Chiefs Hold on to Beat Canes' 5-3

It was great night to be a Mitch!

Three 2nd period goals helped the Spokane Chiefs to a 5-3 victory over the Hurricanes last night, ending Lethbridge's two game winning streak.

The Hurricanes sported their "Pink in the Rink" jerseys in support of breast cancer last night. The Chiefs came out gunning in this one. Linden Rowat (left) was a busy guy between the pipes as the Canes' were out shot 14-8. Kyle Beach had 6 of those shots himself for the Chiefs. Spokane though did get the first goal. A defensive giveaway in the Hurricanes zone put the Chiefs up 1-0 when Mitch Wall capitalized off a turnover. Not too long after that, the Hurricanes would respond 33 seconds later, when Mitch Maxwell scored his 18th of season to even the game 1-1 after one. The last Hurricane to score 18 goals in his rookie season was Zach Boychuk who accomplished that in the 2005/2006 season.

In the second, the Chiefs opened up a 4-1 lead, including a short-handed goal by Mitch Wahl. It was Wahl's second goal of the night as he opened the scoring for the Spokane in the first. Spokane again came on strong in the second and it paid off big time. They cycled the puck very well, crashed the net hard and have one of the fastest transition games I've seen this season by any team in the WHL. The shots after 40 minutes favoured the Chiefs 30-18. Spokane gave Linden Rowat all he could handle in the Hurricanes goal in this game.

In the 3rd, Canes' would mount a bit of a comeback. The Hurricanes would score on their first two shots of the period. Mitch Maxwell would get his second of the game and then he assisted on a goal by Reid Jackson a few moments later to cut the Spokane lead to 4-3. Maxwell had a great game with two goals and one assist for the Canes'. The second goal of the night by Maxwell gives him 19 for the season. The Hurricanes would pull the goalie late, but Mitch Wahl would score his 3rd of the game into an empty net to ice the game for the Chiefs. Final score 5-3 Chiefs. Spokane out shot the Hurricanes 42-23. Mitch Maxwell had a 3 point night for the Hurricanes, while Mitch Wahl had a hatrick for Spokane. Like I said, it was a great night to be a Mitch!

Home Sweet Home Maxwell

As mentioned earlier, Mitch Maxwell scored his team leading 18th and 19th goal of the year last night. I had a little chat with Paul Kingsmith from Global TV about how many of those 19 goals were scored at home versus on the road. Paul did some digging and it seems that Maxwell really likes playing at the Enmax Centre. 18 of those goals have been scored at home and just one on the road. Go figure! Interesting stat.

The Hurricanes next game is tonight when they host the Calgary Hitmen. The Canes', despite their on and off struggles have a 2-0 record against Calgary this season. Game time tonight is 7 o'clock. The pre-game show on CJOC at 6:30. The Hurricanes will once again wear their pink and blue jerseys for the game. After the contest, the jerseys will be auctioned off in a silent auction and all the proceeds going to the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation and the Canadian Cancer Society.

Thanks,
Pat

Game Day: Hurricanes vs. Spokane

The Lethbridge Hurricanes hit the ice tonight at the Enmax Centre as they host the Spokane Chiefs.

This game marks the return of two former Hurricanes to Lethbridge. Kyle Beach and Michael Tadjdeh both played last season with the Canes' before they were traded to Spokane early this season in separate deals. The Hurricanes are coming off a 2-1 victory in Swift Current on Wednesday. It's was the 20th game this season that the Hurricanes have been involved in that was decided by a single goal. Lethbridge is 8 and 12 in those 20 one goal contests. This will also be the last of the U.S.-based teams that the Hurricanes will face this season. A few Hurricanes will play against their former team tonight too. Dustin Donaghy, Mike Reddington, and Landon Oslanski were all Spokane Chiefs when this season started back in September. If anything, this game surely has a few interesting story lines to follow.

Lethbridge has won it's last two games and hope to make it 3 in a row. This is also a very special weekend for the Hurricanes. Tonight and tomorrow, the Canes' will wear special pink and blue jerseys in support of breast cancer in the first annual "Pink the Rink" event at the Enmax Centre. Fans have a chance to bid on the jerseys during a silent auction that'll take palce during both home games this weekend. The auction closes after tomorrow's game versus the Hitmen.

The 2010 Olympic Torch is also expected to make an early stop in Lethbridge tonight. It'll be at the Enmax Centre for a pre-game ceremonial face-off at centre ice. That should be the start to what is expected to be a good weekend. The Hurricanes are ranked 11th in the Eastern Conference with a record of 15-23-3-2 while the Chiefs are sitting tied for 3rd in the Western Conference with Portland with a record of 25-14-3-1.

Game time is 7 o'clock. The pre-game show on CJOC at 6:30.

Thanks,
Pat

Canes' Beat Broncos 2-1

SWIFT CURRENT - One assist each by the two newest Hurricanes helped Lethbridge to a 2-1 victory over the Broncos in Swift Current last night.

A good start for the Hurricanes in this game. The Canes' set the pace early and managed to get the first goal too. It didn't take too long for one of the newcomers to have an impact. Early in the first, Jacob Berglund fired a backhander toward the Swift Current goal and Marc Reners got his stick on the shot to deflect it in past Broncos goaltender Morgan Clark for his 5th goal of the season. The Hurricanes played well I thought in the opening 20 minutes and out shot Swift Current 12-9.

In the second, the Hurricanes would go up 2-0 on an early power play. Daniel Johnston's point shot was stopped by Clark, but Cam Braes would finish off the rebound to give the visitors a two goal cushion. On the other side of the ice, Linden Rowat did his part keeping the Broncos off the scoreboard until late in the second, when Swift Current would score on a two-on-one rush to cut the lead to 2-1 Hurricanes with less than a minute left in period. Rowat faced 16 shots in the second and played very well despite the late goal.

In the 3rd, the Broncos continued to pour it on, but were just unable to find the equalizer. Rowat, along with a little help from his best friends the goal post and crossbar managed to blank Swift Current in the final frame and preserve the 2-1 victory. Swift Current's best chance in the 3rd came on the power play when they hit the post and crossbar within a span of about 20 seconds or so. Rowat took care of the rest. He had a great game as the Hurricanes were out shot 39-26. He was the game's first star chosen by the Swift Current media.

Linden Rowat played in goal last night for the Canes' and Ville Kolppanen was the back-up. Brandon Anderson sat out because of a head injury he suffered in practice Monday. Rich Preston says it's just a minor thing and sitting him was just precautionary. Anderson should be back in the Hurricanes line-up this weekend.

A Chat With Captain Carter

I had a chance to speak a bit with Carter Bancks before last night's game in Swift Current. I asked him about the trade deadline and his thoughts about being rumoured in trade talk before Sunday. He admits there were some nervous moments, but he's extremely excited to be able to finish his junior career the way it started, as a Lethbridge Hurricane. Bancks says Lethbridge is like a second home to him and he's happy to be here. He says he had a number of conversations with Rich Preston about the possibilities of being traded. Bancks says what it came down to was that the Hurricanes valued what he can bring to this team the rest of the season more than what they could get in return.

Next Up

The Hurricanes are back home now for a couple of game. Tomorrow they play host to Spokane and Saturday night the Calgary Hitmen are in town. Both games are 7pm starts from the Enmax Centre. The Canes' will be wearing special blue and pink jerseys for both of those games in support of breast cancer. The Jerseys will be auctioned off after the Saturday game in silent auction. Tables will be set up on the concourse at the Enmax during both games for people interested in taking part in the silent auction.

Pat

Trottier & Walz to be Inducted into Canes'/Broncos Hall of Fame

Lethbridge, AB – The Lethbridge Hurricanes-Lethbridge Broncos Alumni Hall of Fame committee is pleased to announce the inductees for 2010 to be honored prior to the Hurricane’s home game with the Kootenay Ice on Saturday February 20th. This year’s inductees include former Lethbridge Hurricane Wes Walz, and former Lethbridge Bronco Bryan Trottier and in the builder category the Lethbridge Hockey Hounds. This year’s inductees will be following in the footsteps of Steve Tambellini, Jamie McLennan, Steve Fallwell, the Six Sutter Brothers, and John Chapman.

WESLEY “WES” WALZ (Born May 15, 1970 in Calgary, Alberta)

Walz joined the Lethbridge Hurricanes in 1988-1989 and had 75 assists and 104 points as a WHL rookie and won WHL Rookie of the Year. He was also a part of the franchise’s first appearance in the WHL Championship Finals. In 1989-90, Walz was one of five Lethbridge Hurricanes to score 50 or more goals in the season – a WHL record. He had 54 goals and 140 points and was named a WHL East 1st Team All-Star, he then followed this up with a league-best 24 assists and 37 points in 19 playoff games as the Hurricanes advanced to the WHL Championship Finals. That year, the Hurricanes set club records for points with 104 and goals scored with 465, both records which still stand to this day.

Walz also won a gold medal with Canada at the 1990 World Junior Hockey Championships.

In the 1989 NHL Entry Draft the forward was selected 57th overall by the Boston Bruins and during his NHL career, he played 607 NHL games in 11 seasons with Boston, Philadelphia, Calgary, Detroit and Minnesota. It was with the Wild that Walz became one of the premier defensive forwards in the NHL and in 2002-03 he was a finalist for the Frank J. Selke Trophy awarded to the NHL’s best defensive forward. He retired from the playing ranks of the Minnesota Wild in November of 2007 and has since joined the Tampa Bay Lightning as an Associate Coach where his wife Kerry-Anne and their five children now call home.

BRYAN TROTTIER (Born July 17, 1956 in Val Marie, Saskatchewan)

Trottier played for three seasons with the Lethbridge Broncos from 72-75 including his third year in 74-75 when the Broncos were purchased and moved from Swift Current to Lethbridge. Lethbridge hockey fans were to be treated to one of the most skilled forwards to ever put on a Bronco uniform. Although Trottier only skated on the Canada Games Sportsplex ice for one season, he put up the kind of numbers that got the attention of his teammates and opposition teams throughout the WCJHL. In his third year, Trottier led all the Broncos in scoring, averaging over two points per game with 46 goals and 98 assists for 144 points in just 67 games played.

His speed, scoring touch, and grit caught the eye of New York scouts and at the 1974 NHL Amateur Draft he was selected 22nd overall by the Islanders. His career in the NHL as a player is well documented – he has played on six Stanley Cup Championship teams, four with the Islanders and two with the Penguins. He then earned his first behind the bench as an assistant coach with the Colorado Avalanche. Trottier is the Islanders franchise leader in games played (1,123), points (1,353) and assists (853) and is second behind Mike Bossy in goals (500). Over the course of his career, Trottier won the Calder Trophy in 1976, won both the Art Ross and Hart Trophies in 1979 and the Conn Smythe Trophy as the MVP of the 1980 Stanley Cup Playoffs. He was also named to NHL All Star teams on 7 separate occasions. His was elected to the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1997 and is now the Executive Director of Player Development for the NY Islanders and resides in Pittsburgh with his wife Jennifer and their 4 children.

LETHBRIDGE HOCKEY HOUNDS

The Hockey Hounds were started in 1971 by Rex Johnson, John Kobal, Ralph Guzzi and Bob Snowden. There were 8 to 10 members - two of which are still active - Garry Robinson and Gordon Carpenter. Their duties were selling programs for the Sugar Kings, Longhorns (Junior A), Native Suns (Junior B) and the 1975 Winter Games. They also worked with the Lethbridge Broncos from 1974 to 1985. In 1987 they continued their volunteer efforts with the Lethbridge Hurricanes. In 1990, the Hockey Hounds were inducted into the Lethbridge Sports Hall of Fame in the Special Award Category. In 2007, they were inducted into the Alberta Sports Hall of Fame at Red Deer in the Builder's Category which Garry and Gordon attended. In the same year the Hockey Hounds were recipients of the Hockey Alberta Centennial Award in recognition of their significant amounts of time and resources to support the growth of hockey in Lethbridge.

The mandate of the Hockey Hounds is to support amateur hockey, Lethbridge Minor Hockey, Lethbridge Athletic Association and the University of Lethbridge Pronghorns. The organization's volunteer responsibilities include taking tickets at the doors for all hockey games, as well as concerts and other events at the Enmax. They also sell 50/50 tickets and programs for the Hurricanes and have sold over $1.2 million in 50/50 tickets in support of the Lethbridge Hurricane Education Fund.

Current President Jim Issak along with the two original members Garry Robinson and Gordon Carpenter will represent the Lethbridge Hockey Hounds at the Induction Ceremony.

Hurricanes @ Swift Current

The Hurricanes travel to Swift Current tonight to take on the Broncos.

It's the first game for the Canes' since the trade deadline passed on Sunday. (D) Daniel Johnston and (F) Jacob Berglund will make their Hurricanes debuts tonight. The pair was acquired by Lethbridge in a trade with Portland that sent (D) Luca Sbisa to the 'Hawks. We could see the return of (D) Mike Reddington in this game. He's missed the past week and a half with a groin injury. No doubt with Sbisa now gone, Reddington and (D) Brennan Yadlowski are the two go-to veterans that will be looked to when it comes to leading this up and coming defensive corps.

It certainly is a new era in Lethbridge and if Rich Preston hadn't put his stamp on this team two months ago, he sure has in the past month with two big trades, one with Regina and now with Portland. Will the Hurricanes be a better team for it? I honestly think so. For the Hurricanes, the future is now and I think Rich Preston, Brad Robson, and Richie Sutter see that. I don't really think for the next 30 games, that points and positioning in the standings is too important. What is though, is getting all these new players acquired over the course of the last few months to gel. It's time for all this youth to get opportunities to play in all different situations. These 30 games left in the regular season will certainly be a tune up for this group going into the 2010/2011 campaign. I know this sounds like I'm saying the Hurricanes are going to mail in the rest of the season here, but that's exactly the opposite. This is a big chance for these players to really come together now. This team will certainly be better for it next season and the year after too. The overwhelming majority of this current Lethbridge team will be back next season and that bodes well for Mr. Preston's building process.

I would expect this Lethbridge team to play hard every game from here on out regardless of whether they make or don't make the post-season. This is what the coaches watch for. Who goes out there and plays hard every shift, win or lose. This is where a guy like Carter Bancks plays a big factor. Younger players can take a lot from watching the way Bancks plays and preps for games. Look for more regular ice time for guys like Tot, Tarnasky, and Moser. These three were the catalysts in Saskatoon last weekend. Again, the more ice time they get, the better they will grow as players.

This will be the 3rd meeting of the season between the Canes' and Broncos. Game time from Swift Current is 6:30 (mt). The pre-game show on CJOC at 6.

Thanks,
Pat

Hurricanes Staff Issue Challenge

I just received this note from Dawna Welterlich, Corporate Account Executive with the Hurricanes Hockey Club:

As you may have heard, this weekend the Lethbridge Hurricanes are sponsoring the Pink In the Rink fundraising and awareness campaign. The players will be in specially designed jerseys that will be sold in a silent auction format over the course of the two games. As well, for every $200 raised on the Reach For The Cure website, a Hurricane player will have their head shaved at centre ice after the game on Saturday night. Carter Bancks has agreed to be the first to face the razor if donations top $1500. I just heard from Linden Rowat that he is not only planning to shave his head, but that his mustache is going too!

And now this just in: if the donations hit $5000, Business Operations Manager Geoff Stewart will also have his head shaved!

The Hurricanes’ office staff, coaches, trainers and the management of the Ticket Centre have donated $260.00 towards this cause. We issue a challenge to all other businesses of Southern Alberta to meet or beat our donation in an effort to drive up the total for this very worthwhile event! Simply go to www.lethbridgehurricanes.com and click on the “DONATE” box.

Thanks,
Pat

Post-Trade Deadline...Hurricanes This Week

Well, we are finally back home for a little bit.

The Canes' arrived back in Lethbridge early Saturday morning after an all night trip from Saskatoon. Yesterday was a busy day for Rich Preston working the phones right up to literally the last minute to see what was out there. In the end, he dealt Luca Sbisa to Portland for a draft pick and a 1st round import draft selection and in return getting a defenceman, a Euro forward, and 1st round import draft pick. I talked to Preston last night after the deadline. He said it was hectic right up to the last minute, but feels the Hurricanes got back very good value for Luca Sbisa. Preston says given the fact he wouldn't be back until late February from the Olympics, dealing him was the best scenario for Lethbridge. I would certainly have to agree with him on that. Really, could Luca help this Hurricanes team anymore than he already has? I don't think so. Sbisa will go down as probably one the best to play in a Hurricanes uniform and will be missed, but I truly feel, and think the coaching staff and management do as well, that for the long term this deal makes the Hurricanes a better team. In return, they get a couple of players that will be here for a few seasons to come. Sbisa will be with Portland only for a short period. I like this deal for the Canes' and it seems like it works for both teams.

As for Brent Henke, he gets a shot to play for a good organization in Vancouver. The Giants stocked up yesterday too with a big trade involving Edmonton. From what I understand, Henke was the kind of player Vancouver was looking for and the Hurricanes received a 5th rounder in 2011 in return. Preston indicated to me that he was close to having another deal done, but couldn't get it finished in time and the newer look Hurricanes will hit the ice this Wednesday in Swift Current.

Change of Plans for McDermott

It looks like the Hurricanes are losing another defenceman, not because of injury. Rich Preston told me last evening that Drew McDermott, who they acquired a few days ago from Everett has decided to go back to Yorkton of the SJHL because of family reasons. McDermott will remain on the Hurricanes list. It's too bad I suppose. He looked pretty good in the two games he played for the Canes' in P.A. and Saskatoon on the weekend. Certainly not news Preston was expecting to hear, after justing trading for his rights last Thursday.

Obviously Carter Bancks was not dealt away and will finish his junior career as a Hurricane. The Captain of this team has played with Lethbridge from the start and that's the way it'll finish for him too. Whether the Canes' were trying to move him or not, Preston didn't say. I'm sure he's happy Bancks will be here for the rest of the season. Something tells me Bancks himself had a lot of say as to whether he stayed in Lethbridge or got traded.

Hurricanes This Week

Our Hurricanes talk show resumes tonight on CJOC at 6pm (MT). You can also catch slow over the internet by listening to our live stream at http://www.cjocfm.com/. Canes' Trade Sbisa & Henke in Separate Deals

LETHBRIDGE - Lethbridge Hurricanes General Manager/Head Coach, Rich Preston, announced this afternoon the Canes have traded 2008 NHL 1st round draft pick Luca Sbisa, along with the Canes 5th round pick in the 2011 WHL Bantam Draft to the Portland WinterHawks in exchange for 92-born defenseman Daniel Johnston and 91-born Swedish forward Jacob Berglund. Portland and Lethbridge also agreed to swap first round selections in the 2010 CHL Import Draft.

Also, the Canes completed a deadline deal which sees forward Brent Henke to the Vancouver Giants in exchange for a 5th round pick in 2011. Berglund, was selected with Portland’s second round pick in the 2009 Import Draft, 64th overall. This season, the Swedish prospect has 12 points (5G, 7A) in 41 games. In 08-09, the 6’1, 199 pound center played for Malmo in Sweden and in 55 total games with the Under-18, Under-20 and Swedish 1 leagues, registered 21 goals and 20 assists for 41 total points and in 07-08 the notched 26 goals and 14 assists for 40 points in 44 total games. Johnston, is playing in what is basically his rookie season after missing much of last year with a neck injury. Thus far in 09-10, the native of Calgary, AB has notched 10 assists and 15 PIMs and a solid plus-13 +/- rating.

Sbisa, a Hurricanes import draft pick in 2007 most recently represented his country as team captain of Switzerland at the U-20 World Junior Hockey Championships in Saskatchewan from Dec.26 – Jan.5. The Swiss advanced to the WJHC semi finals with a 3-2 OT win over Russia before a 6-1 semi final loss to Canada. Sbisa has also been selected for the Swiss Olympic team for Vancouver 2010 in February. Henke, was acquired by the Canes in early in the 08-09 season as the result of a trade with the Edmonton Oil Kings. Originally he was selected in the 5th round of the 2005 WHL Bantam Draft (100th overall) by the Kootenay Ice. Last season he was the winner of the Hurricanes Most Sportsmanlike Player Award

Sbisa Heading to Portland

From Gregg Drinnan:

Lots of small deals today but Portland made what I think is a big one, getting D Luca Sbisa from Lethbridge. Portland gets Sbisa, 19, a 2010 first-round import pick, and a 2011 fifth-round bantam pick for D Daniel Johnston, 17, F Jacob Berglund, 18, and a 2010 first-round import pick.

I'll have more on this in a bit.

Thanks,
Pat

All Quiet Still for the Hurricanes

As of 20 minutes to the trade deadline, still nothing from the Lethbride Hurricanes.

Rich Preston said last night that he was expecting to be active at the deadline today. I'll keep you posted here when something happens. I do expect once the deadline ends, a lot more activity from around the league will be announced. There was a big trade announced earlier between Kamloops and Calgary. Check Gregg Drinnan's blog for that. Swift Current also made a deal with Tri-City. So far though, the it's been quiet in Canes' Country. I suspect that's likely to change soon.

Thanks,
Pat

Hurricanes Upset Blades in Saskatoon

ON THE BUS BACK TO LETHBRIDGE - The Hurricanes, backed by some excellent goaltending and some timely scoring for the 4th line, upset the first place Blades 3-1 last night at the Credit Union Centre.

Saskatoon came out gunning in their first game at home in 2010, but some very impressive goaltending by Brandon Anderson kept the 3rd meeting of the season between the two clubs close. It was scoreless after 20 minutes. Anderson faced a number of tough shots in the first as the Blades out shot the Canes' 13-4. His best save came on Blades defenceman Jiri Niemi when he fired out his pad to stop Niemi on great deek. The Hurricanes played the game with 5 defenceman as Reid Jackson was the latest blueliner to get injured.

In the second, the Blades continued keeping the shots coming on Brandon Anderson, but he again stood tall in goal stopping all 14 shots he faced in that period. Despite being outplayed for the most part, the Canes' scored first in this one. Ryon Moser notched his 3rd of the season after a miscue from Saskatoon goaltender Adam Morrison. He went to cover the puck, when it went off his stick, then off the skate and stick of Moser and in. Video replay requested a review of the goal and after about 8 minutes of looking at it, the goal stood. A few minutes after that, the same young line of Tarnasky, Tot, and Moser would strike again. Moser would get his second of the night after banking a backhander off a Blades defenceman and off Morrison and in. At that time, the Hurricanes were being out shot 21-8. That would end Morrison's night in goal. He was pulled in favour of Steven Stanford. The Canes' had a two man advantage for more than 2 minutes at the end of the second, but were unable to get the power play set up. Lethbridge lead 2-0 after 40 minutes, but were being out shot 27-12.

In the third, the Blades quickly got back into the game with a goal early to cut the lead in half. Brandon Anderson though continued to play lights out for the rest of the game as the Blades tried everything to tie it up. The Hurricanes would again get a two man advantage in the 3rd and this time they would score as Cam Braes knocked home a big goal to put the Canes' up 3-1 and that's the way it would end. A big victory for the Canes'. A pretty gritty victory too lead offensively by the 4th line and Brandon Anderson in goal. The final shots in this game were 37-19 Saskatoon. Anderson was the first star, Moser the second, and the Blades Stefan Elliot the 3rd.

Give the Hurricanes some credit here. They managed to beat the top team in the WHL with an injury riddled line-up. The Canes' dressed 5 defenceman, but only played 4. Brandyn Huilt only saw spot duty for the most part. For the second time in less than a week, the Hurricanes managed wins against two of the best teams in the league, Saskatoon and Calgary. Goaltending was the key in both victories.

Trade Talk

It appears Head Coach/GM Rich Preston will indeed be jumping into that trade pool before this afternoon's deadline. I put the question one last time to him in our CJOC pre-game show last night and with a chuckle he said, "I think we will be active Pat. We have a lot of games over the next couple of months and we need some depth, especially on the back end."

I guess you can take it for what it's worth. Again, it looks like he will be adding to the line-up. He never said anything about dealing away any current roster players, but I suppose at the trade deadline anything can happen. Put it this way, it wouldn't surprise me in the least if Preston deals away as well as acquiring players over the next few hours. We'll have to wait and see just how things will shake down. It seems like a lot of teams are waiting to see which club is going to make the first move before trading ends this afternoon.

Injuries Mounting

The Hurricanes were hit with another injury after the Prince Albert game Friday. The Canes' lost another defenceman as Reid Jackson missed last night's game in Saskatoon. He got his bell rung pretty good in P.A. and the Hurricanes decided it was best he sit Saturday's game out. Lethbridge played the game with only 5 defencemen with Sbisa, Ryckman, Reddington, and now Jackson all out with injuries.

Next Up

The Hurricanes are off now until Wednesday when they play the Broncos in Swift Current. Game time will be 6:30 (MT).

Thanks,
Pat
