Canes Lose 2-1 in Shoot Out

LETHBRIDGE - A shoot out goal by Kootenay ICE Captain Dustin Sylvester helped the visitors to a 2-1 win over the Hurricanes last night at the Enmax Centre.

A great start to this game for Lethbridge. Just a couple of minutes in, Carter Bancks returned to the line-up with a bang as he scored short-handed to put the Canes ahead 1-0. The Lethbridge penalty killers did an excellent job in the opening period, killing three ICE power plays. Kootenay though would tie the score late in the first right off the face-off to the right Linden Rowat. Christian Magnus evened the score for the ICE. The shots on goal favoured Kootenay 7-6 after one period of play.

In the second, not a whole lot took place to be perfectly honest. The tight defensive play continued. Neither team was able to break the 1-1 tie. The shots in the second favoured the Canes 7-6. Everything was even after 40 minutes. It was tied at one and the shots were even at 14 a piece. Even the play was fairly even. It was a pretty good hockey game overall through two periods.

In the third, still even Steven. Neither team was able to break the 1-1 tie. Some good chances though by both teams, but this game would have to go into extra time. The shots after regulation favoured Lethbridge 24-19. In the O.T. Lethbridge would get a power play, but again were unable to score although they had some really good chances. The final shots were 28-21 Hurricanes. In the shootout, only one player would find the twine. Kootenay Captain Dustin Sylvester beat Rowat between the legs to give the ICE the lead and that is the way things would stay. All three Lethbridge shooters were unable to score and the game would end 2-1 in a shoot out. The power plays for both teams really struggled last night. The Canes went 0 for 7 while Kootenay finished the night 0 for 5. The Hurricanes have just two wins in their past 19 games. This young team has really struggled over the past two months.

Hall of Fame Inductions

A great pre-game induction ceremony last night prior to the game. It lasted about half an hour and I think the fans really enjoyed it. A big hats off to all those who organized the event. I had a chance to interview Bryan Trottier and Wes Walz during our radio intermissions last evening. It was a fun night for sure. Trottier, Walz, and the Hockey Hounds join the Sutters, John Chapman, Jamie McLennan, Steve Tambellini, and Steve Falwell in the Hurricanes and Broncos Hall of Fame.

Next Up

The Hurricanes are offering $12.00 walk up tickets for tonight's home game against Edmonton. This will be the last meeting of the season between the Canes' and Oil Kings. Edmonton won the last match-up 4-1 at Rexall Place on Friday. Game time is 6pm (MT). The pre-game show on CJOC at 5:30.

Thanks,
Pat

  1. Congrats to Dick Gibson and his team for arranging the pre-game tribute to Walz, Trottier, and the Hockey Hounds! This is the type of classy effort that the Canes need to continue with, if they want to improve our club's reputation among young players, their parents, and NHL clubs.

I really enjoyed the hockey game. I admit that I was definitely Negative-Ned going into this one. I thought that from our history against Kootenay this year, and considering how they have come on strong in the latter part of this season, a 8-1 loss might have been considered a success on our part.

Great effort by all Canes! Pretty nice job by Cowley and Papp not to be manipulated by the antics and spoiled-child behaviour of Kootenay coach, Holick. How embarrassing for Ice players and fans. He and his staff put on an Academy Award worthy show when the Ice went down 5 on 3 in the third, then again when Sylvester's Dive-show didn't draw the result they wanted while short-handed. How he didn't receive a bench minor for his language and behaviour is beyond me (Certainly, our players and coaches have received bench and unsportsmanlike penalties for much less this year)

Unfortunately for the Canes, Sylvester is a very skilled player, and he won the game for the underserving Ice in the shootout. He should have received the Ice's only star selection too, as he played an unreal number of minutes for a forward, and outperformed Steele Boomer by far.

And the Carter Bancks Hardest Working Cane Award goes to.... Carter Bancks! (Honorable mention to Fyten... VERY impressive to come back after the hit he took!) Broken wing or not, nothing good happens to this team this year without CB7.

Is Preston EVER going to give Reners, Moser, Tot and Donaghy some Powerplay time?? Do you think our Powerplay could get any less productive?? Wow, that is a painful thing to watch! - Richie.
