Canes Prospect Bilous Plays in CJHL Prospects Game

The Lethbridge Hurricanes have more good news to report after the recent 2011 World Junior A Challenge in Langley, BC.

As part of that tournament, there was also the CJHL Prospects game, and suiting up for Team West was Lethbridge Hurricanes list player Braxton Bilous. The 1994-born 6’1, 192 pound Defenceman from Langley plays for the Victoria Grizzlies of the BCHL and has 7 points (3G, 4A) in 22 games so far this season.

In the first game against Team East, Team West erased one-goal deficits three times including in the third period when Bilous scored at 13:51 to tie the game sending it to overtime. Team West went on to win the game 4-3 giving them a one-goal lead heading into Sunday’s final of the total-goal series. In the finale, Team West won the game 5-3 winning the two-game, total-goal series 9-3 giving them the President’s Cup as CJHL Prospects Games Champions. It also marked the fourth time in seven year’s Team West earns national bragging rights.

While Bilous did not attend training camp this past September with the Lethbridge Hurricanes, he remains a highly touted player within the organization. Bilous playing in the Prospects game also brings the total to 13 the number of players and prospects that have participated in tournaments this year. Jay Merkley, Macoy Erkamps, Craig Leverton and Remi Laurencelle were all recently named to the 2012 World Under-17 Hockey Challenge next month, while eight Canes draft picks participated in the U-16 Challenge Cup last month in Moose Jaw.

  1. Pat, Just curious why he wasn't at camp and if the 'canes have any plans to call him up next time they go to BC.

  2. I'm going to take a shot in the dark and say he's thinking NCAA. Correct me if I'm wrong Pat but I believe if he plays 1 WHL game regular season or exhibition he forfeits a year of NCAA eligibility. Also I thought there were also some pretty strict NCAA rules regarding even coming to camp. All expenses need to be paid out of pocket and nothing can be paid by the team. I'm not sure how it works when a prospect comes to camp anyways so I don't know if that would have anything to do with it or not.

Regardless I think there is 4 letters behind the reason we haven't (or possibly won't) see him as a Hurricane.

  3. That's an interesting thought Artie, but the article says that he didn't even come to camp this past September, so I'm curious as to why he didn't do that. Surely an Canes intersquad game wouldn't disqualify him from NCAA would it?
