It appears the Lethbridge Hurricanes are going to be without the services of defenceman Luca Sbisa for longer than expected and it has nothing to do with the olympics.
TSN's Bob McKenzie is reporting on Twitter that, "Sbisa's injury is a torn ab/oblique muscle. Four weeks. Should be ready for Olympics but won't have played a lot of hockey before then." Here's the link to his twitter site: http://twitter.com/TSNBobMcKenzie. Thanks to Jay for the lead.
I'm sure this is the last thing Hurricanes Head Coach/GM Rich Preston wanted to hear. I haven't asked him about it yet, but I would assume he's concerned no doubt. Regardless whether the Canes' planned to keep Sbisa or trade him before the deadline, this is surely not good news for Lethbridge.
Sbisa didn't play much in the Swiss Team's last few games and left the ice the other night hunched over. Hopefully it's not as bad as it sounds. Obviously bad enough I suppose to keep Sbisa sidelined for a month.
Thanks,
Pat
How will this affect the ability of Preston to move Sbisa at the deadline? Or was the plan to hold on to him?
ReplyDeleteHappy New Year Pat!
not a chance that we were going to hold on to him...up to this point preston made some rock solid deals but imo dropped the ball big time by not unloading luca before the world jr's....i cant understand why hold onto him when he is at the jr's, then back for only a couple game before trade deadline...he will be down and out for for at least a month then off to the olympics for 2 weeks while the canes keep taking it on the chin..this is our biggest tradeing asset and he will do us no good on the ice or any trade before jan. 10th....if preston make this one work now i will be amazed...but it should have been done weeks ago...
ReplyDeleteI too agree, that Preston may have dropped the ball on this move or non-move! A trade for Sbisa would have added to the bank of draft picks and young players for the Canes. Now with Sbisa injured his value drops. I certainly hope Preston makes the deals for Bancks and Rowat if other teams are knocking on the door!
ReplyDeleteFun listening to the Canes comeback to beat the Tigers. It sounded like Reners is starting to play his game.

Couple of comments,,,Sbisa is a European, teams are limited to only 2 Imports. This will limit the trade options, Or affect what the Hurricanes will get in return. PLUS knowing he was probably going to the Olympics (which has been confirmed)will limit the amount of games he could play for any new team. I personally hope he stays for the rest of the year! He will be a Great Mentor for the Young D men. Chances are we will not make the playoffs, this could give Luca a chance of representing Switzerland in the IIHF World Championships in Germany! A rare Triple! I don't think any player has ever done this? IIHF U20 Championships, Winter Olympics, & IIHF Mens Championships all in the same Year!!
