Close, But Yet So Far

I did a little digging this week to see just how many one-goal games the Lethbridge Hurricanes have been involved in this season. A lot actually.

Out of 32 games played this season for the Canes', almost half, 15 in fact have been decided by just one goal. The Hurricanes have lost 10 and won 5 of those one goal games. It shows just how close Lethbridge has been to being in the mix in terms of a playoff spot, but yet how much ground they still have to make up. Coulda, shoulda, woulda I suppose. Those two 6 game losing streaks this team went on really put the Hurricanes behind the eight ball this year. I think maybe that's the most frustrating thing for the players and coaches to except is just how close things have been when you put things into perspective.

One thing is for sure, this Lethbridge team despite it's record has been competitive. Sure, they've been on the wrong end of a few lop-sided scores, but most of those games took place in the first couple weeks of the season.

So close, but yet so far!

Thanks,
Pat

  1. Yes they have been close but let's be realistic, they are not a playoff bound team. Which brings up the subject of much debate, more trades. Since you and your side kick were reluctant to name names on your talkshow, (we all know the two most sought after commodities are Bancks and Sbisa). After doing a little checking currently of the 3 top teams in each division there is only one team with an overage spot open and that is the Kootenay Ice. How ironic it would be if Bancks ended up there. There are 4 teams with a Euro spot open: Tri-Cities (who the Canes like to deal with), Kelowna (2 Euro spots), Calgary and Saskatoon. I would think that Preston would make the moves well ahead of the trading deadline rather than leave it up to the last minute. The only drawback with Sbisa is, he will be gone for quite a bit of time due to the World Jrs. and the Olympics. Preston has made the right moves in stock piling draft picks and young players. One other observation. Since Ashton was traded the powerplay is 5-13 (38%). A vast improvement don't you think?

  2. A huge improvement actually. I certainly agree. No question Rich Preston holdS all the cards here. He's no question the one controlling things. RJ, you make some very good points. I know other fans are thinking the very same thing and wondering when and if something will be done.

  3. Looking at the standings as of today, if the Hurricanes would have come out on top of just 5 of those 10 losses you mention, they would have 34 points. This is still out of a playoff spot as today's standings sit but only by one point. You are right Pat. They have been so very close to much success. Hopefully this will solve those one goal games in the second half. It may be too little too late but who knows?!

    Go Canes!

  4. bancks would be a big improovement as a 20 on more teams than just the ice..if you look at spokane 20's they are weak to say the least(letts, bartman), moosejaw also carter would be an big upgrade over smuk..there are more than a few teams that could use him...
