Canes' Announce Coaching Change

This is hot off the presses........

Lethbridge, AB – Roy Stasiuk, General Manager of the Lethbridge Hurricanes announced today the contract of Head Coach, Michael Dyck, will not be renewed when it expires on May 31st.

“A review of hockey operations has been completed and everyone has been evaluated. There is no one particular or specific reason for this decision. In moving forward we’re turning a page and we will maintain working towards our mandate regarding player development. I have respect for Michael’s abilities and capabilities as a Head Coach and wish him good luck in his future hockey or business endeavors”, added Stasiuk.

Michael Dyck compiled a record of 131-114-9-13 in 267 games as Head Coach of the Canes. He had previously served as an Assistant Coach from 1997 to 2002.

I had a chance to talk with G.M. Stasiuk by phone after this official announcement this morning. He told me Assistant Coach Matt Kabayama will remain with the Canes' organization, contrary to some earlier reports. Kabayama , he says remains under contract. Stasiuk wouldn't give specifics on any replacement candidates for bench boss, but he did tell me he'd like to see a new head coach in place by June 30th.

Thanks,
Pat

  2. As my teammate on the 88-89 Pats, Mike was a classy individual who provided a ton of leadership to the young defencemen coming up ( Jamie Heward, Kevin Haller, Terry Hollinger). I am sure you'll see him show up somewhere real soon in the WHL.

  3. THIS IS BAD BAD NEWS!!! The Canes cannot have Roy in charge... the boys will not play for him. Roy needs to go!

  4. Nice job Roy. I think you were planning this for a while. Picking up Beech was evidence of this. Acquire a player who is good on paper but a cancer on and off the ice. The blame will go on the coach for not being able to take a roster with unlimited talent further. Roy knew he would look good for trying to make a push and Mike would look bad because he could not control Kyle. Who made the canes a better team last year? Mike Wuchturl. Not a spoiled underachiever. This was truly subtraction by addition. Roy thanks for selling the future while not improving the present. Keep giving away goalies and making the rest of the league better. This may be a conspiracy theory but Roy has been planning this for a while. Is anybody going to want to play for us next year? I'm sure Roy will trade for a couple of players who will not get on the bus. At least you have a job Roy. If being a GM is not in the cards for you you might want to try out for the apprentice. Seems like you are good at setting people up to be fired. Good luck Mike in all you do in the future. You did not deserve to go out like this.

PS Please sell the team so somebody is accountable. Being the joke of the league is becomming very tired.

  5. A dark day for hockey in Lethbridge, not sure how Roy or any board member can look themselves in the mirror! Ben and Rich stepped up and called it like they saw it. They join the coaching staff as the only honest people in this nightmare!

  6. It's hard to believe this organization could ever have respect within the league let alone here in Lethbridge to host the Memorial Cup. Another terible decision!
