Oil Kings Beat Hurricanes 2-1 in Lethbridge

LETHBRIDGE  - Corbin Boes put on a goaltending show, but two third period goals lifted the Edmonton Oil Kings to a 2-1 victory at the ENMAX Centre Friday night.

After a bit of delay because of the national TV broadcast on Sportsnet, the Hurricanes and Oil Kings would get down to business. Edmonton would carry the majority of the play in the opening 20 minutes of play. The Canes had their hands full, but Corbin Boes was very good between the pipes for Lethbridge, keeping the Oil Kings off the score board. Neither team was able to score in the first period. Edmonton though heavily out shot Lethbridge 16-2.

In the second, the Corbin Boes goaltending show would continue. The Oil Kings continued to pound pucks at the Lethbridge goal, but Boes was perfect once again. Edmonton everything in the second period of this game but score. The Oil Kings continued to dominate in the the Canes zone, but just like the first period the game would stay scoreless through 40 minutes of play. Edmonton held a huge 34-6 edge in shots on goal.

In the third, the scoreless tie would finally be broken. The Hurricanes, on the power play would open the scoring when Riley Sheen notched his 5th goal of the season. That made it 1-0 Lethbridge. A few minutes later Edmonton would get the equalizer, when Mitch Moroz cashed in a rebound off a great stop from Boes. That tied things at 1-1. Not too long after that, the Oil Kings would get the go-ahead goal when Curtis Lazar scored to give the visitors a 2-1 lead late in the period. The Canes pulled the goaltender to try and get the tying goal, but unfortunately it wasn't meant to be for Lethbridge as Edmonton would hold on for a 2-1 victory. The Hurricanes see their record fall to 3-21-2-2 on the season. The Canes have just one victory in their last 16 games. Lethbridge's penalty kill was good, as Edmonton went 0/5 on the power play. The Canes finished the night 1/5.

  1. Really enjoyed the game tonight despite the home team being dominated. It was exciting just to see if the boys could hold on somehow.... Of course the officials made sure they would have a few extra hurdles to jump for success. The Canes were SO disciplined in this game despite being on the receiving end of a lot of rough play by the Oil Kings that went uncalled.

Carter Folk was a MONSTER in this game, and he was NOT offside on his two on one rush with Duke. I booed the call in the arena as I was pretty sure it was the wrong one, and the game recording confirmed the entry was NOT offside. It wasn't even that close. Really a bad decision made (late) by the linesman. Duke can't catch a break! Pucks in the face, then he gets a chance like that and the incompetent linesmen unfairly took away a chance that could have changed the outcome of this game.

The Walters roughing penalty should not have been called. The Oil King player had NO business proceeding with that kind of speed and aggression to the net that long after the whistle. The Roughing should have been offset with an unsportsmanlike against the Oil Kings. Especially at that point in a tie game. Really a bad decision by the official to put the Canes down a man for that. Walters had not yet left the box before the Oil Kings took the lead on this "powerplay."

Nice 2nd intermission interview by Captain Derko. Boes probably played his best game of the year, and the Canes had a LOT of puck luck as the Oil Kings missed the net on several attempts from the slot.

Great effort by all. It was AWESOME to see Samuelson get drilled by Folk on one of his many crushing hits in this game. I could not believe there were no fights for this game that was televised!

  2. Love the bone crushing hits by the Canes. They certainly have gotten tougher. Now they need to find more ways to get to the oppositions net.

  3. Correction- To paragraph #3 of my post from 00:13 above:

The goal scored at 13:47 of the 3rd period by the Oil Kings coming during Walters "Roughing" penalty from 11:47 of the 3rd was to TIE the game (not to take the lead)... and generate all the extra momentum they needed to score the eventual game-winner even strength at 16:02 (Sorry... Bad Rantus).... Same point, however, being that in my opinion, it was the wrong decision by the official to award a powerplay to reward the Oil Kings player who made a decision to continue his high speed rush at Boes long after the shot, when the puck was clearly frozen, and AFTER the whistle, knowing that the defender would protect his tender... It was unsportsmanlike and should have been called as such.

Interested to see whether the Sunday game this weekend will follow the same pattern as both the Sept 29th game and this one (ie. Get drastically outshot 2:1 or 3:1 and out chanced 5:1, but hope for Boes-Best AND another 3 goals in 0:42 to steal a win. Maybe we missed Maxwell's and Mckechnie's relentless puck pursuit in this most recent one.

  4. I got the feeling Moroz wanted to fight, but he wanted to fight someone he knew he could beat up.........not Folk or Derko! I thought he was always taking liberties with Cane players when he knew they weren't on the ice. The penalty on Derko for his hit on Samuelsson was a joke. In fact, the referring didn't put the WHL in a very good light. As Rantus pointed out many blown calls.

    1. Somebody reported on the Canes Web Site the Buzz that they saw Russ wearing "a boot cast thing". Do not know the accuracy of the information just what I read. If it is true and Russ is wearing a boot cast this is not good news for the Canes. He has been playing well!
