Streak Over! Hurricanes Win 4-3 in Shoot Out

LETHBRIDGE - The Hurricanes erased a 3-0 deficit to beat the Everett Silvertips 4-3 in a shoot out at the ENMAX Centre Wednesday night.

The Hurricanes came out gunning in this one, but it would be the Everett Silvertips who got on the scoreboard first. The Tips broke a scoreless tie with two goals just 14 seconds apart late in the period. First, Tyler Maxwell banked a shot in off Canes goalie Liam Liston on a power play to give Everett a 1-0 lead and right off the face off at centre ice, Jordyn Boyd moved down the left wing and lifted a shot by Liston's blocker and in to give Everett a 2-0 lead after one period of play. Lethbridge held the edge in shots 13-5 at one point, but the Tips closed that gap to 13-9.

In the second, the visitors would go up by three. Macoy Erkamps was called holding up Josh Birkholtz on a partial breakaway. Birkholtz was awarded a penalty shot and put a beautiful move on Liston, roofing the shot into the top of the net to give the Tips a 3-0 lead. The Hurricanes got that one back a minute later and followed that up with two more to even the score in short order. First, Brady Ramsey tapped home the puck by Kent Simpson to get the Hurricanes on the board for the first time in the game. It was Ramsey's 5th of the season. A few minutes later, the Canes and Ramsey would get another one. Everett's Jordyn Boyd was given a 5 minute major for clipping when he knocked down the Hurricanes Russ Maxwell with low hit around the knees. Ramsey moved in and snapped a shot by Simpson on the power play for his 6th of the year, making the score 3-2. Then 23 seconds later, the Canes got another one on the man advantage. Landon Oslanski fired home his 3rd of the season to tie the game 3-3. That's the way the period would end. The Hurricanes out shot Everett 27-24 after 40 minutes.

In the third, both teams opened things up to try and find that go-ahead goal. Neither team was able to score, so the game would head into overtime. The extra 5 minutes solved nothing so the game would go to a shoot out to determine a winner. The lone shoot out goal was scored by the Captain Cam Braes and the that gave the Hurricanes a 4-3 victory and put an end a long 123 game losing streak. The Hurricanes players jumped off the bench with excitement and relief, mauling Liam Liston to congratulate the goaltender on his first win as a Lethbridge Hurricane. Lethbridge was out shot 41-37 on the night. The Hurricanes finished the night 2/7 on the power play and Everett went 1/4 on the man advantage and also scored one short-handed.

It was a pretty feisty hockey game too. A couple of good fights in this one. Former teammates Cam Braes and Brennan Yadlowski when at it in the first period and then in the second, Nick Buonassisi went toe-to-toe with Lucas Grayson. There were also plenty of scrums after whistles throughout the course of the game. Hurricanes Captain Cam Braes said on the CJOC post-game show that he wants to thank the fans for sticking with the team through what was a really tough stretch for the Hurricanes. Braes says it's never been through such a long losing skid and now he's happy it's all over.

The Hurricanes are still battling injuries. Head Coach and G.M. Rich Preston says defenceman Daniel Johnston won't be ready to play until next Wednesday (Nov. 9) when the Canes host Seattle Damien Ketlo still isn't ready to go either. The Hurricanes called up defenceman Joel Topping to fill the void on the blueline Wednesday. Phil Tot made his return to the line-up against the Silvertips. He missed the last couple of weeks Wednesday's game also marked the return of former Hurricanes D-man Brennan Yadlowski to Lethbridge for the first since he was dealt to Everett. He was traded to the Tips last season in exchange for a second round draft pick from this past May's WHL Bantam draft.

NEXT UP

The Hurricanes hit the road Thursday morning for a quick to Saskatchewan to take on the Prince Albert Raiders Friday (Nov. 4) and then Saskatoon Saturday (Nov. 5). The Hurricanes next home game is November 9th when the host Seattle. That will be military appreciation night in honour of Remembrance Day.

Thanks,
Pat

  1. Great win for the canes! They finally manage to end their losing streak.
I though that the canes showed a lot of heart tonight. They competed and worked very hard the whole game. They did not buckle down after they were down by 3 goals, but stuck with the game plan.
Way to go! Now lets put a winning streak together!
    GO CANES GO

  3. Amazing, the Canes win and very few people will say anything publically. Yet they will gripe and moan when things arent going well. If you are going to criticize, you had better give credit when it's due. Well done Canes, hope you boys can get on a bit of a roll now!

  6. Praise is expected after beating this years version of the Tips on the last effort of a shootout?
Is that where this city is mentally?
    Holy, that's embarrassing.
Time to step up and stop behaving like someone's little brother, Lethbridge.

Can you not just let it go for this one win? Were you there last night? The absolute jubiliation in the building when the Hurricanes won and watching the players salute the crowd was outstanding. For just a few moments the fans, the players and the coaches shared a joint sigh of relief. The team rallied hard for that and deserved it. Today, can we not give them a bit of positive feedback and if that is not possible, can you wait until tomorrow to start complaining again? Is it too much to ask to let these young men simply feel good about themselves for just one day?

My hat is off to Cam Braes for leading his team to centre ice to celebrate and acknowledge the crowd. He is a captain who sets good examples in more ways than we give him credit for.

  8. @Anonymous 2:48......Time to give a pat on the back when it's due. If you're not going to say anything about the wins, don't say anything about the losses.

Let's go to Sask. and make it two in a row Canes!!

  9. Great win. Blast of a game to be at and a great effort by the boys. I have to complain though. Not about the players or coaches, surprise! Is it not pathetic that we have a new scoreboard and electronics system and they are still playing the same cassette for music we have for the past decade. here is a crazy idea Hurricanes, after the opposition scores a goal stop playing depressing music. That don't impress me much, you got lucky etc is horrible and makes getting scored on feel worse. how about updating the in game experience as not to depress the fans and players. and please please enough with the 1940s version of celebrating better known as the clap your hands song. Canes staff, please start earning your pay and change something that has been the same for too long.

make it 3 in a row this weekend
    go canes go

  10. At the game last night and yes the Canes made some mistakes. They got down 3-0, but they dug relly deep worked their tails off, stuck up for one another, and they worked for each other. Great effort and nice to see. Ramsay played very well as did Liston. Even though he let three in and don't blame him totally for those. He was stellar for the remained and the shoot out very happy for him big weight off his shoulders. Kizik looked after the bonehead that slashed Liston as well.

    Great effort Canes!

  11. Really well written, 3:12!! Many excellent points!

I am certain that everyone within 10 meters of me regreted being near me, but I sure enjoyed being there at the end of this one to whistle and cheer until my voice was gone.

I have written many times that I wished the players would salute the fans at the end of games to try and build loyalty and increase fan-base... but until now, it just wouldn't have been real. Hopefully the players keep feeling the fan support, and this little ritual can continue.

Not sure what player/fan experience is better... Winning the Memorial Cup... or starting a new streak after losing 13 straight.... It felt pretty awesome for me last night, and the players seemed to enjoy the win a lot, but I wouldn't mind having the other experience,... just to be able to make an informed decision :-) Thanks for the hard work, lads, and very special thanks to Russell Maxwell for the TSN turning point. Can't believe you bounced up so fast after that one! - Richie.
