Hurricanes Beat Oil Kings 5-3 For First Win

EDMONTON - The Lethbridge Hurricanes exploded for three goals in less than a minute in the third period to power to a 5-3 win against the Oil Kings Sunday.

For the first time this season the Lethbridge Hurricanes would open the scoring in a hockey game. Jamal Watson cashed in his 2nd of the year off a rebound in front of Edmonton goalie Tristan Jarry to give Lethbridge a 1-0 lead at Rexall Place. The Oil Kings kept peppering Hurricanes netminder Corbin Boes with shots, but he was stellar between the pipes in the opening 20 minutes of this game. The Canes would take the 1-0 lead into the dressing room. Edmonton heavily out shot the Canes 20-7.

In the second, the Oil Kings would keep pressing and finally found a way to beat Corbin Boes. Mitch Moroz took a feed from Henrik Samuelsson and put the shot upstairs to even the game at 1-1. A few minutes later the Oil Kings jumped into the lead with a power play goal. Brett Pollock found the back of the goal, giving Edmonton a 2-1 lead. The Oil Kings held the edge in shots on goal 37-13 through two periods.

In the third, the Hurricanes exploded with 3 goals in a span of just 42 seconds to open the period. Tyler Wong tied the game for Lethbridge with his 2nd goal of the year. Then right off the face-off at centre ice the Canes would take the lead when Brady Ramsay scored his 1st of the year, firing a screen shot by Jarry. Seconds later, Lethbridge would take a two goal lead when Axel Blomqvist knocked the puck past Tristan Jarry to give the Hurricanes a 4-2 lead. Edmonton got one of those back when Mitch Moroz scored his second of the night to cut the Lethbridge lead to 4-3, but the Canes would get an empty netter from Russ Maxwell to seal the deal and they would skate away with their first win of the season, 5-3.

Corbin Boes was the game's first star, as Edmonton out shot Lethbridge 42-21. He was great and looked to be in mid-season form this weekend. The Canes went 0/7 on the power play. Edmonton was 1/4. The win improves the Canes early season record to 1-2-0-1. The Canes vets really came to play in the third period. That, along with Boes performance in goal was the difference in this one.

Hurricanes This Week

Our third program of this WHL season airs Monday night at 7:00 MDt on CJOC. Joining Fred and I in-studio will be Head Coach Drake Berehowsky. Drake will be on the show for the entire hour. Any questions for the coach can be sent to me via Twitter @radiopat258. Drake has a good job in my opinion of being the face of the hockey club and has always been more than willing to conduct interviews. It'll be a good chance Monday to speak with him in an open one hour chat and an opportunity for fans to hear him talk about this team and his expectations.

Next Up

The Hurricanes are back home now for their next three game before heading out to the B.C. coast for a week-long trip around Thansgiving. The Canes will play host to the visiting Calgary Hitmen on Wednesday (Oct. 2) at the ENMAX Centre. The club will have Friday off and then get back into action Saturday (Oct. 5) when the entertain a team from outside the Central Division for the first time this season. The Seattle Thunderbirds will provide the opposition for the Canes that night.

Thanks,
Pat

  1. Great win. Keep working on the 60 minutes, sounds like we had a 35 min game? Glad we’ve had the third in the last two. It’s time for Yakubowski to start his point streak.

  2. Great job by Boes to give the Canes a chance until Wongs' alarm clock went off to wake the team up.

Henrik Samuelsson is such a (talented player and) dirty playing coward.

He maliciously spears and hacks and hits from behind in EVERY game that I have even seen him play in.

Blind-siding Blomqvist accidentally on purpose with his shoulder/elbow in the neutral zone is yet another example of why he shouldn't be allowed to play in this league.

Next time we play Edmonton, EVERY Cane needs to HIT that coward EVERY time he touches the puck. The Canes played him tonight like it was one of their sisters. Gotta bully the bullies back.

  3. The Hurricanes played a great final 25 minutes. Luckily it only took that 25 minutes to win this game. It would appear things are slowly coming together for this team. It was also nice to see Ramsay and even Maxwell finally get their first goals behind them. I hope the other vets are not far behind them. Keep pushing forward lads.

  4. i read Pat's blog above and just finished reading the Edmonton Sun's report on the game. Were both of you at the same game! The Sun reports that the Canes only won because they played for 42 seconds and even then it was the Oil Kings giving the game away.

    Interesting perspectives about the game.

  5. As they say Observer, there are always three sides to every story. I think I like this version the best though.

  6. Pat,

Any news about the health status of Axel Blomqvist from the blind side hit/elbow by Henrik-I'll-hit-you-from-behind-everytime-Samuelsson?

Do you know whether the Canes asked the league to take a look at the hit for suspension consideration?

  7. Observer.......I'd suggest that the Canes were lucky that Oil Kings' goalie Jarry was obviously not sharp. However, 2pts for a win and hopefully, the team starts playing 60 minutes, especially the veterans who are still trying to shake the "Preston Blues" of not skating hard for 60 minutes and sacrificing on every shift.
