Canes Deal Laurencelle to Everett

The Lethbridge Hurricanes announced Sunday they have traded Forward Remi Laurencelle to the Everett Silvertips for a 6th round pick in 2014 and a conditional 6th round pick in 2015.

Laurencelle was the Hurricanes 8th round Bantam pick in 2010 and in his rookie campaign in 2012-2013 he registered 16 points (4G, 12A) and was a minus-5 plus/minus rating. In 30 games this season, the 18-year old from Winnipeg, MB had 10 points, 6 PIM’s and was a -3 plus/minus rating. The Lethbridge Hurricanes thank Remi for his contributions both on and off the ice for the past couple of seasons.

The Lethbridge Hurricanes return to action on Wednesday as they open up a four game homestand starting with Kootenay Ice at 7:00pm on January 8th. Tickets for the game are available by calling the ENMAX Centre at (403) 329-7328 or online at www.enmaxcentre.ca.

Thanks,

Pat

  1. Hopefully the medical staff in Everett can find a quick cure for Remi's gluteal bench mold that the last two coaches have cultured on him.

I am not sure how trading a bull of a forward for a sixth round draft pick helps the Lethbridge Hurricanes get through the rest of this season with their already forward-delpeted roster, but good for Remi.

    1. I am not sure that this much of a loss. In fact I think BR did quite well getting possibly two picks for Laurencelle. The effort that he put forth this year was almost non existent. Hopefully we can use the excess draft picks that will return a better player.

  2. It is not much of a secret that Laurencelle asked to be traded. I'm sure the Hurricanes brass didn't want people to know that or they wouldn't have kept listing him as injured but I had heard that so I am sure many others did as well. We want to know how long before somebody does something about the way this team has been decimated. When will the BOD address this issue with the public. Lying to us about the situation doesn't help. Let's see a little transparent accountability here.

    1. BR needs to get a deal done this week that will bring in a couple of bigger 18 year old forwards or its going to be a long second half of the season. DB keeps talking about his system? Doesn't look like much has changed...our fore check in our own zone doesn't even exist? Last two games with our goalie pulled, PA - they had two guys against five of our guys in our zone and managed to get the puck and score? Stoon - same thing, three on one behind our net and they get it out and score? Maybe the players haven't gotten his system...where I sit, doesn't look like there is one??? We need to trade for some players, not draft picks!!!

You write .our fore check in our own zone doesn't even exist.. Good, because fore checking is only done in the offensive zone , you back check in your defensive zone.
I would like to know how you would be able to trade for a couple of big 18 year old forwards , and what you would be willing to give up for them. Every team in the WHL wants these kind of players if they can play the game.
I'm happy you're not managing the team .

  6. HAHAHAHA! a bull of a forward!!! Oh God, that was good. Thanks, Tradesaurus, you rock.

And maybe, just maybe, he was a bad pick? He showed none of the ability that Canes brass said he had when they drafted him.

  7. Finally there is posts on here that make sense. Of all the forwards on this team there are only a couple that might be good enough to play top 1 or 2 lines on the top whl teams. Those of you that think they are all superstars better take off the rose color glasses. Hearing the GM say we need to get bigger is actually funny since he was the head scout that drafted all of these kids. The problem this team has is who can you trade that is worth anything. Maybe Duke but what do you get back another Merkley for Derko. Hope not that since Merkley and Duke with Sheen on a line may have looked good. Now for the whole systems talk. Our defense is too small and not overly skilled with the puck, forwards are to small to control the boards so who are the "d" supposed to pass to. I am sure the system is look for an outlet pass and if you do not see one get the puck out. Sorry to say this but it will be a few years before we see any playoff hockey here, even if the team is sold. KAOS

    1. Is Axel a top two line player now? 20 points in 18 and a plus 13 on a top team in the W. Apparently we traded him because he is third line player for us. We gave him away. Lowry must be a good coach?

I do agree with you that we will not make the playoffs for a couple seasons. To date, three requested trades and were sent home, two retired and one committed to US College. Problem is if we do get high end talent in the system they may not want to play here due to the issues on this team.

Would have been interesting to see our record if we had a Don Hay caliber coach at the beginning of the season. We would have had trades but no way all the players would have bolted. We probably would have landed Phelps as well.

    2. Axel was traded because he floated since he returned from the Jets camp with a signed contract. Yes the trade did benefit him in that he got the message that he needs to work and produce. I am also sure that the Jets management may have talked to him as well. If you remember when the Royals played here he sat on the bench for the third and part of the second and admitted on Pat's show that he did not play a good game.

Yes some have requested trades and were traded. How are they doing now. I am sure that Seattle is real happy with two of the players that they traded for. They got a whole five goals out of them. Don Hay has also had players bolt on him the latest being Blake Orban. To assume that a Don Hay calibre coach would have landed Phelps is presumptuous on your part. You do not know what his parents were thinking with respect to schooling, living away from home etc. One lad returned home to go to school, his own decision. Topping as well retired to return to University to become a teacher. Both of these young adults made logical and responsible decisions on their own and should be commended.

While I respect Don Hay as a coach and his record you can not even begin to think what his record would be with the team that we started the season with.

Yes we are in next year country with respect to playoffs. This has nothing to do with the present coaches . I feel that we are just beginning to see the effect of the four year laissez-faire attitude of the previous GM and coaches. This will probably take a period of time to turn this ship around. Those of you that think there is a short term fix are dreaming in technicolour. More trades are coming.

    3. Didn’t Preston have 28 wins last season with basically the same roster? I said Don Hay caliber coach (someone with a lot of W experience and success). However, I believe Don Hay is a much better coach than Preston. If Preston can get 28 wins, I believe Don would get more.

Seattle is going to the playoffs and all three of our previous players have worn the A for that playoff bound team. How? Their bad attitudes? What role is Sam and Yak asked to play? I think the coach had some high praise for those players and what they are asked to do.

I always believed a good coach can utilize players for roles that suit them most. Good coaches also get the most out of all types of players. Too bad this staff couldn’t get Axel to do more than just float?
You don’t think it is coaching, I do.

    4. preston had a good half of the year last season and you can thank rimmer for that..the second part of last season was the same disaster as the years before..yak/sam are third line shut down in seattle, i'm not knocking them just saying the canes talent/development aint there...that you can thank preston for, he killed 5 years of rebuild and bad drafting..bob

  8. The only guy with value (that wont return next year) is Nick Walters. He is going to the AHL in the Fall, and probably even this Spring the day after his WHL career ends... lets see what BR can get for him? Maybe a couple 2nd round picks?

  9. Lets not downplay the biggest story of the week...

The step-son of a well-respected WHL coach gave his son the green light to sign/play with the Canes... maybe that shows all you know-it-alls that the franchise isn't crumbling...

  10. Blame, blame, blame. That's the name of the game. Or Sarcasm 101.
Brad Robson is to blame for the draft choices under the leadership (or lack there of) of Rich Preston ...former General Manager and Head Coach. I was under the impression that the final say on any draft picks (especially early rounds) was done by the GM and in this case the Head Coach who wanted a certain type of player. Were they always in agreement? Who knows but those two. But when it came to a previous trade, I know for a fact that our current GM was unhappy with dealing Merkley.
I agree with AVFA that Blomquist was a bust with this hockey club after coming back with the Jets. (ill-spent money)
One thing I would conclude is that Brad and Drake are on the same page as what to draft for and try and get in trades. Size with speed, skill and toughness.

  12. For myself, I think the biggest issue today is that the players don't want to be here. It is one thing to have a player or even two want to be traded or opt to retire early in any given season but what is going on here is outright mutiny. I don't for a minute believe that these were all lazy players because one would have to assume the teams they have gone to are no slouches when it comes to hard word ethics. They didn't flee from hard work so what are they leaving for? Why doesn't anyone seem too concerned about this? I for one am worried that we will no longer have a team because the current GM and HC are not listening. How many players have to leave before they start hearing what is being said? It truly doesn't matter what we think of Preston as a coach, Robson as a GM or that little blond kid as a stick boy. What matters is the players are trying to tell us something and no one is hearing them. But who the hell cares enough to start listening?

  13. If BR doesn't make a significant trade and get some guys in here that want to play, it will be difficult to sign any drafted players coming up? Is the snow ball already rolling, if so, they need to stop it somehow! I hope Mr. Sheen isn't one of those guys....

  15. If the players are trying to tell you something, they should choose to say it during one of the many times they are contacted about such things by the local media. We ask them, we chase them down after they quit and still they say absolutely nothing. If there's 'more to the story' one of these kids should nut up and talk. They aren't all kids, at 18, 19, 20, one of these kids should have the guts to come out and actually talk about what they see as injustice. I'd certainly support them and protect them if they decided to speak.

    1. Of course the same goes if there is no story right Dylan? If these boys are simply tired of losing and ready to move on in life? You would be the first to step up and write that story as well wouldn't you? And what exactly are you protecting these guys from? There's nothing better to sell papers than a good old conspiracy theory. Give me a break.

    2. @ Dylan,

Really? "Nut up and talk..." This is your expectation? Personally, the "local media" is the last place I would choose to vent frustrations of MY job.

Would you if you were in their shoes?- Would you in YOUR own shoes?- i.e. If after considerable daily frustration and deliberation, you decided to leave the newspaper because you believed that the owner, the editor, the managers, and the majority of your coworkers were either unskilled, incompetent, or just lazy or lousy people, BUT you still wanted to get a job elsewhere in the business after you left... Would you declare their shortcomings to the world through the media (including potential employers to hear), or might you just quietly move on with the hopes of finding a better organization?

These boys owe Lethbridge residents nothing; - Your best bet is to question the billets after the players leave, and then be real careful about how you reveal what you learn.

It takes a lot of time and sacrifice to get up on a soap box, and life is short, so one really has to pick the important boxes to mount.

As much as I would love to hear the truth from the several players that have left this year and in years prior because it probably would help the organization purge itself of some problems,... I certainly can appreciate why the players don't elaborate. - Be realistic. You can't protect them from anything. You should know this since they obviously have this figured out (at half your age). - Richie.

    3. Well yes.... But the question remains. Why are they losing? And who is accountable for this collapse that hovered around for the last 4 years and then descended like a hail storm this season? Dylan and other media followers of the team were predicting top 5 or even better results as the season opened. Are they that bad at what they do? Apparently. But they got crossed up by a new management and coaching staff that was worse than anyone could have predicted.

Sure a certain number of players will realize as time goes on that their future does not lie in hockey and they will move on to other things. And even the odd player will see that his future is limited where he is and want to move to a better a situation. But the turnover here is way beyond the ordinary. There was a bit of this under Preston - Merckley for example. But under this new regime it's the norm. For whatever reason the coaching staff of this hockey team has not found a way to make the most of the talent at hand. Some might argue they haven't really tried to do that. They have tried to honor their system to the exclusion of their players. We went from a pond hockey coach whose mantra was always "try harder" and we will win, to a systems focused coach whose mantra is "follow my system" and we will win. There has been a lot of ballyhoo about players being unable or unwilling to adopt to this system, but the hard fact seems to be that the system is unsuited to the league, the team, to hockey, to life and certainly to winning. So losing prevails and kids, who are held as secondary to the system in every way anyway, get discouraged and ... floggings continue in the hopes that morale will improve. And it doesn't.

To swing so violently from one flawed coaching style to the opposite flawed coaching style is pretty interesting. We went from boys running around trying to create opportunities to boys standing around trying to avoid them. Frankly, the former was easier to watch.

And how about that brilliant system of openingly shaming good players by sending them home and then trying to trade them for someone of better value? If that didn't show you that these guys are absolutely unsuited to manage and coach a hockey team you weren't paying attention. I have noticed they softened that approach after their mentor was called in. But the damage was done. And it probably had a lot to do with kids not wanting to hang around here, although that level of disrespect has to pervade every aspect of a coach/player relationship. The kids understand that their aspirations, talents, concerns, fears, hopes and dreams don't matter to these men.

      Red Line

And we see that Axel the floater here is Axel the top line guy, point a game guy in Victoria. Henry, Yak and Sam have found important roles in Seattle. The latter two are doing exactly what they were accused here of being unable to do, adopting to a different system. They switched from offensive players to defensive specialists very successfully.

    4. Good managers and coaches have the ability to assess their players, strengths and weaknesses, and actually finding chemistry among their groups and yes their may be the odd one that maybe just does not fit in? Any given system does not work for everyone right off the bat, that is when coaches have to become teachers and I am just not sure if DB is a strong teacher because better results should have be realized by this point in the season! The other point is that yes, this team has won the odd game here lately and to me, those few wins have come when they have simple been the harder working team and it would be extremely difficult for anyone to say that these wins have come from any type of superior system or execution of same. There really is no set breakout other than chip off the glass or a hard pass to someone on the red line for a deflection and then chase it down? Many of the passes arr missed which result in icing calls? I have watched very carefully the last 20 games or so and nothing has really changed with the way this team executes? Yet after these wins, DB says the the players did a good job of making his system work? LOL I always ask myself, why is there no one in the Lethbridge media circle that is willing to put DB on the spot and ask him to explain his system and how it is supposed to work? The real issue seems to be a lack of accountability, who are these coaches accountable to? Seems that every other organization has an hierarchy where at some point the path of expectation crosses the path of result, that doesn't seem to happen here, why is that? Every successful company or organization that i know of has goals set, short, medium and long because that is how they measure success...what are the goals for this franchise? What was the goal for the first half of this season? Did we meet it, where did we fall short what adjustments are we making to reach the second had goals? Who is monitoring all of this? Why is the media so scared to ask the hard questions? Everyone has to be part of this team right from the people that sweep the stands to the 80 yr/old season ticket holder that has supported this team for 30 or so years! Rome was not built in a day, this rebuild is going to take time and the only way it works is if everyone buys in and holds each other accountable...GAME ON
