Oil Kings Blank Hurricanes For 3rd Time This Season

EDMONTON - Tristan Jarry had a fairly easy night in goal as the Edmonton Oil Kings shut out the Lethbridge Hurricanes 4-0 Friday night.

Not the best road period by the Hurricanes with several turnovers to open this game at Rexall Place.  Neither team was able to score until the final minutes when Mitch Moroz redirected a point shot, beating a partially screened Ty Rimmer.  That made it 1-0 Edmonton through 20 minutes of play.  The Canes didn't have many scoring chances in the period as the Oil Kings held an edge in shots 17-7.

In the second, the Oil Kings scored early.  Just 42 second into the period, Curtis Lazar backhanded a shot by Rimmer giving Edmonton a 2-0 lead.  The Oil Kings would add one more before the end of the period when Trevor Cheek rifled a one-timer by Ty Rimmer making it 3-0 Edmonton.  That's the way the period would end.  Edmonton held a comfortable edge in shots 32-14. The Hurricanes just couldn't generate any scoring chances.

In the third, the Oil Kings would add one more goal on a bad giveaway by the Canes in their own zone when Dylan Wruck snapped a wrist shot by Rimmer to make it 4-0 Edmonton and that would be the final score in this game.  Edmonton out shot Lethbridge 46-23 on the night.  The Oil Kings went 0/3 on the power play while the Canes finished the night 0/2.
The loss drops the Canes record to 21-19-1-5 on the season.  Assistant Coach Chris Chisamore said on the CJOC post game show, "We were bad tonight.  Way too many turnovers.  Not a good game on the road."

HURRICANES VS. COPS HOCKEY GAME

Members of the Lethbridge Regional Police Service and Lethbridge Hurricanes are lacing up their skates for a free exhibition game this weekend. The Cops and Canes game will feature mixed teams that include a combination of police officers and Hurricanes players. The game is set for Sunday, Jan. 13 at 2:30 p.m. at the Enmax Centre and is open to the public. Doors open at 2:00pm and admission is a non-perishable food item. All donated food will benefit local food banks. On the ice the teams will be battling for bragging rights and a special trophy, but off the ice Cops and Canes is an opportunity for the young players to connect with law enforcement officers and learn more about a career in policing.  Members of the Police Service and Hurricanes will be available for media interviews at the game.

NEXT UP

The Hurricanes will play game two of this trip away from Lethbridge on Saturday (Jan. 12) when they head to Medicine Hat to take on the rival Tigers.  this will be the 6th of 8 meetings between the Canes and Tigers this season.  Game time from Medicine Hat is 7:30 pm MST.  The pre-game show on CJOC at 6:30.

Thanks,
Pat

  1. REALLY liked to hear how Simpson stood up for his new teammate after Rimmer got run over by Lowe! I doubt he'll try that garbage the next time these teams play! After hearing the fight call, I want Simpson in the lineup at ALL TIMES! You might be over 6 feet Mr. Lowe, but you obviously need to pick your opponents more carefully!

  2. I would rather win the game then the fight. Who cares about that. We sucked and got are butts kicked. No offence and our defence was terrible. We are not even close to the Oil Kings and are less skilled than we were a week ago. There's alway WWF if thats what your looking for. By the way if it wasn't for the Vancouver goaltender letting in 4 of the first 9 shots we would of lost that one to. Where is this team going? If this thing blows up Robson and RP have to be accountable.

  3. Darren. I watched the fight on Hockeyfights.com and at best it was a draw or Lowe may have even won the fight by just a bit.

  4. Canes get shut out and Merkley gets the winning goal plus an assist for Swift Current. Maybe the Canes could have used Jay last night. Oh wait, he would not have got on the ice enough to get 2 points if he still played for the Canes.

  5. Anon 12:22......I didn't see anything else to comment on. "The fight" (fighting is allowed in hockey in case you weren't aware), was the only positive note I could see.

I don't see why you're freaking out at this point. I mentioned in a previous comment after the Derko trade, that I wasn't going to micro-manage the team after 1 win or 1 loss....give it some time. I want to see what they're like with Derko in the lineup.

Anon 12:37.....I guess Pat's call made it sound a bit more in Simpson's favour (no disrespect meant Pat!). It just sounded like Lowe was cut and Simpson finished the fight off with successive right hands. My bad.

ps. It's apparent that Merkley's going to get the ice time in Swift he wasn't getting here. Let's not continue down that road....what's done is done. I'm trying to look forward.

  6. Agreed. It is what it is. This is a good team and the talent is here. End of the season will be the time to reflect on things. Its RP's show and he needs the chance to see this thing through! Go Canes go!

  7. Anon at 1:28 I can see how Pat's call may have seemed like Simpson won. Like I said it was a really close fight and a ton of haymakers were being chucked so I am sure Pat sounded super excited. I would have been to. If you watch the fight, I don't think I have seen that many good punches thrown with so few landing in a long time. Here is a link.
