from that 2012-13 team, Robson & Drake have removed &/or replaced ALL EXCEPT:

Ramsay, Duke, Watson, Erkamps, Hackman, Derko, Wong. (Olynek (4g), Estephan (3g), Nemeth (1g))

The Canes currently have 12 wins with 8 games to play.

The annihilations are becoming more common, not less common.

Unless Drake tells his players to DO THE EXACT OPPOSITE OF WHAT HE HAS TAUGHT THEM for the rest of the season, under Robson & Drake, the Lethbridge Hurricanes will post NOT ONLY the WORST record... BY FAR... since they came to Lethbridge in 1987 (20 wins in 2009 & 1987), but the WORST record in their ENTIRE 38 year history of playing a 72 game season since 1975-76 when they were called the "Winnipeg Clubs" (18 wins in their FIRST year as the Calgary Wrangers in 1977-78).

Without Drake as their Head Coach, the Orlando Solar Bears have missed the "Culture Change" so much, they have gone from second worst in their conference to second best. With over 20 games yet to play, they are only 4 points out of FIRST PLACE, and they are currently 10-0 in their past 10 games!!

    NOT 0-10,...10-0!!

So do you think that coaching can make a difference in ONLY ONE SEASON?

I wonder if Drake looks at this AMAZING turnaround IN ONLY ONE SEASON and wonders if JUST MAYBE HE IS NOT QUITE THE HEAD COACH HE THINKS HE IS?

BE THE MAN that former NHL hockey players SHOULD be, Drake.
The organization CANNOT afford to FIRE you and pay you out.
Give these players a CHANCE to win and TEAR UP YOUR CONTRACT, RESIGN, and MOVE ON, DRAKE!

  5. So well said by Mrs cc. I think we all feel so sad for the boys and what they have had to endure especially those like Brady Ramsey and Graham Hood and Dan Johnston before him, who never saw a playoff game in their WHL career thanks to the most poorly managed WHL team of the last 5 years. Those boys stuck it out and never quit while the incompetence grew all around them. Any Canes prospects who have not signed need to stay away from this organization unless ownership and coaching change! Play Junior A or demand a trade. Life and your hopes of a hockey future are too short to think anything about the current situation will change with current management. AR
