The home town Red Deer Rebels opened the scoring in this hockey game. Nearly 14 minutes in, Lukas Sutter beat Jonny Hogue with a backhander to make it 1-0 Rebels. A few minutes later the Rebels jumped ahead by a pair of goals when Mason McCarty scored his first-ever WHL goal to make it 2-0 Rebels. That was it for Hogue who was pulled after allowing 2 goals on 6 shots. Jarrod Schamerhorn came in to play the rest. Red Deer took a 2-0 lead into the dressing room after 20 minutes of play. Lethbridge out Red Deer 12-11.
In the second, the Hurricanes chipped their way back into the game. Riley Sheen picked off a pass and then slid the puck by Patrik Bartosak to cut the Rebels lead to 2-1. Red Deer managed to get that goal back a few minutes later when Brady Gaudet ripped a point shot, beating Schamerhorn on the power play. That made it 3-1 Rebels and it stayed that way until the finial seconds of the period when Reid Nemeth took a feed from Jamal Watson and blasted a shot over the glove of Bartosak with 8.4 seconds left on the clock to make it a 3-2 lead for the Rebels after 40 minutes of play. That was Nemeth's 3rd of the season. The Rebels held a 28-26 edge in shots on goal.
In the third, the Hurricanes battled hard and came close a few times to evening up the score, but a pair of goals by Scott Feser in a span of 2:01 put this game away for Red Deer. The Rebels would skate away with 5-2 victory and their 4th win in 5 games against Lethbridge this season. It was a wide open game with plenty of chances. Red Deer out shot the Canes 44-37 in this game. The Hurricanes went 0/4 on the power play and the Rebels 1/4. The loss drops the Hurricanes overall record to 9-34-2-3 in 48 games this season.
Next Up
The Hurricanes continue on the road as they head up to northern BC. The Canes will play the Cougars in Prince George Tuesday night (Jan. 21). This will be the one and only meeting of the season between the clubs. The Hurricanes will then head to Kamloops Wednesday to play the Blazers for the final time this year and then it's off to Vancouver and Kelowna on the weekend. It'll conclude 4 games in 5 days. All games start at 8:00 MST. The pre-game shows at 7:30 on CJOC.

Sheen and Duke were very impressive most of this game. When Nemeth scored on his amazing shot high glove in the final minute of the second, I thought the Canes were going to come back in this one.
ReplyDeleteReal tough start for Hogue on the first two goals. The game was a real good one to watch despite the outcome in the third. Some very good work on the powerplay has been done by the coaches. Some nice player and puck movement, some attempt at screening, and some shots got through.... just need a few variations and some finish.
Swenson has got to pick it up. Hes getting some decent ice time and powerplay time, but is not deserving of it. I understand and sympathize that it sucks to go from Seattle to here, but make the best of it!!
Duke, Sheen, Ramsay, Estephan, Erkamps all impressive as individuals, unfortunately it is a team game where moving the puck produces the results needed to score goals and win games. Drove up to the RD game Sat, these guys just want to rush the puck and take a shot, just 3 attempted passes through the first 40 minutes? Not a single pass attempted on 4 odd man rushes into the Red Deer zone? No breakout what so ever, guys wide open and its a shot off the glass, neutral zone chips missed for icing calls? Erkamps/Sheen out for full 2 mins on PP? Its like watching Peewee hockey! No team will ever win much in this league playing that type of "system" or what ever you want to call it? LOL We even had a guy walking around the RD rink with a Canes jersey on with "Sell The Canes" written in big bold letters on the back...wow, couldn't believe it!!! Also, got talking with a guy in the stands, kinda looked like a scout? He was saying that McKechnie, Yakubowski and Pilon all share the same player agent and that this agent also has a son that had a tryout with the Canes and was cut? Wonder if there is a connection there as it seems odd that any credible NHLPA certified agent would ever advise a prospect to walk out on any team???
ReplyDeleteTurning Point Sports Management is the player agent. Carlos Sosa is one of the principals and his son Daniel had a try out with the Canes twice. He is a D man who is not that strong of a skater and did not make the team
ReplyDeleteOkay to continue, TP Sports I believe has other clients on the Canes presently. Whether or not an agents son makes to team or not has no impact on how he / she represents his or her clients. They have a fiduciary responsibility to their client. We also have to remember that the client always has the final decision all an agent can do is provide advise to their client.
DeleteI do not feel that any agent would let their personal feelings get involved. If they did they would most certainly be cutting their own throats because their clients would be gone like a jack rabbit

Does it not occur to you that the decision to shoot on odd man rushes and not to pass has been dictated by the system master? It has been another of those unfathomable practices going on all season. With predictable results.
