Hurricanes Shut Out 4-0 by Red Deer Rebels

LETHBRIDGE - Turner Elson scored twice as the Red Deer Rebels shut out the Lethbridge Hurricanes for the second straight game, this time 4-0.

A typical Lethbridge/Red Deer game this year usually begins with little to no offence and that was exactly the case in the first period of the 5th meeting of the season between the two Central Division teams.  Neither team was able to light the red lamp as both Ty Rimmer and Patrik Bartosak managed to keep the game scoreless through 20 minutes play.  It was a very evenly played game with the shots 9-9.

In the second, Captain Graham Hood, playing in his 300th career WHL game was given a 5 minute major penalty and game misconduct for boarding on Red Deer's Devan Fafard.  On the power play, the Rebels would take the lead.  A slap pass from the Lethbridge blue line was tipped perfectly by Turner Elson, to break the scoreless tie and give the Rebels a 1-0 lead.  The Rebels would add another when the Canes got caught while on the power play behind their own goal and the Rebels would make them pay when Turner Elson scored his second of the night to make it 2-0 Rebels.  Before the end of the period, the visitors would score again.  Wyatt Johnson's hard shot from just inside the right face-off circle beat Ty Rimmer between the legs to give Red Deer a 3-0 lead after 40 minutes of play.  The Canes though out shot the Rebels 28-21.

In the third, the Rebels would get one more when Matt Dumba scored on a late power play to give the Rebels a 4-0 lead and that would be it.  For the second time in the last two weeks, the Rebels would shut out the Hurricanes in Lethbridge. Despite the loss, the Canes out shot Red Deer 39-28.  Lethbridge went 0/6 on the power play, while the Rebels went 2/4.

The Hurricanes haven't scored a single goal in their last 3 home games, getting shut out twice by Red Deer and once by  the Kootenay ICE.  The last time Lethbridge scored at the ENMAX Centre was a goal by Jaimen Yakubowski at the 19:14 mark of the 3rd period in a 5-4 loss to Prince George back on February 16th. The loss drops the Hurricanes record to 26-30-3-7 on the season.  They remain 6 points back of Kootenay for the final playoff spot in the East with 6 games remaining in the regular season schedule.
