Hurricanes Yakubowski Named WHL Player of the Week

The Western Hockey League announced today that Lethbridge Hurricanes’ Forward Jaimen Yakubowski is the Denny’s WHL Player of the Week.

Yakubowski collected eight points, scoring five goals and three assists to go with a +2 rating, in four games over the past week.

On Tuesday, November 27, the Hurricanes were in Saskatoon to face the Blades. Yakubowski scored one goal, one assist and was named the game’s 2nd Star in the ‘Canes 5-3 loss to the Blades. The next night, Wednesday, November 28, the Prince Albert Raiders welcomed the Hurricanes to the Art Hauser Centre. Yakubowski gathered two goals, two assists and was named the game’s 1st Star in the Hurricanes 6-4 victory over the Raiders. Following a 2-1 shoot-out loss on Saturday, December 1 in Medicine Hat, the ‘Canes were in Edmonton on Sunday, December 2, to take on the WHL defending Champion Oil Kings. Yakubowski netted two goals and was named the game’s 2nd Star, but the Oil Kings proved to be too much as they edged the Canes 4-3.

Yakubowski currently sits 2nd in Hurricanes team scoring with 23 points (13 goals, 10 assists) in 32 games played thus far this season. In his rookie campaign with the Hurricanes last season, he registered 28 points (16G, 12A) in 68 games. The Hurricanes currently sit 3rd in the WHL Central Division with a 14-14-1-3 record for 32 points.

An 18 year old from Dalmeny, SK, Yakubowski is in his second full season with the Lethbridge Hurricanes. The ‘Canes selected Yakubowski in the 4th round in the 2009 WHL Draft and has since appeared in 100 games gathering 51 points (29 goals, 22 assists) and 187 PIM’s.

  1. What a GREAT week for JY, and though he knows he is not going to perform like that EVERY week,... now he KNOWS he can, so he probably will again... hopefully soon! He has been working hard, and he got to spend some quality time on the PP, and time with 7-11, which never hurts a skilled player's point totals! 7-11 is ALWAYS open for business! - Richie.

  2. Congrats to the Yak Attack! He certainly deserves it, hard-nosed player who comes to play each and every night. As I have said previously, he could be wearing a letter now, but will be wearing a letter next season.

Ok, for the benefit of a local prognosticator who has passion for the $6 bag of burnt popcorn at the Enmax, I will rephrase my comment about adding a big, fast skating forward who can put the puck in the net, in the 18-19 age. Actually that should be in the 19 age, as like the Global Master, I believe we have a shortage of potential overages next year. Blomquist will likely not be back, Soffilas is a question mark, which leaves Ramsay as the only bonifide overage for next season.

I could not help but notice that the boys of the media round table got a bit testy over the Portland issue. Poor Pat was struggling to keep order.

    Fun to listen to though.

  3. Jaks is on fire!! I'll admit, I never saw this coming! (But good for him and the team!)
