Robson Resigns as Canes' Assistant G.M.

Breaking News........

Brad Robson has resigned his positions as Assistant Hurricanes General Manager and Director of Scouting effectively immediately. I spoke with Robson late this afternoon and he confirmed this is indeed the case. He is also pulling his name out of the running for the vacant G.M. job with the hockey club. As for the reasons, Robson told me the board of directors has taken too long to make a decision on this position and therefore he's decided to step aside effective now from all his duties.

Earlier today, before I found out the information regarding Robson, I spoke with Team President Bryan McNaughton who told me a new G.M. likely wouldn't be announced until early next week. He says the board held a meeting Thursday to discuss the hiring and that more follow-up is needed in regards to the candidates. He says the board has deliberated on this and the hiring committee hopes to have a recommendation for the board this weekend, with an announcement next week.

In a news release late Friday, Canes' Governor Herman Elfring stated, "The Board of Directors and the organization was unable to finalize a decision this week and though professional protocol does not allow us to reveal details, deliberation will continue. We are still on schedule with our original deadline of June 29th" said Elfring "We are dedicated to completing this process and hope that this news will not distract from larger events next week such as the WHL scheduling meetings and the NHL Entry Draft."

With Robson's name now out of mix, the pool of potential candidates has to be seriously thinned out by now. It'll be interesting to see how this all plays out over the weekend and into next week.

Thanks,
Pat

  1. This is very sad news for the Hurricanes. I am disappointed in the board and all that are involved in this mess. Robson has been there for the Hurricanes along with others and he is being
    treated like crap.
Good Luck Mr. Robson with your next assignment.

  2. I don't blame Robsob one bit. He was the Assistant GM and Director of Scouting and being slapped in the face by the board. I wish him the best and hope he leaves with his head held high. He did a good job scouting and Lethbridge will miss his knowledge and eye for talent.
    Good Luck to him.

  3. With Marc Habscheid making a committment to Chilliwack, I dont think there is much a 'quality' personnel left to choose from. You know the old saying, if you are chasing 2 rabbits at the same time, you will probably lose both. With all the delays, the Board is losing their choices of quality people to choose from and now you have to add the loss of Robson -- a knowledgeable hockey scout as well as having good contacts within the entire hockey world -- WHL, NHL, AJHL, and AHL. I think today the Hurricanes have taken another back in their building process -- Thanks Board of Directors.

  5. time to sell this team to private ownership...the board has prooved over and over again that they are nothing but a useless group that turns this team into the joke of the whl ...disgusting to say the least.....good luck mr robson.....

  6. Ok, I want to know just who he brought in? Who is this talent we speak of? He has only been in Lethbridge a year or two, so just how many players on the roster did he have anything to do with. His young players are ok, nothing more than that. The Jackson kid they took two years ago, will never play in Lethbridge. So where is this talent and keen eye. To me he was an arrogant know it all. Totally unapproachable. Not enough mirrors in Lethbridge for him either. Total pretty boy. It doesn't bother me that he is on the next train out of here. He and Roy Stasiuk were cut from the same cloth. In saying all that, I agree that the board needs to get going here and make a decision.

  7. Well, personally I got to know Brad fairly well over the past few years while I've been broadcasting for the Hurricanes and he's never come across to me as being arrogant. In fact, to me at least he was always forthcoming and quite easy to talk to. Always willing to talk. He's a well respected man, that I know from other hockey people I've talked to.

  8. Obviously Anonymous knows nothing about hockey or scouting. Did you forget where Sceviour came from in 2008 and maybe you should look into the past Draft lists and see how many of the players that are playing in Lethbridge since Brad has been involved in the scouting process -- Fyten, Ashton, Braes, Reners, Anderson, Ryckman. They maybe young, but lets see where they take us before you slam the man. And being the A/GM he has to follow protocol, but being a GM he sets the protocol. Predicting talent is not easy at the ages of 13 and 14, but Im sure Swifty will benefit from his expertise. And I agree, Lethbridge needs to go to a private ownership deal or we will never see progress.

  9. Those players traded for he may have had some inputon. Those other kids were drafted by past head scouts. Brads first pick on behalf of the hurricanes was Phil Tot. Check his stats from last year and get back to me. Not saying he is a bad guy, just got a bad impression from him from a few meetings.

  10. My question is:
Did he leave because it is obvious that the board doesn't appear to be selecting him or Sutter? Or is he moving on to another team? Either way Lethbridge has lost a great guy. Wish him the best

  11. Whether Robson was the right guy for the job or not, we have to have respect for him, and thank him for at least staying around as long as he did. Let's face it, this team is in serious trouble. This whole mess needs to get figured out real quick! It's quite simple, put Rich Sutter at reigns of this team, leave him alone, and let him build a team that plays with some passion. We have lost one Western League Team, if we stay on the path we are on, this one will be gone as well. Good to see some blogs on this, shows at least a few people care about this team!

  12. Is the board trying to get the first round pick in the 2010 Bantam draft? Because they are becoming the laughing stock of the league.

  13. I think one thing the Board of Directors has missed is not only does Mr. Robson have 20+ years of hockey scouting experience. But, he's go immense people management skills and numerous other skills that he has gained and developed in the police force. There is more to Mr. Robson than his hockey experience. And it takes more than hockey experience to manage a hockey organization.
He won't be out of hockey long. Lethbridge's loss for sure.
