Hurricanes Blanked 3-0 by ICE in Cranbrook

CRANBROOK, BC - The Kootenay ICE scored once shorthanded and once on the power play as they shut out the Lethbridge Hurricanes 3-0 Saturday night.

Not much to talk about in the first period of this hockey game.  The Hurricanes and ICE played to a scoreless tie through 20 minutes.  Both teams had some chances, but neither Ty Rimmer or Mackenzie Skapski would break.  Kootenay held an 11-5 edge in shots.

In the second, the Hurricanes power play would give up a shorthanded goal.  Levi Cable picked off a pass and snapped a shot over Ty Rimmer, giving the ICE a 1-0 lead.  About four minutes later, Kootenay would get another one, this time on the man advantage.  Joey Leach's point shot beat Rimmer, to give the home team a 2-0 lead after two periods of play.  The ICE out shot Lethbridge 20-13 through 40 minutes.

In the third, the Hurricanes played much better, but again just couldn't score.  The ICE would finish the game off with an empty-netter off the stick of Brock Montgomery and that would be it as Kootenay would blank the Canes 3-0.  The loss drops the Hurricanes to 24-23-1-7 on the season.  They also fall to 6th place in the Eastern Conference, one point back of Saskatoon and one point ahead of the 7th place Swift Current Broncos. The Hurricanes power play let them down big time in this game.  They went 0/6 and gave up a shorthanded goal while the ICE went 2/3 on the man advantage.  Kootenay out shot Lethbridge 29-22.  Assistant Coach Chris Chisamore said on the post-game show it was very frustrating to watch.

  2. what happened after the game in Kootenay with Rich Preston and a fan going at it. Fans were standin at there seats and the building was half empty and both coaches came back out and went at it. I could see and hear the yelling from across the rink.

Is this how they treat bench hecklers when they lose?

  3. Poor effort by half the team...hows can you just turn off and on how you play? I see Hood didnt play much in the third...did he get hurt? All I can say is the boys best be on their A game for the next four games and beyond....

  4. This pattern is becoming all to familiar.....Win one with a great team effort, lose one with a horrible team effort-coach goes ballistic.

    Time for a change!!!!!!

  5. Does this team have a rule that they only can win one game in a row. Why did the waste the desiel fuel for the bus trp to Cranbrook.

  6. This whole season as well as the past few have just been a joke. I keep hearing about the young high end talent on this team, but I for one sure have not seen it other than Pilon and maybe Duke. I used to think Stasiuk was a terrible GM until we got RP. From 2000 until 2009 we had at least 1 nhl drafted player on the team and we have had 1 since and that was Sutter in the 7 round as a 19 year old. For me the worst part is watching these coaches destroy these young mens dreams. IT IS TIME FOR THE BOARD TO STEP UP AND ADMIT THEY SCREWED UP AND FIRE THESE COACHES. If not now at least at the end of the season. Someone said in an earlier comment about how Preston develops these young forwards to be good defensively and that Merkley never bought in so why the heck does Axel play. Duke is getting treated the same way Jay did and will probably find the same fate next year. Merkley was a +1 when he got traded. This team will go broke if they continue down this path and as I have said before the board can only blame themselves. AJ

  7. Wow, sounds like a pretty poor effort (didn't see/hear the game so can't comment on the details). But it was disappointing to wake up and see the final score after such a nice effort at home Friday night.

Apparently there were some extra "circulars" after the game between Preston and Ice fans, Preston and Ice coach?? Anyone know the details yet? Doesn't sound/look good for our coach.

I'll agree it's disappointing to have such a weak offensive outcome, but hopefully, they will change that in the next game.

  8. Just a thought .... Maybe if RP would stay focused on his team during the game, making adjustments and motivating players when they re struggling instead of wasting his energy fighting with the refs, fans and other coaches, the team would have a more favorable outcome. When there's a bad call he can't seem to voice his opinion and move on. The players are expected to be disciplined on the ice should he not be expected to be disciplined on the bench. It seems to be happening more and more often and it's getting old, and a bit embarrassing.

  10. Completely agree with comments at 1:19 and 6:56.....many fans have had same thoughts for a long time.....Yes, JBL it is time for a change, big time. Things have deteriorated to a point of embarrassment for the team.
For the sake of the players, make a change so they can play using thier skills, so they can learn and develop, so they have a chance to win games.

  11. JBL I agree. Time for the axe to drop and the axel to drop. He's soft and brutal. Fine put Derko up with Maxwell but for heck's sake give Maxwell someone to play with. Put Duke up there or see him go the way of Merkley. Wasted talent again. Rich, your PP is embarrassing. Get the hint already.

  12. I know what you're saying guys, but I honestly don't think the Board will fire RP and his staff at this point. They're still in a playoff spot, but more to the point, they gave him an extension of 2 (or was it 3?) years. I just don't see them making a move at this point for those reasons, (but especially the second reason).

  13. That playoff spot is in serious jeopardy. They have to take at least 5pts from this current road trip, then sit back and play the waiting game with only 1 game in 12 days before heading west. Then the last 4 games in 5 days to close out the season. The only thing that will save them is consistent play. Not this win one lose one play. As for Preston's contract, he has the rest of this season and next. However, if the team falters over their last 17 games and does not make the playoffs, the board will have no choice but to let them all go. The question of how they pay him off will be the only road block.

    Time is running out!

  14. Any word on what transpired at the mid season shareholders meeting. Dearth of info, radio, paper, tv, web sites, nada.

  15. You will probably have to email them to get any info. They don't send anything out until months after it's happened.

  16. As a shareholder, I was there. The meeting was fairly low-keyed. The shareholders that showed up did not ask a lot of questions about the finances or the performance of the team. But they were given straight answers, nothing hidden. The big issue that came up was not with the Hurricanes, but with the complete lack of co-operation/partnership (my words) coming from the city in regards to negotiating a "fair" deal with the Canes. McNaughton stressed that the club is not looking for a "handout" but a fair deal that includes being paid for the 288 tickets they have to dish out for each game to the suites.

  17. Preston is not going anywhere this year, playoffs or not. If the Canes fail to make the playoffs this year,or get swept in 4 games the board has to suck it up, eat RP'S contract and eject his a$$ outta here.
People ask whether the club can afford to fire him. I ask, can they afford not to give him and M.K. their walking papers if the results are poor for a 4th straight year?

  18. Thanks JBL. The only problem with this line of a fair deal is that the contract negotiations with city were commenced in Nov of 2010 or 11. They are working on a contract from I believe 06 with 1 year extensions. The board can howl all it wants but they should get off their butt and get a new contract with the city. amen
