Hurricanes Have Shot At First Overall Bantam Pick

Well the Hurricanes off-season is barely a day old and already it's become a bit more interesting.

Seattle's 4-3 overtime win over Vancouver Sunday put the Hurricanes into the three team Bantam draft lottery which takes place this Wednesday, March 17th to determine which of the bottom three teams in the WHL after the regular season, Prince George, Edmonton, or Lethbridge will get the first overall pick in April's 2010 WHL draft. The Canes' finished third last overall after the Thunderbirds game versus the Giants wrapped up. All Seattle needed was to earn a single point to put Lethbridge into that lottery.

The Cougars will have the better of the chances when it comes to getting that first overall pick. The lottery is done by putting bingo balls into a machine. The last place team gets the most bingo balls in that machine for finishing with the least amount of wins, which gives P.G. the best opportunity out of the three. Edmonton will get a few more bingo balls than Lethbridge, but I suppose all it takes is one to win the lotto. Regardless, the Hurricanes still have a chance at the number one pick. Being in the top three picks overall for sure come the draft, the Canes' will no doubt get a top end pick. The pressure and attention now turns to Rich Preston's management and drafting staff to put their collective heads together and make the right pick of picks for that matter. It should be fun to see what all shakes down this week and in the last week of April too.

  1. Prince George gets 6 balls into the draw barrel, Edmonton gets 4 balls into the draw barrel and the Hurricanes get 2. The Hurricanes can end up picking either 1st or 3rd. If Prince George or Edmonton gets the first pick, the other team will automatically pick 2nd, leaving the Hurricanes with 3rd. Seattle's win at least gives the Hurricanes a 1/6 chance at 1st rather than no chance at all.
