Hurricanes Announce Hall of Fame Inductees

The Sutter Brothers and former coach John Chapman will be inducted into the Hurricanes/Broncos Hall of Fame next week.

Brian, Darryl, Duane, Brent, Rich, and Ron Sutter all played their junior hockey in Lethbridge with the Broncos while Chapman coached the team from 1980-1986 and posted over 200 wins with the organization. As for the Sutters, no family in North America is more prominent in hockey than the Sutters. The six Brothers played with the Lethbridge Broncos between the years of 1974-1983 and between them collectively played in over 5000 NHL games!

Last year, the Canes'/Broncos Alumni Committee inducted Steve Tambellini, Jamie McLennan, and former broadcaster Steve "Foggy" Falwell into the hall.

The induction ceremony takes place Next Friday February 20th before the Hurricanes host the Medicine Hat Tigers. John Chapman spoke with the media in Lethbridge earlier this week. Here's the interview with Chappy:

  1. I think that the canes are missing the boat with their hall of fame every year. Having Jamie as the only Hurricane to go in recently is not right. It is like we are catching up trying to make up history in a short period of time by inducting so many people. We are not the Regina Pats or Medicine Hat Tigers and we should not pretend to be. It would be a better idea to retire a jersey or two from the Hurricane players who made this team what it is so there is a little meaning. Right now you can hardly read the names of all the recent inductees. Hang a jersey and do things the right way. It is like the canes are catering to the 60+ crowd by only honoring the people they do. Putting all the Sutters in at the same time is just pandering to the audience. It is also diminishing the value of the hall. If you induct 4 or more guys every year we are going to run out of meaningful candidates. Don't dilute it to the point where we are inducting every member of the hockey hounds and Perry Shockey. At this rate that time will come. If the team wants to build a legacy start honoring the Hurricanes. Guys like Bryce Salvador, Brent Seabrook, Wes Walz, Jamie Pushor, Byron Ritchie, and Kris Versteeg just to name a few had great multi-year contributions to the team and deserve to have their numbers hung in the Sportsplex. The hurricanes franchise is being ignored here by the old timers on the board. Please canes make this night for Hurricanes fans young and old. Maybe we should try and convince the city (again) to sell so this team has some direction. I challenge the board members to eat one of the concession stand burgers. Seriously if somebody at the top cared about the quality of the product on and off the ice we would all be able to eat at the game. Just a pipe dream I know. Just a side thought... if the burgers were called a "Maxi Burger" when Brian Maxwell was coach what are they called now? That would be a more appropriate way to describe them. Done ranting for now. Go canes go!
