Suspensions From Game One

The Western Hockey League announced Saturday afternoon that Hurricanes forward Kyle Beach has been suspendedf for tonight's game as will Saskatoon defenceman Jiri Niemi.

Beach gets one game for a 3rd period crosscheck on Niemi. Niemi gets a game for an inappropriate gesture to the Hurricanes bench after that incident.

The two players will sit out game two and be back for game 3 in Lethbridge on Tuesday night. With Beach not in the line-up tonight, there's a chance the Canes' will activate Mark Reners who made the trip with the team. If not Reners, rookie Garrett Taylor could get the call.

Talk to you tonight on the broadcast at 6:30!
Bye For now.

Blades Draw First Blood

The Lethbridge Hurricanes find themselves trailing their best of 7 first round playoff series with Saskatoon 1-0 after a 5-1 loss last night at Credit Union Centre.

The Canes' struck first in game one, when Cam Braes scored into a wide open goal after Saskatoon's goaltender Braden Holtby got caught behind his net. The Blades would then score twice to take a 2-1 lead after one. It appeared the Hurricanes tied the game up before the end of that opening period, but the officials ruled the puck was tipped in with a high stick. The goal was reviewed by the video goal judge and although it looked like the puck contacted the stick just below the crossbar, the video goal judge found no conclusive evidence to overrule the official's original call. I felt, after seeing the reply, the goal should've counted.

The game stayed 2-1 Blades until late in the 2nd, when Saskatoon took a 3-1 lead on the power play. That I thought is where the momentum shifted into the Blades favour. Saskatoon added 2 more in the 3rd to win it 5-1. The Blades scored twice on the power play while the Canes failed to score with the man advantage. The Hurricanes will need a much stronger performance tonight as they now try and even this series at one heading back to Lethbridge for games 3 and 4 next week.Third string goaltender Brandon Anderson got the call in game one last night. I must admit I didn’t see that one coming. He did play fairly well I thought. He came up with a few very good stops. According to coach Michael Dyck in the CJOC pre-game show, Anderson was the strongest goalie in practice over the past week and that’s why they decided to give him the start. It’ll be interesting to see who gets the call tonight in game two. Is Metsola ready to go? Will Anderson go again? Will Michael Tadjdeh get a shot? I guess we’ll have to wait till game time to find out the answer!

The focus for Lethbridge now has to be tying this series up. They will need contributions from everyone and they’ll need to play a solid game from start to finish. Last night, I thought the Hurricanes played well for the first 7 or so minutes then the Blades found their legs. It was a fairly entertaining too for the most part.

Last night’s game was a physical affair as well. A number of solid checks from both teams last night. It was also a feisty affair. I would expect to see much of the same tonight.

Expect the Blades to be a very hungry bunch tonight. I’m sure they’d love nothing more than to go up 2-0 in this series. The Canes’, with a win here tonight, can effectively turn this into a best of 5.

The puck drops at 7. The pre-game show on CJOC at 6:30.

Canes @ Blades Game 1 Tonight

Hi from Saskatoon!

Tonight the Lethbridge Hurricanes will take on the Saskatoon Blades in game one of the WHL’s Eastern Conference quarter final. This best of 7 series gets going at 7pm, with the pre-game show on CJOC at 6:30.

The Hurricanes are defending their Eastern Conference Championship of a year ago. The team left Lethbridge yesterday and arrived in Saskatoon just after 6 pm last night. The Canes’ practiced at the Enmax Centre before loading the bus. There’ll be a short practice today before the puck drops tonight.

The Blades won the season series 3 games to one, but Lethbridge won the last meeting 2 weeks ago 4-3, in what was a very well played game by the Canes here in Saskatoon. If Lethbridge plays like they did in that game, this should be a very entertaining first round series.

At this time it still isn’t known if goaltender Juha Metsola will start tonight’s game. I spoke with him before we left yesterday and he told me he’s feeling much better. I think that’s great news for Lethbridge as Metsola, who is a big piece of the puzzle for the Canes’ going into the playoffs. Juha was clearly the difference in the Hurricanes great playoff run last year and there is hope and excitement that he can do it again this year. Metsola suffered an injury last weekend in Cranbrook.

This Hurricanes team is pumped for the post-season. Yes, things didn’t go as hoped in the regular season, but with that now in the past the focus here and now is on Saskatoon and taking game one.

I’ve always felt the odd games in series are most important. For the Hurricanes they would love nothing more than to get this series started off on the right foot in game one.

There’s no question though this will be a battle. The Blades are a great team. They finished the season with 103 points and one of the best records in the WHL. Saskatoon has rock solid goaltending in Braden Holtby who’s been one of the best in the league this year. One key for the Hurricanes will be getting as much traffic in front of Holtby as possible. Special teams will be crucial too. The Canes’ power play will play an important role and talking with head coach Michael Dyck a few days ago, getting more consistency from the penalty kill will be equally as key.

I think both teams have dynamic offenses. The Blades don’t really have any big names, but they get contributions from everywhere, that's one of the reasons they’ve been so successful. I have a true respect for what Saskatoon has accomplished this season and I know the Hurricanes feel the same going into this series. I would assume the Blades are aware of what the Canes’ can do and what talent and fire power they have. I think the last game these two teams played a few weeks ago was a good indication of what this series is going to be all about.

As for defence, both teams are fairly strong on the back end. Saskatoon’s defensive corps has amazing plus-minus numbers and holds the edge I think there. Colin Joe, Stefan Elliot, and Ryan Funk will lead the Blades in that department. Lethbridge will heavily rely on Ben Wright, Luca Sbisa, and Mitch Versteeg to lead the way on the back end.

This series could very well be won and lost on goaltending. With the potential for a lot of offence, I would think both coaches likely do not want to get into a run and gun style of hockey in this series.

The Hurricanes were lead offensively against Saskatoon in the regular season by 3 players, Kyle Beach (2G 1A), Dwight King (2G 1A), and Cam Braes (1G 2A). For the Blades, Derek Hulak has managed 4 points, all goals, against Lethbridge during the regular season.

Unlike going into the playoffs last year, this Hurricanes team is a lot more experienced with the feeling of playoff hockey this time around. Perhaps for those that went the distance with Lethbridge a year ago, they will be as eager as ever to get back there again. I know everyone involved with the Hurricanes right now is very excited for this “new” season to get started.
This will be no walk in the park for either team. A first round battle royale!

Game two of this series goes Saturday night at 7 in Saskatoon.

Canes' Getting Set For Game One

The Lethbridge Hurricanes begin defending their Eastern Conference Championship of last season when the take on the Blades in game one of their first round playoff series in Saskatoon at Credit Union Centre tomorrow night.

As up and down as this season has been for the Canes', I can tell you the team is very much looking at starting fresh in the post-season. No question though the status of goaltender Juha Metsola will be key. I had a chance to sit down with head coach Michael Dyck to talk about things heading into the series. Here's that interview in it's entirety: http://www.box.net/shared/o2fqbgk49l

I spent some time looking through a few of the sports sites yesterday and found an interesting article on sportsnet.ca. They list the Lethbridge Hurricanes as the the WHL's darkhorse team. Here's the link to read up on that:

Game two in this Lethbridge-Saskatoon series is Saturday night at 7pm. The series switches to Lethbridge Tuesday and Wednesday next week for games 3 and 4. You can catch all the action on CJOC, 94.1 The Lounge, the radio home of the Lethbridge Hurricanes!

I'll set up game one Friday.
That's it for now.

Regular Season Over...Awards Handed Out...Playoff Time!

Well, a regular season that was up and down for the Lethbridge Hurricanes wrapped up yesterday with a 6-2 home-ice loss to the Calgary Hitmen.

Lethbridge finishes the regular season with a record of 35-32-3-2 for 75 points and 7th place in the Eastern Conference. They will take on the 2nd place Saskatoon Blades in a best of 7 series beginning this Friday and Saturday at Credit Union Centre. The series switches back to Lethbridge for games 3 and 4 Tuesday and Wednesday March 24th and 25th.

Yesterday's final game of the 08-09 regular season saw the Canes' take on the best in the WHL, the Calgary Hitmen. The game was tied at two after one period of play. The Hitmen added two more in the second and two more in the 3rd to win in 6-2. Calgary scored twice on the power play and once short-handed. Lethbridge scored both it's goals with the man advantage, both by Colton Sceviour. The Hitmen finish the regular season with an amazing 122 points. One of the best finishes by any team in the history of the league.

Now that the playoffs are set the focus clearly moves to this upcoming series with Saskatoon. I think this should be a good first round match-up and a tough one to call. This series could come down to goaltending. A battle between Saskatoon's Braden Holtby and the Hurricanes Juha Metsola. Metsola is still recovering from the injury he suffered in Cranbrook on Saturday. Hopefully he'll be ready to go for game one, but we'll have to see how he feels as this week moves on. There's no question Juha is key to the Hurricanes success. He wouldn't have been a co-winner of the MVP award if he wasn't.

Tonight on CJOC, our last "Hurricanes This Week" talk show of the season. It'll be our playoff preview show and final media round table. Fred Jack and I will be joined by Paul Kingsmith from Global TV, Dylan Purcell from the Lethbridge Herald, and Darryl Rumold from CTV. The show starts at 7pm.

Hurricanes Lose 4-1 at Kootenay

A tough loss for the Hurricanes last night on the road in Cranbrook.

The Canes’ dropped a 4-1 decision to the Kootenay Ice in a game that saw Canes’ starting goaltender Juha Metsola go down with what looked to be scary injury. Metsola was inadvertently hit late in the first period when a Kootenay player was driving to the net and couldn’t get out of the way. Metsola hit the ice hard and was taken off the ice on a stretcher and to hospital for observation. The injury looked a lot worse than it was. The medical staff in Cranbrook did a great job and took every precaution necessary in case the injury was more serious. I’ve been told Metsola will be O.K. and likely out about 5 days or so and hopefully ready for round one of the playoffs.

The game was scoreless through the first two periods. Zach Boychuk scored 22 seconds into the 3rd to give the Canes a 1-0 lead and break the scoreless tie. The Ice came back and scored 4 straight, including 2 short-handed, one on the power play, and the other even strength to win the game 4-1. The Hurricanes were also outshot 36-18. The loss automatically sets up a Lethbridge-Saskatoon first round series starting March 20th and 21st next Friday and Saturday in Saskatoon. Games 3 and 4 will be back in Lethbridge Tuesday and Wednesday March 24th and 25th. So get your playoff tickets! The Hurricanes can go no higher than 7th place in the Eastern Conference even if they win tonight versus Calgary. Kootenay will take on Brandon in the first round and Swift Current will meet Medicine Hat. All those series begin next week. The Calgary Hitmen still don’t know if they play Prince Albert or Saskatoon.

It was an interesting ride home too. A problem with the bus's coolant system forced us to the side of the highway for about 3 hours overnight. We didn't arrive back in Lethbridge until about 6:15 this morning. A repair crew from Cranbrook had to come out and fix the problem. The usual 3 and half trip took closer to 7 hours.

Before tonight’s game against the Hitmen, the Hurricanes will give out their regular season awards. A number of different trophies will be handed out to the players. I’ll have a full recap of those awards on here tomorrow.

This game tonight really doesn’t mean anything for Lethbridge in the standings, just a bit of a tune game for the playoffs. Once the game is over though, the focus will switch to the playoffs and the Saskatoon Blades.

Game time tonight is 6 o’clock. The pre-game show on CJOC at 5:30.
