Canes' Acquire D-Man Kizuik From Blades

Lethbridge Hurricanes General Manager/Head Coach, Rich Preston, announced this afternoon the Canes have traded one of their two picks sixth round of the 2011 WHL Bantam draft to the Saskatoon Blades in exchange for 92-born defenseman Tyler Kizuik. The 6’2, 190 pound d-man from Indian Head, SK was originally drafted by the Prince George Cougars in the third round (54th overall) in the 2007 WHL Bantam Draft. He was later acquired by the Blades in 2009 in exchange for a conditional sixth round pick in 2011. Kizuik is in his second WHL season after posting nine points (2G,7A) in 48 games last season – his rookie year.

The move gives the Hurricanes seven defensemen on their current 23 man roster while Kiziuk immediately adds another body to the Canes stable of 92-born defensemen including the likes of Daniel Johnston, Derek Ryckman and Landon Oslanski. Lethbridge also still holds four picks in the first two rounds of the 2011 WHL Draft – this a year after making four selections in the first two round of the 2010 WHL Draft.

Kizuik is expected to join the Hurricanes in Lethbridge in time for Sunday’s match up with the Medicine Hat Tigers.

  1. This deal had to happen. With Johnston probably out and Jackson possibly still out Mr. Preston had to find a d-man. Kiziuk seems like a good sized guy. With the addition of Cox to the Blades defensive corp is no wonder they had one to spare. Some points would be good to see from him.

Welcome to the Hurricanes Tyler. Good luck!

  2. Nice that Preston didn't overspend to get him. Can't imagine that Kizuik wanted to leave Saskatoon, so lets just hope he actually comes. It sucks when you make a deal and the player quits the league or just flat out refuses to come here, right Stasiuk!?

  3. This looks like a stinky deal to me already. Not really a great sign that this player has not played a game with the Blades since "Promote a Referee from WeeWee Night" at the Enmax on Nov 26!... So yes, its great news that it didn't cost much to get him, but is he hurt, did he stay out too late with the coaches daughter, or just not good enough to play regular with the Blades??

Also not great news that he has not had a point or a plus +/- rating in any game this year (other than the night he played against us). I hope we did a bit more work on this one than the Reners-trade, or did we make just ONE phone call again? I sure hope I am wrong - Richie.

  4. Keep building Mr. Preston. Four capable 19 year old d-men next year is how you develop the young ones.

  5. Got to love the reactions. No matter what Preston does or doesn't do, it is always wrong. Pretty sad.

  6. Speaking of past acquisitions and "No matter what Preston does"... In a 4-1 loss to Swift Current yesterday, MARK RENERS was one of only three Giants to have a Plus rating (He had the first assist on Vancouver's only goal in this game).

Trading him for a 5th rounder will likely be referred to as one of the WORST trades in Hurricanes team history (and one of the best for Giants). Learn to use the strengths of your players Preston, don't always try to push the square through the circle hole! You don't just get rid of an asset like Mark! If you absolutely couldn't stand Reners, I bet you could have called any 10 teams and got a better trade than a 5th round choice!

  7. He has a plus in one game and it's the worst trade in history?

    Since the 08/09 season
    89 games played
    14 goals
    12 assists

Is this really what you expect out of a first round bantam pick? Trade is done, so lets stop crying and move on

  8. Maybe he played 1 shift in the whole game, thus not being on the ice to get a minus like the rest of the team...
