Rebels Rout Hurricanes 10-2 in Red Deer

RED DEER - Four goals in the first period and four more in the second pushed the Rebels to a convincing 10-2 win over the Lethbridge Hurricanes Wednesday night in Red Deer.

The Rebels scored early and often in the first period of this game as Red Deer opened things with three goals in just over 10 minutes. Byron Froese got the scoring started and made it 1-0 Rebels just a few minutes in. Then two minutes later, Turner Elson was sprung free while short-handed. That gave the home side a 2-0 lead. It was also the third time in two games that the Hurricanes have given up a short-handed goal to the opposition. Just past the 10 minute mark of the period, the Rebels would go up 3-0 when John Persson beat Brandon Anderson. That would be it for the Hurricanes starting goalie. Dylan Tait would get the tap on the shoulder to take over. Anderson had allowed 3 goals on 8 shots at that point. Before the end of the period Red Deer would go up 4-0 when Turner Elson notched his second of the night, this time on the power play. Not a good period of hockey for the Canes' to start this game. Red Deer out shot Lethbridge 12-6 in the opening 20 minutes.

In the second, the Rebels kept on rolling with four more goals. Byron Froese scored his second on a power play to make it 5-0. Then Turner Elson scored his third of the night on yet another on a power play. That put Red Deer ahead 6-0. The Rebels were not done there. Daulton Siwak fired a shot past Tait to make it 7-0. That would be it for Dylan Tait as the Hurricanes would make their second goaltending change of the game. Before the end of the period, Red Deer would make it 8-0 when the Hurricanes coughed up the puck at the Rebels blueline and Brett Ferguson would move in on a break-away and beat Brandon Anderson. It was another rough period of hockey for the Canes'. Red Deer held the edge in shot 32-15 after 40 minutes.

In the third, Colten Mayor fired a shot past Anderson to make to it 9-0 Red Deer. The Hurricanes would finally break the shut out bit for Dawson Guhle. Cam Braes scored back-to-back power play markers less than a minute apart for his team-leading 25th and 26th goals of the season to make it a 9-2 score. Red Deer though would end up hitting double digits on the score clock before the end of the night. Lucas Grayson just made it 10-2 Rebels after sneaking in from the point and firing a shot past Anderson. That would be the final score. It wasn't a pretty night for Lethbridge, not by any means. They really struggled in this game. The final shots heavily favoured Red Deer 49-24. The Rebels went 4 for 9 on the power play while the Canes' went 2 for 5. The loss drops the Hurricanes record to 17-23-2-7. The remain tied for 8th place in the Eastern Conference.

Max Ross left the game in the third period after receiving a high hit from Red Deer's Matthew Dumba. Mike Reddington received a penalty after the play for jumping in and starting a fight with Dumba. The Hurricanes bench wasn't happy with the hit either. Ross left this ice a little woozy, but later returned to finish the game. It was a tough night for the Hurricanes. They were down 4-0 after 20 minutes and against a team like Red Deer, that's a tough deficit to come back from.

NEXT UP

The Hurricanes will close out the month of January with a home-and-away series with the Kootenay ICE this weekend. The Canes' will host the ICE Friday and then travel to Cranbrook for the re-match Saturday. Both games are 7:00 pm (MST) starts on 94.1, CJOC. The Canes' have a win and a loss versus Kootenay this season.

Thanks,
Pat

  1. What a disgraceful performance by the Hurricanes! But even more so is the fact that the supposed leaders on defense were the leaders in penalty minutes. Mahachek piled up 19 minutes plus a game misconduct and the Captain Reddington another 17 minutes. Certainly the Rebels are a very good hockey club, obviously head and shoulders above the Canes. But where the heck is the sense of compete? This team is supposed to be doing everything to make it into the playoffs. They can't hold leads; they get flustered when they get behind; they resort to chippy rough play; all signs of a rudderless ship!

  2. was at the game the canes spend way too much time in the box, they take too many retaliation penaltys , this is something that the coaches should have a handle on by now, if the kid cant get it to sink in and takes dumb penalties, then you sit him out and think about it. they looked bad, and you got to remember rebels had their back up goalie in net, not that it would have mattered they did not get many good scoring chances.

  3. I was at the game as well and I agree that penalties by the veterans, kill us, Maxwell Ross, Reddington, Machacek game after game hurt the team....having said that it was 4-0 in the the first and only 1 goal was a Powerplay...those 4 goals were on 12 shots and at one point there were 8 goals on 32 shots...no team wins with Goaltending like that. When Tait and Anderson make the first save and limit rebounds we win...didn't happen last night....team looked exhausted and need to regroup for tomorrow. Go Canes! TD

  4. It is not Reddington's fight that disturbed me. The high hit on Ross required a response. The penalties to Mitch Maxwell left me wondering. He takes a slashing penalty then talks himself into another two min. unsportsmanlike conduct penalty. The result two powerplay goals. I listened to the game on the radio and did not hear his name again after this. Hopefully Preston sat him down. A better effort is required by all of the Canes on Friday. Let's Go Canes.

  6. I've got some great news!

My buddy called from Red Deer and said that the Rebel players are feeling really bad about the past two games (5-0, then 10-2), so instead of playing their number one or back-up goal-tenders in their next games against us (just before and just after Valentines), the Rebels are requesting league approval to dress their Zamboni driver (never skated or played hockey before) in net for both games, AND have all their players "skate" one hundred yards across a concrete floor in their game-skates before both games, AND use sticks with the wrong curves... to give us the handicap we need.

He wanted to know if that would be enough? - Richie.

  7. Pat, what did Cason do to get a FIVE game suspension in this game?

  8. I'm told the suspension is for leaving the bench just at the end of the second period to fight Red Deer's Alex Petrovic.
