The Lethbridge Hurricanes announced Monday Josh Derko has been invited to the San Jose Sharks Rookie Training Camp.
Derko, who recently signed an Amateur Tryout Agreement (ATO), will be
with San Jose as they compete in the “Young Stars Classic,” a
round-robin rookie tournament hosted by the Vancouver Canucks featuring
prospects from the Sharks, Canucks, Calgary Flames, Edmonton Oilers and
Winnipeg Jets from September 5th to 9th in Penticton, BC.
The 20-year old from Sherwood Park, AB played his entire WHL career
with Swift Current before coming to the Hurricanes at the trade
deadline. In his 22 games with Lethbridge last season, Derko put up 9
points (5G, 4A) and 51 PIM’s.
Two other Hurricanes will also be leaving for pro camps this week. Last month the team announced Axel Blomqvist and Adam Henry
were also getting NHL tryouts. Blomqvist signed an ATO with the
Winnipeg Jets and was invited to their camp where he’ll also now compete
against Derko and the Sharks at the “Young Stars Classic.”
Henry was invited to the Chicago Blackhawks prospect camp ahead of
the NHL Draft and earned another tryout this week. Henry and the
Blackhawks will compete in a tournament (September 5th – 8th)
in London, ON that will see the Blackhawks rookie squad face-off
against rookies from the Toronto Maple Leafs, Pittsburgh Penguins and
Ottawa Senators.
