The Western Hockey League today released its schedule of games for the 2011-12 regular season.
The 2011 WHL Opening Weekend will launch on Thursday, September 22, with a special Opening Night game in Moose Jaw featuring the first ever WHL Regular Season game to be played in the brand new Moose Jaw Multi-plex between the Warriors and Brandon Wheat Kings. The game will be broadcast LIVE on SHAW TV with the pre-game show starting at 7:00 pm (MT).
The 2011-12 WHL Regular-Season schedule gets into full swing on Friday, September 23, with six games including the 2011 WHL Champion Kootenay Ice beginning defence of their Ed Chynoweth Cup against the Rebels in Red Deer.
Nine WHL games are set for Saturday, September 24, including a new era of WHL hockey in Victoria, BC, as the Royals will host the Vancouver Giants for their first ever regular season home game at the Save-On-Foods Memorial Centre. This game will also be a feature broadcast LIVE on SHAW TV starting at 7:00 pm (PT).
The 792 game regular season concludes on Sunday, March 18th with the 2012 WHL Playoffs and the battle for the Ed Chynoweth Cup beginning on Friday, March 23rd.
The QMJHL and the City of Shawinigan, Quebec will serve as the official hosts for the 2012 MasterCard Memorial Cup. The Shawinigan Cataractes will host the WHL Champions, Ontario Hockey League Champions and the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League Champions from May 18 – 27, 2012.
As in previous seasons, the majority of games will be played on the weekend. Of the 792 games, 538 are scheduled for the weekend, with 233 to be played on a Friday, 235 on a Saturday and 70 on a Sunday. Additionally, 8 weekday games occur on various holidays throughout the season, meaning close to 70% of the schedule is played on a weekend or non-school days. During the week, Wednesday night has 145 matches, 84 games are scheduled for Tuesday, 13 contests will be played on Thursday and 12 games are scheduled to be held on Monday.
