LETHBRIDGE - A three goal first period and three more in the second as the Calgary Hitmen to a 8-1 victory over the Lethbridge Hurricanes Saturday night.
The Calgary Hitmen, who've been scoring goals like crazy lately opened the scoring in this game. Just under three minutes into the period, Alex Roach lit the red light on the Hitmen's first shot of the night, beating Teagan Sacher to give Calgary a 1-0 lead. Just past the midway point of the period, the penalty parade continued for the Hurricanes and Calgary would make the home team pay again. Pavel Padakin with a picture perfect tip. He would score on the man advantage to give the Hitmen a 2-0 lead. Before the end of the period, Calgary would add one more when Adam Tambellini snapped the puck by Sacher to make it 3-0 Calgary after 20 minutes of play. The Hurricanes were out shot 12-9. Despite the three goals, it really wasn't a bad period for the Canes as they had a number of solid scoring chance, just couldn't beat goalie Mack Sheilds.
In the second, the Hurricanes started the period with a goalie change as Jonny Hogue replaced Teagan Sacher. It didn't long for the high-scoring Hitmen to get to Hogue. Chase Lang would find the back of the net to make it 4-0 Hitmen and then shortly after that Lang would set up Alex Roach for his 2nd of the game and Calgary jumped ahead 5-0. Before the end of the period, the Hitmen would keep scoring. Jake Virtnanen this time with his 7th goal in 5 games against Lethbridge this season. That made it 6-0 Calgary after 40 minutes of play. After that 3rd goal, Lethbridge made yet another goalie switch. Jonny Hogue out and Teagan Sacher back in. The shots were actually close, favouring Calgary 23-21.
In the third, the troubles continued for Lethbridge. Alex Tambellini would score his second of the game to make it 7-0 Calgary. More penalties for the Hurricanes when Macoy Erkamps was ejected from the game for kneeing. He was given a 5 minute major and on the ensuing power play Tambellini would make it 8-0 with his 3rd goal of the night. The Hurricanes were able to break the shut out bid for Calgary's Mack Sheilds when Giorgio Estephan scored late in the period, his 10th goal of the season. That cut the Hitmen lead to 8-1 and that's the way the game would end.
Calgary unloaded for 24 shots in the final period of play and out shot the Hurricanes 47-30 on the night. The Hitmen went 4/8 on the power play and Lethbridge 0/3. The loss drops the Hurricanes overall record to 12-43-2-3 in 60 games this season.

The Hurricanes are down to their final dozen games and play 5 of their next 6on the road as we head into the final three weeks of this 2013-2014 WHL season. The Canes will play Monday afternoon (Feb. 17) on the road in Edmonton against the Oil Kings. It's a Family Day matinee at Rexall Place. Game time Monday is 2:00 pm MST. The pre-game show at 1:30 on CJOC. The Canes return home Wednesday (Feb. 19) to host the Vancouver Giants and then it's back on the bus for five straight away from the ENMAX Centre. Because of the game Monday, there will be no Hurricanes This Week radio show. Our next program is February 24th. Just four more radio shows to go on CJOC before this season is in the books.

Erkamps now on the WHL site for "tbd suspension"?
ReplyDeleteWhat this, the general public and the rest of WHL league operates and can work on the stat "Family Day," but its too much to ask for the sloths from the ivory towers of the WHL office in charge of discipline to take a look at 2 seconds of game time to make a decision on this play?? - WHL - If you are going to schedule games on a stat Family Day, you need to be available to make a decision on a tbd "suspension" that affects one of your franchises key players or allow the accused to play until you drag your doughnut-eating sloth up the elevator to your second floor office!
Pathetic governance of poorly trained and maintained officials.
The ONLY suspension that should have resulted from the Erkamps hit on Padakin is to the official that made the call!
