Regina Pats Blank Hurricanes 4-0

REGINA, SK. - Dyson Stevenson scored three times as the Regina Pats beat the Lethbridge Hurricanes 4-0 Saturday night at the Brandt Centre.

The Lethbridge Hurricanes didn't get off to the hot start they had hoped for in this game. Neither team was able to find the back of the net in the opening 20 minutes.  It was a lack-luster first period.  Regina out shot Lethbridge 8-4.

In the second, the Pats would break the scoreless tie and blow the game open with three straight goals.  Adam Brooks' shot was tipped by Dyson Stevenson.  That beat Chris Tai in the Hurricanes goal to make it 1-0 Regina.  A few minutes later the Canes would take a bad penalty and the Pats would go on the power play and make it a 2-0 game.  Lane Scheidl notched his first of the night as the puck deflected off him on the way through and with just over 2 minutes left in the period, Stevenson would score his 2nd of the game to give the Pats a 3-0 lead through 40 minutes of play.  Regina held the edge in shots 21-13.

In the third, the Pats would add to their lead with another power play goal. Dyson Stevenson completed the hatrick as he put the puck by Chris Tai to make it 4-0 Regina and that pretty much sealed the deal for the Pats.  The Hurricanes were unable to score in this one as Matt Hewitt would record the shutout for Regina.  Regina was 2/2 on the power play, while the Hurricanes finished the night 0/5.

The Hurricanes really didn't have much jump in this game until the 3rd period, but it was too little too late. The loss drops their record to 12-8-1-1 on the season.  It's only the second time in the past 4 weeks that the Hurricanes have lost a game in regulation time.

TAI STARTS AND TY SITS

For the first time this season, Chris Tai was the starting goaltender in a game for the Hurricanes. Tai has sat on the bench watching Ty Rimmer for the last two months and Saturday night in Regina, the rookie finally got the call.  Previous to this game, Rimmer was the only goalie in the WHL to have started every single game for his team this year, 21 consecutive as a matter of fact.

NEXT UP

The Hurricanes will have a day off in Regina Sunday as they rest up and get ready for the final game of this road trip Monday afternoon in Moose Jaw.  The Warriors and Canes will play a matinee game at Mosaic Place.  This will be the 3rd meeting of the season already between these two teams with both clubs winning once at home.  Moose Jaw is the only team to beat the Hurricanes in regulation time in the last 14 games, that was a 3-2 loss for Lethbridge about two and half weeks ago.  Game time from Moose Jaw is 1:00 pm (MST).  The pre-game show on CJOC at 12:30.  The Hurricanes return home after and won't play till Friday (Nov. 16) when they host the Prince Albert Raiders.

Thanks,
Pat

  1. One could probably guess that the Hurricanes did not play their normal game as they would have with Rims in net. They can play a bit more relaxed and risky at times. Whereas with Rims on the bench, and a rookie goaltender making his first start, I would think they would be more cautious and this unfortunately takes away from their game. No one can blame Christopher, afterall he has been on the bench for 21 straight games. But rest for Rims was needed, especially with a tough game with Moose Jaw Monday afternoon. Despite a long drive home tonight (after beating the Ice in Cranbrook) the Warriors will have a day to rest.
Canes certainly miss Hood's presence on the ice. He keeps the other teams honest. PP still a concern as they went 0/5. Here's hoping they come back with two wins under their belts.

  2. The poor PK also raised it's ugly head in this game (Regina PP 2/2).

Monday afternoon for a hockey game on a day when not everyone gets the day off? Good thing it's Moose Jaw. If the game were held here in town, I would be able to go. Odd game time in my opinion. At least I'll be able to listen to most of the game in my vehicle. Hope the boys can get their game legs back between now and then!

Missing Hood's big body leaves the smaller forwards vulnerable. Hope nobody gets hurt.

  3. From what I saw on the internet the Canes did not play that bad and out chanced Regina just did not finish. But it seems just too many changes in a short period of time...No Rimmer, No Galbraith and No Hood. It changes the dynamic. Canes were prime candidates for a loss. Glad to see they brought Olynek up to boost the fourth line. Canes can get back to having potential scoring lines. I suspect they will play much better in MJ with a days rest. Scott

  4. Can't win em all, but you maybe don't expect the team to lose THIS one, this way. FOUR shots in the first?? SHUT-OUT by Regina?

Good to be reminded early in the season of what you already know; although they have done VERY well (Thanks, Rimmer), the Canes are not THAT good, and Regina is not THAT bad... and Shaunavon, SK, produces some really good hockey players for a town under 2000!! -
